For an outdoor party, I would do cupcakes. Much less of a hassle than slicing cake onto a plate. From what I've seen at birthday parties, kids aren't usually that into cake, they eat a few bites and run off to do activities. I think cake is more for the adults :silly: .

@misolee: I thought about serving brownies because the giant, gooey chocolate chip ones from Starbucks are so darn good and LO would actually eat all of it.

I’m not a fan of cupcakes that are store bought bc the frosting is ridiculous. Like why do they have to put so much on there? When I taught preschool years ago (3-4 year olds), all the moms will bring cupcakes (it had to be store bought) and not one single kid finished it every time. They’ll take couple of bites, lick the frosting, and throw it out. One mom out of a class of sixteen brought a cookie cake. That was eaten up :silly:

I tend to like one piece of cake cut for the candles. Or a cupcake. Because germs.

I prefer cake for parties because you can adjust the slice sizes. Also the frosting to cake ratio is better on cakes than cupcakes.

When I do cupcakes I usually do a 6" small cake along with it to stick birthday candles into for the singing of Happy Birthday. I got a 3-tier cake stand from Target that handles this set-up really nicely.

Cupcakes are easy to transport and if you get a cupcake stand, they look super festive. I did cupcakes like that for my son's 2nd birthday last year and it was adorable.

I like the ease of cupcakes for serving - no need for plates or forks. Also I think they're easier to transport in the car. Layer cakes always freak me out that it might shift and get completely ruined.

My children are very opinionated about cupcakes vs cake so I leave it up to them. If I had a choice though I would absolutely do cupcakes—no slicing, much easier to bake and decorate.

@smuckers: he is turning three. There will be quite a few adults with no kids like our family and our family-friends have older elementary age children. If his classmates come we could have about half a dozen toddlers.

I agree with the others, I would do cupcakes for ease of serving. If you really want the cake vibe, I would either do a tiny mini cake (like a smash cake, or even smaller) just for LO, or, more likely I would have a very small cake at home later. Usually our party ends up not being in the actual bday, so I’d have a small cake at home on the actual bday and the cupcakes at the party.

We always do both. Chocolate layer cake because that’s what my son likes, and mini vanilla cupcakes because his cousins prefer those. But we have only done home parties. For the park I might just do cupcakes.

Although I love the look of the cake and I prefer cakes... I think for ease I'd vote cupcakes. We just had DS's party at an out of home location and I did cupcakes for ease. It worked out perfectly.. especially if there will be lots of activity and lots of kids/parents there bc then they can just grab their own if/when then want it (after you sing of course :silly: )

ETA: if you were having it at home I'd vote both (bc that's what I would do)

How old is LO turning / how old will the guests be? My gut is to say cupcakes, if you'll have a lot of toddlers/young kids there. Seems both more convenient and like the servings would be smaller for your smaller guests. But, if the party skews more grown ups than kids (which is honestly how my LO's parties are), then I'd probably go with cake if that's what you would prefer to do. Either one will be lovely, though

Both? When I've done cupcakes in the past I also made a mini-cake just for LO.

Otherwise I would vote for cupcakes just for convenience since you're at a playground, easy to grab, no plates needed, multiple flavors...

LO’s bday party is being held at a toddler friendly playground that has a splash ground. For the sweets- Outshine no sugar added popsicles, chewy sprinkle cookies and either chocolate cake or chocolate cupcakes.

These are my inspiration pictures for either the cupcakes or layer cake. Typically, LO will just eat the frosting if given a cupcake without encouragement to eat the rest. Cupcakes may be easier to serve and since LOs favorite cake flavor is chocolate I could get a few vanilla cupcakes too for the non-chocolate lovers. On the other hand a layer cake may not be that inconvenient to slice up and serve and it gives off the “birthday vibe” even more so than cupcakes. With a single cake flavor the non-chocolate lovers can always eat a cookie, have a popsicle or skip dessert altogether.

What would you do? Cupcakes 🧁 or Cake 🎂
