If it is against policy, fire him, but if it was a consensual affair and the player is of age, it isn't against the law just morally wrong.

Now if it comes out he used his power as a coach as a way to get the player to sleep with him (say threatening her playing time, ect..), that's different and future schools should consider this as abuse of power and should not want a couch like this.

It's unethical. It was right for him to resign. The link posted said he was married.

Depends. If it was an undergrad student, then no, I don't think he should coach again. Or rather, I think the NCAA should put a show-cause order against him (ie, the school that wants to hire him will have to show why it must be him, and not another coach). If it were a grad student, I think he should be fired, but maybe not a show-cause. It's gross, it's irresponsible, it takes advantage of an unequal power dynamic, and it should go against school policy.

(This is the first I've heard of it, btw, but I work on a college campus. If a professor were to sleep with an undergrad, that's a bigger deal than with a grad student, in my experience. Though I do know of a prof who was denied tenure for sleeping with a grad student, soooo....)

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: agree with your assessment - sounds like they are both in twenties, and if he wasn't married - it's just something that is bound to happen occasionally when you have students and coaches so close in age. Of course if it's against school policy, that's something he should have taken more seriously.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Yeah, I don't think it's grounds for dismissal. Just more ickiness. Quote from the article: "He was a married coach who regularly tweeted Bible verses and talked about the necessity of players having unassailable character to play for his team. "

@Mrs. Pickle: thanks for posting the link

The coach was in his early 20s and wasn't married. This seems more like a workplace romance. Unless against the rules I don't see why he would be fired. He resigned already.

My bro's Godfather married his HS sweetheart- she was a student teacher when they met his junior or senior year. It happens. They've been married over 35 years.

@yoursilverlining: Actually what I said was that he should be fired for breaking school policy. If there is no such policy (I was told there was but I haven't checked myself), then it goes back to what I said about whether she was a minor. ETA- Thank you for your response though. That was literally why I started the thread, to get thoughts that I might not have considered.

IMO it's being made a bigger deal because his mom is famous. If there is something in his contract that says he can't have a relationship with players then he should be fired. I don't see why he shouldn't be able to coach again. His is in his 20s just like the players. They aren't children.

I think it sucks for his wife, but if they were of age I don't really care. If there is a policy against it at the school then I guess he can be disciplined, but that's stupid. If they're adults and it's consensual let them be.

At my high school three of the gym teacher were married to former students. Two acknowledged they were"involved" while their wives were students aka not 18. They still have their jobs.

Not to sound dickish, but how can you be so firm in calling for someone to be fired and lose their livelihood, their reputation, their career etc when you also say you know "virtually no details". The details always matter. That's a pretty serious call to make against someone without knowing anything about the case.

What if it wasn't against school policy to date students? It isn't a blanket rule at every school, and even those where it is, there are often carve outs (ie, you can have relationship but another professor would have to grade the students paper, or be involved where a grade is assigned). What if she is underage? What if he is married and it's a religious school that has a more stringent "morality code"? What would the punishment normally be for code violations? Are there other ethically troubling facts - did he influence other teachers to improve her grades based on their relationship, etc. did he abuse the position of power he had?

I'm hesitant to call for people to be fired (and a firing like that is likely career ruining, at least for the short term) unless the facts support it.

Full disclosure, I'm married to a former professor of mine. We started dating after I had graduated, but our school has no policy barring current student-teacher relationships.

idk, a girl on my college team was seeing the male coach and we all thought it was weird and inappropriate at the time but now they're married with kids. I don't really think it's THAT big of a deal if it's consensual. Definitely not something I would do as a player or a coach, but it certainly shouldn't destroy someone's career. It helps that they were both single. This guy you're talking about is married so makes it worse...

Well, if there was a policy for his job against that than he was rightfully fired but I think he should still be considered as a coaching candidate down the road! It sounds (from reading online) that he is a great coach and I think a mistake like that - provided it was consensual and not with a minor - is more a lapse of judgment than a career ending mistake. Quite frankly, the person who was most negatively affected was his wife if the relationship with the player was consensual. I'm sad for her.

I think breaking policy is inappropriate and taking advantage of an unequal power balance is not ethical. But I do think he should be allowed to coach, I would guess he will have learned his lesson.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a sexual relationship between two available (read not married) adults of legal age.

I have no idea about the situation you are referencing- that is just my opinion based on the information above.

I know virtually no details, because I don't watch news and am going based solely on what my mom said when asking my opinion. But, from what I've heard a college basketball coach (male) was caught having an affair with a player (female). DH, who probably knows more details, has said he should never coach again., and apparently a lot of people are saying that. My mom and I agree that he should be fired, but depending on circumstances (particularly the girl's age, which is unknown), he should just be fired for breaking school policy but leave it at that. As long as it was a consensual thing, not predatory (particularly if the girl was older, not fresh out of high school), I don't see why it's that big of a deal. Students frequently sleep with professors and it's generally overlooked. My aunt married her professor!,

We also think there's virtually no chance a female coach with a male player would get anything at all like this sort of response. My mom thinks men will advocate for harsher punishment than women as as well.

So I'm just curious what people think, and what thoughts I might not have considered, etc.
