@Torchwood: except higher-income-but-not-actually-rich people are the primary base for republicans. So it is surprising to me! except that I knew HB ran liberal so I should've thought of that. That might be more because we tend to be younger and women though too.

I vote according to my moral code, but that's because I have the luxury of being able to. If I vote for something that would increase my taxes, or otherwise negatively impact me, I can afford it. It's a form of privilege that we don't usually think about. HB is skewed pretty heavily towards a higher income crowd, so I'm not surprised at the results.

Oh and to answer for myself I also vote according to my moral code. We're upper middle class (well maybe just middle class at the moment lol) well educated professional types. In terms of dollars in our pocket I think Republicans would probably win our vote but we're more concerned with the health of our society (and think that is ultimately what is best for us as well).

sorry I lost track of this thread but thank you all for answering! I'm sort of surprised that people overwhelmingly vote for their moral code/the good of society vs. what is good for their own family. Although maybe I shouldn't be because HB is overwhelmingly liberal.

I don't agree 100% with either party but will vote for moral beliefs first and foremost. The hot thing for me right now are the politicians that want to take away women's rights and make medical decisions for them. Not ok with me and I would vote against that person even if I agreed with them on everything else.

@hummusgirl: Totes. Also, now I am really craving hummus

@mae: Such a good question to raise!

The only issues that get sticky for me are policies that follow my moral compass, but that are next to impossible to really implement. Implementation is so easy for elected leaders to forget, unfortunately, so when I hear them follow up on making the policies they stand behind actually work, then I get excited about them as leaders.

What a great question!

I vote according to my moral code. I really believe that we should look after each other, particularly the weaker members of our society. Top quality free healthcare, welfare provision, support services, affordable rented housing for anyone who needs it, a safe place for people fleeing war or persecution.

I loathe our current government despite the fact that I am actually better off under them because of tax cuts.

I look at the big picture. As a US citizen who has lived abroad for years, I don't directly benefit from things like taxes or social policies. But when I tell people I'm American, I hope that I'm identified as someone who comes from a country that treats its citizens with dignity and has policies that are seen as acceptable elsewhere. People are often fascinated with Americans and ask all sorts of questions about policies, politics and culture. The US is the most powerful country in the world and it has an effect on so many other countries, not just Americans.

I'd say a hybrid of 2 and 3, since I think my moral code both influences and is influenced by what I think is best for my (immediate as well as extended) family. But it's not a moral code in the sense of something dictated to me by religion or whatever; it's just my own logic and sense of right and wrong. Basically, it ends up being what @hummusgirl said, since I think it's all intertwined. But I'm of the opinion that short-term "solutions" are the root of long-term problems, so I definitely wouldn't pick option 1.

Hard to pick between "long term for my family" and "moral code": for me both choices include things like my family (and others!) paying higher taxes in exchange for a better educated public, better roads for everyone to drive on, better access for everyone to health care, easier access for everyone to higher education, more funding for scientific and medical research which benefits everyone, more funding of programs that encourage food and economic security in younger generations (SNAP, head start, etc) - because all of those things benefit my family long term too.

@Mae: are "one issue" voters supposed to vote in column three? Like, I have lots and lots of family members who are really one issue voters. Like a brother who allllll of his political beliefs would be very similar to Bernie Sanders, except for the fact that my brother is anti-choice (pro life, he'd call it), and Bernie Sanders is pro-choice. So my brother would never vote for a Bernie Sanders type candidate and instead will probably vote for a religious Republican that is anti-choice but doesn't represent any of his other views.

The US has TONS of one issue voters, mostly centered around abortion or gun control, and it doesn't matter to them what else the candidate wants to do, so long as they have similar views in that one area.

I guess I vote based on the kind of society I want to live in - which I see as self-interested even though it may not mean services I'll actually use. I don't really think it's in anyone's best interest to have large segments of the population receiving substandard education, living in poverty, unable to make a living wage despite working full-time, etc. And a little closer to home, I'm very concerned about climate change for my children's future. Paying a few more bucks in taxes to address these issues seems like money well spent to me.

Mostly what feels right/wrong. I think everyone would love tax cuts, but if those tax cuts (which would be better for my family) would result in cutting funding to important (IMO) programs like welfare, Medicaid, social security, etc I'd be much less likely to vote for them.

I actually struggle with this a lot! I don't like either party, or like bits and pieces from each. I can't ever decide on a candidate because each seems polar from my views.
I try to vote more based on what I feel is right and wrong, and what I believe is the best candidate for the country as a whole.

So I'm watching the republican debate and it has me thinking. I don't need to know WHAT your beliefs are, but I wonder what other people evaluate in terms of deciding what they want for America (or your country if you're not American).

For example, I think some people are mostly concerned about the right now of their immediate family. What will I pay in taxes, What federal programs do I want to take advantage of right now, etc. They think the future is too uncertain so they just want the best deal they can personally get this minute. Others I think are more focused on moving the country in a way that they think is best for their family long term. They think about things that aren't necessarily important to them right now like social security and healthcare. Others I think want policies that meet their moral beliefs (whether that be taking care of the poor, or fighting against gay marriage/abortion/etc).

Obviously there is going to be a variety of factors, but vote for the one CLOSEST to how you feel, and elaborate if you wish.
