@Mrs. Turtle: so I tested out my friend's Hair Gold and it really does work. Before hair gold LO's hair would look dry and grayish brown and with Hair gold it maintains a wet look and richer brown color. It doesn't smell good when you first apply it. :silly:

I haven't read the other responses, so if this all has been said, my apologies. My daughter is biracial, and she has loose curls. Dryness is bad for both my hair and hers (I am a Black woman who does not chemically straighten her hair,so moisture is important). Her curl pattern is not as tight as your child's, but I have liked the Curly Qs line of products. I use the Shampoo as well as the Curly Pudding after I have washed it. I should condition her hair more, and I am looking for so more products, but I would check those out. Good luck.

@lamariniere: I cut my own curly hair and I totally just follow a youtube vid of a woman cutting her own hair! I think she uses the Deva method.

I have curly hair and I don't use shampoo or conditioner. I wash it with baking soda/rinse with apple cider vinegar in the shower about once a month or less. I don't know that I would use that on kids (none of my kids has curls as tight as mine) but you might try skipping shampoo for a while, in combination with other techniques or products listed here for conditioning.

@justjules: I've heard too many of those stories. She already has more hair products than I've ever owned and she's only 20 months! I've also had so many (white) people tell me I'm crazy for putting products in a toddlers hair. They should see it first thing in the morning then they might understand!

Both of my girls have curly hair and I use a lot of products to tame it. The first picture is how it looks in the morning--it's insane. My kids are biracial if a different type, so their curls are not as tight but they are super frizzy.

I use adult conditioner on both of them, shampoo only every other day. I also use a spray leave in detangler/defrizzer (John Frieda Frizz Ease), then I always pull their hair back somehow, even if it's just a partial small ponytail to keep their hair out of their eyes. Then I finish their hair with a light spray gel.

In the morning, I also have a spray curl rejuvenator. I'll post product links below. None of these things make their hair stiff or crispy. Just a little more tame. I have tried dozens of hair products on them but so like trying new things so we switch a lot. Their hair has to be wet to be styled.... wet with spray bottle of water mixed with frizz ease or conditioner.

@Mrs. Turtle: I would look for "dry oils" - oils that absorb better and don't get wet/greasy on hair with low porosity. Dove, L'Oreal and Shea make dry oil sprays for hair that might help you.

@Mrs. Turtle: Yea, the only time I use any product in her hair at this point is when it's freshly wet from bath/shower. I just re-wet it in the AM and the products still seem to be working. The summer humidity actually seems to work in our favor with her, as well (unlike me!) - her curls frequently look better after a day of playing outside.

@peachykeen: She's adorable! So you use the buttercream before bed too? Maybe I'll try that.

@katsupgirl: Thank you! These are some new names I haven't tried.

@PawPrints: Thanks! I've done some research via google too, just looking for some real life suggestions. So many blogs seem to be sponsored by specific product lines.

@lamariniere: Beautiful curls. We aren't allowed to cut her hair while she's in care, and it's not really long enough anyway, but I have heard of these cuts and will keep it in mind for the future if she stays with us.

@avivoca: Good to know! What does her hair look like as an adult? I'm so curious to see what O's hair will look like as it gets longer and thicker. Did her curls stay as tight as when she was little?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I'd love to hear the results. Sounds like we're dealing with a similar issue.

@StrawberryShortie: Yes! This has been a lifesaver. I need to be better about remembering to bring one when we are out as the car seat really messes up the back of her hair.

@Mamaof2: Thanks! I'll add these to the list.

@Charm54: It seems to be a real trial and error process. I'm learning that O's hair seems to be very low porosity, which I think affects what products work and what won't soak in at all (coconut oil).

@FancyGem: Great suggestion. I will check out some of those groups. I want to do her beautiful hair justice.

@coleycam: I've been good about never brushing it and I hardly even comb it these days, just try to detangle with my fingers so I don't break it. Coconut oil doesn't seem to work for her-it's like it just sits on top of the hair and never soaks in.

@gingerbebe: You're the second person today to recommend jojoba oil for that reason. I'll have to pick some up. Thanks!

Jojoba oil is very similar in texture to the oil secreted by human scalps, so you can rub a small amount in your hands and then work through the curls from the ends working in towards the scalp to moisturize as a post-bath treatment when the hair is damp before bed. This might be helpful especially for the dry brittle parts in the back.

I second a lot of lamariniere's tips above. As someone who grew up with (and still has) very curly hair, comb only when hair is wet and never brush it. I personally use Shea Moisture products, as well. I often use coconut oil in my hair sparingly to make it shiny and moisturized when it is damp. Allow hair to air dry, but when much older use one of those large toothed diffusers to cool blow dry it.

One other thing we do, is I have a spray bottle mixed with water and a little conditioner, and I spray it on her hair regularly; in the AM and comb with a wide tooth comb, after bath time, even after swimming. It helps keep her curls glossy and defined.

LO's hair has different textures. For his curls on the top of his head Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie works fine for adding in moisture and styling. He has drier and straighter hair in the back that needs more help. A friend of mine makes an oil (she sells them at festivals) that I bought for the dryer part especially. I'll let you know how it works in a week and send you the link if you want.

I'm biracial with curly hair (but I'm Caucasian/Asian, so not the same texture), my daughter is mostly Caucasian with curly hair, we are both between 2C and 3A. I can't really advise on products since we live abroad and don't have the same things. But for care, NEVER brush it. Only use a wide toothed comb and only comb it when it is wet. Your LO's routine may be slightly different due to texture/dryness, but for both my daughter and I, we wash/condition every other day or every 3 days. After, I spray her hair with a kid's detangler and comb with the wide tooth comb. We always air dry. She sleeps on it damp and it usually looks pretty great in the morning.

I don't know if you are allowed to cut her hair (just to cut of the dry ends), but I did a DYI Deva cut on my DD about a month ago since she had never had a haircut (she's 3.5) and I was super pleased with the results. I watched a few youtube videos and then went to it. The fact that it's curly helps hide any flaws and I was so happy with it that I kind of want to do the Deva on myself now!

My understanding from reading in some other groups is that caring for black/biracial children's hair is a really unique task that requires specific information to do correctly. I would start by googling resources for caring for biracial hair; my guess is you'll find articles that are specifically written for white parents of biracial kids. Probably most would have specific product suggestions, I would think. This came up for me on a quick search: https://adoptionstar.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Black-Hair-Skin-Care-Booklet.pdf

@Mrs. Turtle: here are a couple of things that I've used.

1) baby-toddler: I've used the Cetaphil lotion in her hair. Used Organic Sprout deep condition and Aveeno baby shampoo.

2) toddler-2.5: same washing productions but also used the shea moisture hold and shine (?). It's a spray with an orange/peach label. I also used the curl milk (?)

3) 3-present: Aussie kids shampoo and moist deep conditioner. I use Garneir Fructis products for styling. The Moroccan oil, the leave in conditioner in a green bottle and a pump sleek and shine thing in a clear green bottle. She has a lot of hair and these have been really good.

@Mrs. Turtle: I think it's probably a mixture of both? It seems to mainly tame the frizz for DD and doesn't have much hold, but when I wet her hair in the morning I can still feel the product on her hair so it probably helps define the curls. I also only wash her hair every 2-3 days and that seems to help.

Here's pseudo-messy bed-head (it gets worse) compared to defined curls.

@peachykeen: @Coral: Thanks! I have the Shea Moisture kids curling buttercream. I do really like it, but I'm never sure if it's supposed to be more of a styling product or actually a leave in conditioner. Maybe I need to look at their product line more carefully. That's the only one I've tried and I do use it when we are going out to tame the wild hair, just not sure if it helps moisturize or just helps it look good for a little while.

@Mrs. Turtle: What a cutie! I was also going to recommend Shea Moisture. They have a kids line that would probably be perfect.

I can't comment on the biracial part but my DD has pretty defined ringlets (when tamed) that look like crazy Einstein hair when she first wakes up so I think it might be similar enough

We like the Shea Moisture line of products and I have heard they work well for ethnic hair too. Shampoo/conditioner type seems less important (we use Shea Moisture or Aveeno on her depending on where we're bathing her) but my favorite curl cream after trying many is Shea Moisture curling buttercream. We've also just started using the kids detangler now that her hair is finally growing longer so I spray that, comb through, put a small amount of the curl cream (I rub between my hands and use both hands so it doesn't get greasy in one spot), them comb through again and fluff up the curls with my hands.

When her hair is (always) a mess in the morning, I just spray a ton of water on it, comb through, and fluff up the curls again - no additional product needed.

I'll see if I can find examples of DD's hair if that helps. Good luck! Once I figured out a routine I think the curly hair is actually easier than straight

O is growing quite the head of hair. It's about 5+ inches long, but is so tightly curled it still just sits close to her head. The curls are an inch long at most when they're happy. She is bi-racial. Her hair is soft and healthy on top but very dry and brittle in back. There's still a semi-bald spot where it rubs on the car seat (she hasn't slept on her back in a long time, but it's that same bald spot). From the curl charts I think she's a mix of 3B and 3C. I'm looking for any advice on products, routine, etc. I have trouble finding something that seems to moisturize her hair without leaving it feeling sticky and heavy. It seems like products don't soak in well. I don't shampoo it very often, usually I use a "cleansing conditioner" and then a leave in conditioner.

Any ideas? Pics are her hair when dry and without products, and then after a bath with leave in conditioner in it.
