Thank you all for your suggestions ! I’m going to look into slowly switching to more gentle products and go from there. And get a rec for a good esthetician

@babybunnylove: This is actually what my dermatologist suggested!

He said to stay far far away from anything with salicylic acid. It will overdry and make things worse. I used CeraVe (and the generic CVS version) for several years and it got much better.

Just recently switched to Acure products because I wanted something more natural while pregnant. I've been using the scrub, superfruit cleanser and mattifying moisturizer and am still having good results (but pregnancy hormones might be helping too...)

I get them on my chin (hormonal! the worst!) and the only thing that shrinks them is the Renee Rouleau anti-cyst serum.
https://www.reneerouleau.com/products/anti-cyst-treatment
It seriously works, without bringing them out like a regular pimple (I used to use the black salve that smells like burning tires and does that, ugh).

@MACSUNSHINE: Agree with going to a reputable esthetician. When I was gearing up for my wedding, I got facials once a month for about six months and it did absolute wonders for my cystic acne. What helped the most was to get a professional's opinion about my particular skin's needs, and I overhauled my entire regimen. After making that change, it's been mostly under control! FWIW, I use mostly Dermalogica products and now after moving quite a bit, I still try to seek out estheticians who use Dermalogica products and have had a lot of success.

I went to the dermatologist and tried the antibiotics they prescribed. The lotions and creams. The best thing that worked? Stopped using any harsh washes, toners, etc. Started washing with CereVe face wash, witch hazel toner and CereVe daily lotion. It took a few weeks for my face to get used to it but now it’s the best it’s been. Also not touching my face when I have any kind of bump/ breakout.

I've had painful cystic acne on my cheeks and jawline before. It sucks so much. Each time I've worked with a dermatologist and they really are the way to go. You can't battle bad cystic acne with just over the counter products. They'll probably put you on some sort of pill for a few months and give you some cremes to use as needed. It will make a world of difference.

Just want to second the cutting of dairy. I was suffering with awful cystic acne around my jawline that nothing helped. I didn't 100% cut dairy, but I greatly reduced it and it's been amazing! (I have a little bit of cheese once a week but that's it, and I often opt for non-cow's milk cheese. Dairy-free ice cream, coconut milk in my coffee, etc.) I wish I'd done it years ago. Took a few months to get the full benefit.

Cystic acne depending on where it is occurring is either hormonal or diet driven. Chin area tends to be hormonal. I have suffered with it on and off for years. You can try cutting sugars and dairy which are also triggers. Luckily motherhood and nursing/pregnancy hormones keep it at bay. A dermatologist can inject the cystic spot with cortisone to reduce it.

The only thing I have really found to be successful is to work with a reputable esthetician. It is a financial commitment but they have light therapies they can use to really reduce the inflammation, to prevent it and also address it when it does occur. I lucked out in finding one that I have been going to for close to a decade that has seriously changed my skin. I hardly ever need the light therapy now but they treated it immediately whenever I needed it.

I have crazy dry skin, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But I always put neosporin on my cystic acne and it helps a ton. That and trying not to touch my face usually helps me a lot. When I switched jobs I realized I was constantly touching my chin and hairline unconsciously, and once I stopped that it helped a lot.

Bump and following. I’ve heard a retinol can help so I’m hoping to try that when I’m finished nursing.

I’ve been getting some cystic bumps along my chin. I’m pretty sure they are hormonal
But they suuuuuck. Won’t pop and are so painful. I have some Mario Badescu drying lotion but it seems to really only be effective if you can pop the pimple. Here is a rundown of my current skincare routine. Any suggestions ?

Am:
Wipe with warm washcloth
Philosophy renewed hope in a jar
Simple spf daily moisturizer

PM
Wash with Origins checks and balances
Philosophy renewed hope in a jar

I use exfolikate 2x a week and drink a ton of water dayly. Upwards of 90 oz usually.

Pretty basic but I’m wondering if I am over exfoliating my face ? Or if that even matters w hormonal acne ?
