You should be able to find out from your doctor's office how much the tests costs pre-insurance, and use that to figure out how much it will cost with insurance.

We didn't do it (or any genetic testing at all, including the NT scan). We had no family history of any genetic issues on either side and we wouldn't terminate in the event of an issue anyways, so we figured we'd skip it and save ourselves the worry.

BTW, in retrospect I wish I hadn't bothered with it. My RE was pushing for it and I didn't totally understand why and didn't question it. The only value in it would have been if we'd needed IVF and one of was a carrier, we could've had the embryos tested and only implanted healthy ones. I wish I'd pushed back on it, but at the time I was kind of clueless.

I didn't have the testing done with my first baby, but when they tested him for it in the hospital, he was a carrier. I got tested and was not a carrier, so my husband must be the culprit but it was much cheaper for me to test.

@psw27: It is an autosomal recessive disease, so if you know your family and your SO's family history fairly well, you can figure out how likely you are to be at risk. (This is why I refused the test...we have no history of cystic fibrosis in either family. This is not a fail-safe way to think about it, because the disease requires two carriers to have a child, who, at only a fraction of the time, may have the disease, but I felt comfortable enough with that.)

@shootingstar gotta love the crazy loopholes right? Insurance is so confusing!

@weagle and @beyond2 that's kind of where I am leaning at this point. I feel like some of these tests will just compound the anxiety and worry that already comes along with being pregnant.

@psw27: Talk with the doctor's office. Just like @ShootingStar: it was out-of-network, and for us, nearly $3000. I was MIGHTY pissed because I refused the testing and they tested me anyway. It turns out that the office had an agreement with the lab and I ended up being charged $25. That didn't stop me from being outraged, though...

We skipped all of the tests of this nature. Our philosophy is that if we aren't going to terminate based on the knowledge, there was no point to test. Since the tests aren't always accurate and you don't really know the severity until birth I figured we'd worry ourselves too much and it wouldn't be productive worrying!

Check with whoever you can, for sure. FWIW, we declined all tests like that. Our risks are low, and the outcome wouldn't change our decision to not terminate any pregnancy. We feel comfortable waiting until 20 week anatomy scans.

I spoke with them and they tried to say "it depends on how your doctor bills it and which lab does the testing" -- but I gave her the billing code my doctor would be using. I might try again with another customer service rep...

I think it was ~$1500 when we had it done and I was really pissed off about it. It was an out of network lab and all our other testing was in-network. I ended up contesting it since I had no idea how expensive it was going to be when I agreed to it and no clue the lab was out of network. Luckily the insurance company agreed with me.

Definitely check with your insurance.

The test was recommended to us as well, and we did it despite neither of us having a family history. Turns out, I'm a carrier (though thankfully DH is not).

@psw27: Your best bet is to call your insurance. Pricing will vary depending on carrier.

Hi Bees,

Just looking for some advice on whether or not to get the cystic fibrosis testing.

My insurance, which changed its policy on coverage recently, (awesome) now requires that I meet the $300 deductible and then pay 10% of the cost. Any bees recall how much this test costs? I'm not trying to sound cheap, but I don't really want to spend $800 or something on a test that I don't really feel is necessary. (I have no family history and DH does not either, to the best of our knowledge of course. My doctor recommends it since we are Caucasian and its a 1/29 chance we are carriers. Also, we would not terminate based on this test)

We have plenty of other medical bills that will come along with pregnancy and delivery, so I am just trying to make smart decisions.

Advice? How much did it cost? Did you do it - yay or nay? Thanks!
