My mom and sister have frequent cysts, but don't have PCOS. I have PCOS, but don't have cysts (seems counter-intuitive, but I have all of the other symptoms/characteristics). Hopefully they're just cysts that go away on their own and don't cause problems.

My wife had a cyst removed from her ovary and another one showed up less than a few months later (7-8 cm.) She wasn't diagnosed with PCOS but she has symptoms that makes me think she might in the future.She was on bcp to reduce the size but she hates it. I do worry about it affecting her fertility. But I have a few friends who got pregnant several times after a PCOS diagnosis.

Before I had LO, I had cysts on both my ovaries. It was not PCOS related. They eventually cleared up, but it took several months for them to go away. Ironically enough, they went away right before I got pregnant.

@alohaorchid: Yes, mine were found in February. They were endometriomas ("chocolate cysts"). I had a laparoscopy a month ago and they diagnosed me with Stage IV endometriosis and removed it. Did they mention that your cysts could be endo?

@alohaorchid: DOR = diminished ovarian reserve, or not a lot of eggs left in the ovaries basically. It's most likely not the case and your doctor would be able to tell by doing a count of your follicles on CD3 and some basic tests like AMH and FSH. If you've had enough testing to know you have MFI though, someone might have suspected it by now.

Cysts on the ovaries are very common - 20-30% of women have them while significantly less have PCOS. The hallmark of PCOS is hyperandrogenism - elevated androgen levels or clinical signs of androgen excess (facial hair, acne, etc). So if you do not have these signs, it is probably unlikey that you have PCOS!

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I guess I really need to get the further testing done to really find out for sure what's going on. My doctor just took a look at the ultrasound results, said "multiple cysts on each ovary, most likely PCOS" and kind of left at that.

@spaniellove: What's DOR?

Yes, I found out towards the end of TTC (which took a long time) that I was getting cysts some cycles. And I most definitely did not have PCOS. It's an issue that can happen with DOR, not that I'm saying that's what you have. In my case the follicle was not rupturing and it was becoming a cyst that persisted into the next cycle.

ETA: FWIW I also had follicles that started growing way too early at the end of the previous cycle, which looked like cysts on CD3 because they were bigger than they should have been. At that point it didn't matter that they weren't cysts because they were useless as follicles.

Yes! I had a rather large cyst on my left ovary and a small one on my right, the left one was so big they wanted to monitor it closely so it didn't get bigger/burst - but it went away on its own. I had semi-irregular cycles before.

Try not to worry too much yet! My symptoms were identical to yours (ovarian cysts, two ruptured cysts and uterine polyps but no weight issues, regular cycles, etc.), and while I was eventually diagnosed with PCOS, it hasn't affected our ability to TTC.

I have PCOS, and it's not just having some cysts on your ovaries, it's having tens or even hundreds of little cysts within the lining of your ovaries, so it depends on what kind of cysts you have. Also, you can have PCOS without having insulin resistance (which is me). However, with your regular cycles, I wouldn't allow it to bother you too much. I, unfortunately, have ridiculously long cycles as a result of my PCOS, so that has led to some medical interventions. But my doctor made it clear that I can definitely get pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy despite my PCOS. So it will be ok!! :)

Honestly, I'm not sure PCOS is always the huge deal that people make it out to be. There are SO MANY people who live with it and have babies with it. I think the ones that have issues are just more vocal about it.

I have PCOS (which is usually marked by having many small cysts all lined up in your ovaries, sort of like a pearl necklace). I've also had larger cysts on my ovaries that the doctor said are in no way related to PCOS. They're caused by the corpus luteum healing itself instead of disintegrating after the egg is released.

I wouldn't worry too much until you have more news. Especially if your cycles appear to be regular

@pui: that's great news, congrats! :)

I've been off BC for about 2.5 years now and only started getting tests done. We have mild MFI so I thought that was causing us not to get pregnant, until I got the results of the ultrasound. My doctor wasn't too interested in how regular my cycles are, he saw the cysts and said it's most likely PCOS. I left kind of upset knowing that PCOS can be a huge deal.

That's a good point on the OPK's, thanks!

I've had cysts (large ones too) and do not have PCOS. They go away with time or pop which is extremely painful but I've never had issues with my periods and I got pregnant with LO very easily. They actually discovered a 8 cm cyst on my right ovary at my first ultrasound with LO. They thought I was further along but she was feeling my cyst not baby.

It's definitely possible to have cysts in your ovaries and not have PCOS. I think doing a few more tests to cross check is a good idea. I'm assuming your doctor is going to be doing CD3 and AMH blood work. Do you know how many cysts you had in each ovary?

I'd be weary of OPKs for now. PCOS can cause positives that look like normal positives, but then you may still not ovulate (happened to me so many times). Still, the fact you are having regular cycles is a good sign. Charting is a good idea!

Just a sidenote, I have PCOS and I became pregnant shortly after being diagnosed with it, so it's certainly possible to overcome it.

Has anyone here had any experience with ovarian cysts and have it not turn out to be PCOS?

I had an ultrasound done, which showed that I have cysts on both ovaries. More tests are required to determine if it's PCOS, but I haven't been able to get them done yet.

I have very regular cycles, get positive OPK's when I'm supposed to, no weight issues, I don't temp but I'm going to be starting it this cycle. I'm clutching to any hope that I don't have PCOS
