We were actually just talking about this the other day. My DH is Vietnamese and his name is hard to pronounce for english speakers and can be turned into not nice curse words by mean kids which he delt with growing up.

Our kids will be given a Viet name but it will not be their legal name, mostly for my DH's parents and relatives.

I have a common Japanese first name that people mispronounce and misspell all the time. I have a love/hate relationship with it but in the end, wouldn't trade it for any other. I would like to have our kids have Japanese middle names or names after members in our family. Names can give a glimpse to your cultural background and I find that important to me.

My hubby and I both have traditional indian names. I always loved it but my hubby's name is hard to pronounce so he struggled a bit growing up. We named our little girl with an indian name (both first and middle) but we picked a name that is easy to pronounce and won't make her feel insecure (at least I hope so). I am proud to have a rich cultural background and wouldn't want to take that away from my kids.

We have also chosen a Japanese name for LO's first name and a Chinese middle name. Growing up, I hated my Chinese middle name but I grew to like it!

My in-laws gave LO a Chinese name and my parents are still thinking of a Korean name for her. But neither are/will be legal.

We chose a Japanese first name for our soon to be born baby girl but it's easy to pronounce and is actually used in the states too but not too commonly.

I have a cultural name and growing up I hated it. I finally grew into it in college. Now I love it, there's usually no one with my name. To make things confusing, my parents call me a nickname which doesn't at all sound like it could come from my name. It always creates confusion when my work/school and parental lives collide!

My maiden legal name is completely Vietnamese-- I have an American "nickname" that I go by, which is what all of my friends call me. Even after I got married, I just hyphenated, so I have a really Viet/German name.

I think we'll give our kids Vietnamese middle names, which is hard, because Vietnamese names are usually two names. I don't know if we'll go with a double middle name, or just choose one Vietnamese name instead.

We looked at different Hebrew names but decided to go the family name route. She'll be named by the Rabbi with a Hebrew name though.

My husband and his older brother both have names that are somewhat hard to pronounce (his older brother moreso) for an English speaker. So we wanted a name that worked in both french and english or at least wouldn't be butchered by either. There is a bit of a pronunciation difference for her name but I think both ways sound pretty so hopefully she's fine with her name being said differently by different people.

I had a chinese middle name growing up but dropped it when I changed my name after I got married. I didn't feel that it was that significant because it was barely used. My parents and grandparents called me either by my first name or another chinese name. The father in law recently verbalized that he was already thinking of a chinese middle name for our LO. I told my husband that we will consider but may not necessarily be in his legal name.

I have a traditional Korean first name, my parents weren't keen on giving us English names when we came over here when I was in first grade. I lucked out that it's a pretty common, easy to say Korean name.

I'd like to give our LOs "Korean" names as well... I know some couples have given their LOs Korean names as middle names. I know some that have just made Korean names for themselves/parents and not necessarily registered legally.

We plan on doing the latter... what about you? Any traditional/cultural names for your LOs?
