If you end up going the bought route, I found some cute jorts--haha, jean shorts--at H&M and they were probably $20. And they are long--slightly longer than mid thigh.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I think the point of buying them at Old Navy vs Goodwill is that they would be consistent (you'll never get 5 the same at Goidwill) and they're specifically designed to be what they are. Personally I'd rather spend money on a finished product I could try on. But that's me.

@Littlebit7: was thinking maybe goodwill could have some good 80s jeans that would work for this! Sort of fitted in the waist and blousy in the hips! For as long as I've been an adult fitted hip jeans have been the thing. Even when they were boot cut the thighs we're still tight.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I realized after I posted this that I should have clarified that I'm going to check out Goodwill for the jeans! My favorite shorts are rolled up cutoff looking shorts from old Navy but I was thinking why spend 25 for one pair when I can get five pairs at Goodwill for that price. Was thinking maybe some 80s mom jeans would do well...I have some worn out skinny jeans I could use but I think they would look dorky cut off.

EDIT worn not work! I do not work out in jeans. I hardly work out at all.

If you want to diy, I'd start with boyfriend jeans instead of skinny. I've never found skinny jeans end up making good cutoffs

I feel like Gap has options like this I got some on clearance last year and they are knee length shorts but you could just cut them off

I used to like cutting jeans above the knee and folding them a couple of times for a Bermuda shorts look.

I want to make some cutoff shorts but I'm sort of beyond the daisy duke look...I need something with a little coverage. Anyone have tips for making a more modest pair of cutoffs? Buy a larger size maybe and cut a slanted line? I tend to buy skinny jeans so if I bought my own size and cut them at an angle it would be way too much. If I cut my own skinny jeans straight across I think they would look a little frumpy.
