@FaithFertility: Uggh I am sorry! I think at this point even if she's going to judge you for walking away, maybe that's what you have to do. Does she seriously need to wait till G starts actually copying and saying those words to realize what you've been saying all along is true?

@PawPrints: Just curious, is your LO talking yet? Not trying to start a debate, at all, I just wonder if you'll change your mind the first time you hear your toddler say a curse word... It's crazy how shocking it is to hear!!!

Agree it's more of a respect thing than a language issue, if DH has already asked her to stop. Personally I am fine with my LO learning how to curse and we will continue to curse in front of her, but of course we are respectful of other parents' decisions to not have cursing around their own kids.

@FaithFertility: I would say something first. But then if she doesn't respect that, I would for sure walk away from the conversation the next time it happens. It's pretty disrespectful for her to not even make an effort... I don't think it's that hard to stop swearing!

If she wouldn't take it well from you, maybe your DH could be the one to say something?

@FaithFertility: My MIL has probably thought that about me and DH a few times. But it's simple: blatantly and repeatedly disrespect our wishes as parents and you lose access to our children. Even if it's just for a few minutes to illustrate a point.

@MrsSRS: My DH has a pretty bad mouth I'd say but he definitely filters in front of LO or any child!

I am going to have to do something, she just would take that as me being a b*tch......
If I walked away!
It's hard!!!

How about, "Oh dear. This story has language that is not appropriate." In a regretful sort of tone. Then calmly pick LO up (even better if LO is on her lap!) and walk out of the room.
That's disrespectful of her to not even try. I curse like a sailor. But NEVER in front of other people's children, and rarely in front of my own.

I think it is more of a respect issue than a cursing issue IMO. We swear a lot and don't filter around LO. We may start to once she starts talking more. We also may not. But that will be our choice. I make a point of not swearing around other people's (toddler or older) kids and CERTAINLY if someone asked me not to I would respect that.

@mrbee: No it isn't held back or filtered at all!
I guess I am more hurt now than anything as I can't understand even trying?!
I mean I am no saint either and it happens around them, but for her to have LO in her lap as she says sh** and f**" 10 times?!?!

@FaithFertility: I love to swear myself, but cut way back when my kids were born. I still swear when I'm not near my kids, but not very often in front of them.

I don't think it's too hard of an adjustment, if the person is making even a little effort? If you've asked nicely and she absolutely refuses to change, then the next time it happens again, I would wait a little while and just pick up my kid and go on a walk around the house/block.

I am trying to not be overly dramatic but MIL has a mouth of a sailor, I am not kidding when I say the f bomb is dropped 5-10 times per conversation! She has no filter and even around LO!
I told DH how much it upsets me months ago as he has told her to tone it down as LO is a PARROT! But again today it wasn't the f word but...the word sh** almost 20-40 times as she told us a story ... I mean C'mon!!!!!!
I honestly felt like it was on purpose to see what I would do! I finally did say watch it she will copy you, smiling, but inside I was boiling!
DH has mentioned it multiple times to her too!
What else do I do?!
I just don't understand, why would you even want your grandchild to hear you say such words?!
Even if you said it around your kids and your other grandchild and it was ok, we have said it is not OK with us!
I just feel like she could care less.....hurts as I feel like if you can't even care about respecting us with this small issue....how can I trust you to babysit!
