All great advice. How about hummus or beans? And we have good luck sneaking fruits and veggies into homemade muffins, pancakes, waffles, and quesadillas. The biggest hits are pancakes or waffles with lots of grains like oats and hemp seeds and shredded veggies like sweet potato, zucchini, yellow squash, etc plus some type of pureed fruit or veggie. My kids gobble them up.

Unsweetened dried fruit like mango and pineapple rings are really good and they clean you out. Trader Joe's has them - the pineapple is like candy.

@MrsSRS: I didn't realize bananas were such a problem. I had read that only unripe ones were bad, so he has at least one banana a day (at breakfast), sometimes more if daycare has it as a snack. We've stopped that as of yesterday, plus I went to the store and bought every snack I could find that said it was high fibre, and made bran muffins....hopefully putting some solid effort into it will yield results.

We ultimately did a lot of prune juice, but what helped us most was limiting or eliminating dairy, rice, bananas, and wheat to prevent the problem from starting in the first place. And drinking lots of water. Milk and cheese are still really constipating for my kids and we limit their access.

Our pediatrician gave us a recipe for a fruit spread when we were having constipation issues. We used to spread it on toast or use it in a sandwich with peanut butter. It is similar to this recipe:

1 cup prunes, pitted
1 cup dates, pitted
1 cup raisins, seedless
1/2 cup orange juice
2/3 cup prune juice

Steam dried fruit over boiling water to soften
Blend thoroughly in food processor until of spreading consistency
Refrigerate
Can be eaten alone or served on toast, crackers, hot cereal or other food
items

60 servings of 15 ml (1 tablespoon), each with 0.25 grams of fibre

My boys eat something oat based for breakfast every morning. Usually it is granola (homemade- just rolled oats, molasses, and oil). Sometimes it's muffins or baked oatmeal. I can tell the difference when I give my 10 month old waffles instead. It's easy, fast, and they both love it.

Also, if you are willing to let him eat popcorn, my boys LOVE it straight (only a little salt sometimes, nothing else) and will eat an entire bowl full.

@Ms.Badger: That's what we use. And there's a homeopathic "medication" called Mommy's Bliss Constipation Ease that worked like a charm for A. I've seen it at Wegman's and Target, and I'm sure you could order it on Amazon or something.

If he likes cereal like oatmeal or something, you can mix the puréed prunes with that or a little yogurt. Also ripe pear chunks and maybe muffins with some bran flakes or buds, flax seed baked in. Letting my son drink from an open cup with regards to the prune juice always seemed to be novel enough to get more into him (you can hold it for him to sip)

We did the restoralax over Christmas as we had a really bad situation and it did work but we had to stop as his poops became too loose! It's a fine balance so just be cautious. It took a couple days to get him back to normal.

Will he drink apple juice? I hear that is good for pooping. Mine doesn't really care for juice, so we don't buy it or give it to him regularly enough to attribute his pooping to that. The carbs he eats at home though all have decent fiber amounts. Will your LO eat waffles? We feed him this kind http://www.vansfoods.com/our-products/8wg-multigrain-waffles and it has 7g of fiber. When LO will eat it, I give him beef smoked sausage and don't worry about the natural oil since I hear some fat is helpful in digestion.

I used the same prune concentrate @jhd: mentioned at that age - the brand is called Baby Move. It's available on Amazon and Jet, and I've also purchased at CVS and Kroger locally.

There are a few pouches that do the trick for my son: Plum Organics peach/pear/prune/pumpkin, Sprout pear/spinach/prune, and Happy Tot banana/peach/coconut/prune (yes, even with the bananas). When he was really constipated we'd let him have two pouches a day.

Will he do smoothies? You can throw in prune juice or whole prunes in there and you can make oatmeal raisin cookies but replace the raisins with chopped prunes. You can also add a teeny bit of psyllium husk (1 teaspoon) in the smoothies (it's what Metamucil is made of) which will thicken the smoothies instead of banana (which is binding). We make smoothies with frozen fruit, yogurt, spinach, flax, a splash of juice and that base he finds tasty.

I gave my LO a prune concentrate with probiotics in it around that age when we struggled with constipation. Our ped was fine with it. I found it at CVS, but that may not be helpful because I think you are in Canada.

We also did juice, peaches, pears, Fig Newtons, etc. and tried to limit banana and applesauce.

This is all TMI and poop-related, sorry in advance.

My 1 year old has been having pooping problems for months - he turns red, strains, and scream/cries. It's heartbreaking. He's pretty regular, sometimes it's pretty firm, sometimes it seems fine, but it seems to really hurt him. I got a prescription for Restoralax and I'm going to try that but I'd like it to be a short term solution. What can I do in the long term to help him? He doesn't really eat fruit or vegetables, which is a whole separate problem. For a while I was feeding him a puréed pear every day (he'll eat pouches) and it didn't really help. I've tried prune juice but I can't get him to drink enough to really help. Thoughts? Recipes? Fibre rich foods that a 1 year old will eat?
