Aw, sometimes there's nothing like a good ol' fashion sheet cake! I like the dots one at the bottom too, and I was also going to suggest adding jimmies/sprinkles.

@mrs. wagon: some of them really are! They are all quite tasty, lol! We actually have a bakery that does more trendy cakes, but they don't quite nail that birthday cake flavor, lol!

oh and the sprinkles idea is great! Maybe I'll just ask for writing and then do that....!

When we did Wagon Jr.'s last birthday party at one of those party factories that provides the cake, I bought some star-shaped big sprinkles and just "finished" the cake with those. It actually looked pretty good without them though. But Wagon jr. loves his sprinkles :)

I've seen cakes decorated with ice cream cones? That might be cute. The "ice cream" being scoops of different colored frosting.

I'm thinking the dots at the bottom (it is a girly cake we would choose different colors of course!)

So, my MIL has generously offered to buy us a sheet cake from a bakery for Scribble's 1BD. I just dunno what sort of decoration to go for. It is a very traditional bakery, ie-- roses and script is the classic choice. They can do other stuff, but generally classic styling.

I don't want any licensed characters, and our party is theme-free. We're doing an ice cream social, so I guess there could be some sort of ice-cream-related decoration? The only other thing I can think of is his words. He says duck and doggie, so those could be incorporated into the cake and it would have some meaning to him.

But I just don't want anything cheesy and none of those (excuse my language) spermy balloons!

My MIL is genrously donating it and she is excited to use this bakery because it is the same one she used for DH's and DSIL's cakes growing up. So I don't think it would be possible for me to be like, I want a plain white cake to decorate myself.

Making a topper is a possibility also? I would do that part though!
