DH called Att and threatened to leave and lo and behold, they dropped our cable $60/month and dropped out cell phones $50 a month!! So we're satisfied for a good 12 months

Dh and I asked some friends last night and they are paying $120/month for a BETTER PACKAGE than us. So DH wants to call and see if they'll give us a new user deal, if not, switch to a neighboring competitor (Charter) and use their new user deal for a year....then look at internet type services.

So we'll see!

We just did this. We cut Comcast cable but we upgraded our wireless package and got ourselves a better modem and router so that our streaming is very good (previously, it was really slow). Now we use:
- Hulu plus (we use this on an Apple TV that was gifted)
- Amazon prime (fire stick)
- Digital antenna (works great for watching sports games)
- Misc. other free channels on Apple TV (like PBS Kids)

I am considering Sling TV once LO is a little older so she can watch Disney Jr. but for now we are ok.

Hmmm, this Sling is the first time I'm hearing of it and I'm very intrigued. The only reason I can't get DH to cut the cord is sports, but if he can have ESPN and we get a digital antenna for local events, I bet I can convince him to save 60+ dollars a month!

@jetsa: Ok good. A friend of mine at work said you can purchase a season pass to stream baseball, which would work.

It sounds like maybe a combo of Hulu+Amazon Prime+streaming sports might be the ticket for us? So we can watch what we want when we have time

@loveisstrange: I'll keep that in mind, thanks! AT&T is on my shit list right now.

@blackbird: on Sling TV it just comes through exactly like you're watching cable. Except weirdly, some of the stations' commercials don't come through and they just show a "we'll be right back" screen during commercial breaks. I don't think you can DVR anything but we've only had it a couple weeks and I haven't played around with it that much.

@blackbird: Haha, we're not sports people so that's not really an issue for us. I do know that our neighbors in England used to watch the games streaming online and they'd hook their laptop to their TV. Im not sure what website they used or what, but they did it. But yeah, Charter is the far superior ISP. AT&T is much more expensive for slower service. Charter has increased our speed for free twice in the last year. From 30 to 60, and then from 60 to 100. Granted, we normally get closer to 60 but we do get near 100 sometimes.

We just have basic cable, Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime streaming (we also have Amazon Fire). So we don't have a DVR and DH can only watch sports live. I'm sure he'd rather have access to more sports, but the cost savings is worth it for us.

We cut the cable cord close to a year ago. We have Hulu and Netflix, and an antennae. Hulu gives us almost every one of our tv shows, and the antennae allows DH to watch sports every so often. We've always been too busy for him to sit around watching ESPN much.

The only shows we don't get and miss are from CBS, like Big Bang Theory. They have an app that you can pay like $5/month for, but DH really hates paying for broadcast tv shows. I guess we could watch it with the antennae, but we're never on the ball enough for that. The other shows we can't get on Hulu, we end up paying for. So in the past year we've paid for Downton Abbey and Walking Dead. We save so much on not having cable that I don't mind spending the money on those shows. Plus, then you don't have any commercials.

We use an apple tv, so all of our Hulu, Netflix and paid for (through iTunes) shows go through that. Easy peasy.

We don't have any other cable options in our area besides Comcast (boo!), so this is what we do. We watch Netflix and Amazon Prime through our blu-ray player. We also have a Mohu Leaf (digital antenna) that gets us the major networks, PBS, and some other random channels that we never watch. We only had internet but then Comcast changed something so now it ends up being less expensive for us to have basic cable + internet. We just have a cable box for 1 TV, and we can watch some local sports games that way. For other sports, we use the WatchESPN app, and hook DH's laptop to the TV. We can't watch every single game this way, but we can still see most of what we want to watch. I'll have to check out SlingTV!

For our cable, I called them and told them I wanted to downgrade to the most basic package because I had Amazon Prime and could watch most of my cable shows there. So the woman dropped my price $50 and let me keep my 2nd tier channels.

We also finally changed our provider/got rid of cable because the intro rates that we had more than doubled. We don't have cable any more, just Netflix...it works for us because we literally don't watch TV outside of old episodes of Handy Manny and The Blacklist. Oh, and I might start watching old eps of Mad Men, lol.

Charter's internet service in our area is WAY better than AT&T. We pay $39.99/m for 100mb internet service.

We only have Netflix, so I cant comment on cable. We've been happy with our Charter service though.

@creativemomma15: I was *just* reading up on Sling TV! I don't understand it right now and will have to do some more research. I feel like we could easily keep a package under $100 (easily!) if we just add the big channels we watch.

@My Only Sunshine: Nice! We already have Amazon prime and i have a fire tv stick. And i wanted to get Netflix for my maternity leave but i can't justify it with this stupid cable bill! So do you have the option to watch at your leisure?

Most of our shows are ABC/NBC/TNT...so i feel like we are being very wasteful with our tv!

@blackbird: We dropped our cable. We got a Roku. We have Netflix and Amazon prime for TV binge watching (some movies, but they're not great).

We also just got Sling TV, which is awesome! It's $20 per month and you get ESPN, Disney, Food Network, HGTV, and some other channels. We watch it through the Roku. http://www.cnet.com/news/sling-tv-everything-you-need-to-know/

We don't have cable right now, but Dish is offering something called Sling TV... My understanding is that it's live TV but you stream it through your internet through some sort of device (roku, PS3, etc) I think their basic package has 20 channels including ESPN, TNT, Food Network, and more... My DH is interested in it for sports and what not. We have an antenna otherwise for the basic network channels. You can add on other packages for an additional $5 to get more channels.

We have U-verse and they are royally pissing me off. I downgraded our package and they subsequently jacked a bunch of prices up so now we actually have the highest bill we've ever had.

So we're pricing other options.

We have high speed internet and a mid level cable package. It's two notches above basic, but certainly not the fanciest one. Sports is important for DH--baseball and football. And we use a DVR because, well, we never watch things live.

What options are we not considering besides other local companies? I know there's internet tv, but I don't know much about it, and we would like to have some live options (see: sports)
