@brownie: Yes he's pooping quite a lot. I have to say we change him 4-6 times a day normally and 4-5 of them has poop in it. I don't know if he is gaining weight anymore because I hided the scale a while back because it is not good for any of us mentally. He did fine at the 9 month check-up though (I think he was 18 lb 8 oz @ 9 months). Overall he's been very active and is fine, and sleeping through the night...... We'll find out if he's still gaining weight fine next week at the GI check up...

@winniebee: I offer 5 to 5.5 oz @ bottle (a total of 20 oz a day) but the problem is he won't drink! I do offer 5.5 oz @ before bedtime but he'd drink 4 oz the most. That's me holding him and he'd drink, say, 2.5-3 oz, then push the bottle away... then I'd put him down on his bouncy and he'd be playing with the toys above while I could maybe get him to drink more. Sometimes he'd drink 2oz only, and I'd have to run downstairs and try another chair .... argh. Nowadays he has the wits to use his hands to cover his mouth. argh. Seriously I tried. If I kept offering it will get him upset and he'd start crying.

I am so tired of "being concerned" to a point I just let it be... I guess I'll find out what we should do at the GI appt next week...

@lollipop: I'd be fine if he's still taking 16-18 oz - but it is just lately he is only taking 11-14 oz a day. On top of that, he doesn't like to drink water. I am not really sure how he stays hydrated to be honest but he still pees and drools.

I agree with Brownie on adding ounces before bedtime. I can pretty much guarantee that my LO will take a bigger bottle right before bed when he's tired and there are no distractions.

My ped is the opposite. At LO's 9 mths visit, i was told to cut her formula to 16-18 oz a day so she'll eat more solids. She wanted her to get used to eating a variety of differerent foods (my daughter is a very picky eater) so that she'll be ready for homo milk at 1 yr...or else continues with the formula since she isnt getting enough of the other nutrients in.

@irene: My son goes through phases where he drinks less than the 24 oz a day....he had a cold this week and has only been taking 18-20. I haven't even been giving him much solids. It's all he wants and it's not like I can tie him down and make him drink more, you know? I just watch the wet diaper output.

Is he still gaining weight? Is he peeing and pooping? Is there something other than quantity that concerns you? Are you offering and he's refusing (which I assume is the case)? Those would be the questions I answer.

If you are concerned you could try adding more ounces when they won't affect meals such as before bedtime. And it also depends in if they are formula or breast milk ounces because those are processed differently.

@BabyBoecksMom: Yours and mine are so much alike in all the odd things! Argh!

@prettylizy: Sometimes I wish we were still nursing so I won't know for sure how many oz exactly is he getting!

@winniebee: We haven't gone back to the GI doc yet but we'll have a follow up next week together with a nutritionist appointment. I'll ask them then....

I did call the pediatrician nurse a few weeks ago, and she said I should make sure he gets 24 oz @ day and told me to cut back on one solids meal (we are doing 3 meals currently)! I kinda ignored her because I've been hearing 16-24 is fine (and back then he was getting around 17 a day). Like you said, I just can't force him when he doesn't want to drink.

What did your GI doc say about it? I agree with Pretty Lizy - the wet and dirty diapers seems to be a good indication of whether baby is getting enough. At the end of the day, you can't force your baby to drink more....only gather as much info as you can and consult with your doctor when concerned.

LO is down to 3 (sometimes 4 if she's super fussy) nursing sessions a day right now at 8.5 months. She loves solids and eats like a little piggy at all her meals. My standby is- if she is still having a normal amount of wet and dirty diapers and her weight is not dropping, she is fine. I let her self regulate for the most part.

That sounds a lot like my LO right now. DD flip flops between eating more solids than formula and vise versa. She'll also go through times where it seems like she hardly eats. It's frustrating! I just go off her cues instead of worrying about if she's getting enough. From what it sounds like, you LO is getting what he needs.

I think it really depends on your baby! Our pediatrician recommends breast milk or formula as the main source of nutrition until age 1, following the "food before 1 is just for fun" so we are going with that. It helps that LO (11 months) is not terribly interested in solids yet. That being said, I know lots of moms whose LOs are just ravenous and weren't satisfied with formula/breast milk, so they are doing lots more solids and it seems to be working fine for those babies! (Strangely it seems like it's mostly boys.)

I guess my thinking would be that as long as LO is happy and healthy (and hydrated), it's probably OK. That's what I keep telling myself anyway!

Feeding has always been a dilemma in my household.

LO is almost 10 months. We are giving him 4 bottles and 3 solid meals a day. Lately he's been eating more solids, but majorly cutting down on breastmilk/formula intake. He used to take 16-18 oz a day, but now he's down to 12-14 oz a day, or less! He is eating 4-6 oz of solids each meal though.

Many people did say that between 9-12 months babies should be taking 16-24 oz a day of breastmilk or formula. Since he doesn't meet the "quota", should I be concerned....? He seems fine though and I am so sick of being concerned about him eating/not eating...etc. I feel like the story of my life has been when he drank more milk, I worried that he wasn't taking more solids and vice versa. This is getting old!!

How about your LOs?
