I've discovered that meal planning and only grocery shopping once a week has cut out a ton of food waste and also saved us a lot of $. It's rare that something goes uneaten and we can always bring it to work for lunch if we don't think we'll get to it in time.

I've really started using my freezer a lot, I'll immediately freeze any meats that we won't use in the next 48 hours and I use frozen veggies to make LO's purees. And I've pretty much stopped buying super perishable foods fresh like berries because they are really expensive and need to be eaten immediately.

@scg00387: Your crushed tortilla chip bits reminds me that DH saves the crumbs from the bags and sprinkles them on top of his salads.

Meal planning helps a lot. I've been freezing things too. For example I will chop onion and freeze some to use in soup and chili. I find if I prep things ahead of time, when I'm in the mood, it's more likely going to get used. We try and eat fresh foods first, and keep our quick (frozen pizza, stuffed chickens etc) meals for when fresh is running low. I buy bananas green so that we still have fresh fruit several days after we went shopping. We freeze our bread/bagels so they don't get wasted.

I find I waste less when I prep food ahead of time. Like if I buy a pound of carrots, I go ahead and peel them all, use what I need, then steam/freeze the rest.

I buy the smallest size possible, even though it might not be cheaper...but I don't have to pay to store it or toss it when I have forgotten what it is.

I often make fried rice or quinoa to use up extra veggies/meat. Planning out meals rather than just buying what looks good at the time helps to cut down on waste - it's something I'm working on!

Freezing coconut milk and other sauces/broth is a great idea!

Planning meals helps a lot, so I am not just buying random stuff at the store. Also I usually make sure that 1 of my planned dinners can wait until the next week in case something comes up (we end up eating leftovers, eating out, or whatever). That way it isn't like I have 5 days of fresh meals that are "use 'em or lose 'em" and we have more flexibility. I also try to save the remains of stuff I open-- like pasta sauce or chicken broth by freezing it in cubes for future recipes. And of course in recipe planning it helps if you pick meals where the ingredients overlap. Like this week we are sort of having a mexican week where we are having both tacos and tostadas, because we like to buy fresh pico and guac and we'd never finish them in just 1 meal.

We've had these threads before, but I'm starting a new one! I'm always trying to think of new ways to make sure 100% of the food we buy, gets eaten.

Today I froze half a can of coconut milk, and plan to figure out a plan for it this weekend.

Yesterday I added all the crushed tortilla chip bits at the bottom of the bag on top of our taco meat in soft tortillas - it was so good!

What about you?
