@Shizaz: Those were the first two issues that came to my head immediately, too! I think we worry more about child abductions than getting hit by a car, but the latter is more likely and just as dangerous. In either case, there's not much you could do from down the street (or however far away home is).

I'd either walk my kid or drop them off if I feel like they are too young to be responsible enough to go alone, or if they are old/mature enough, I wouldn't monitor them at all.

@HabesBabe: This was my thought too. What if a stranger tried to lure her into his car, or she didn't look both ways and walked into traffic... He couldn't prevent most things that parents worry about the most when their kids walk to school. He would just see it happen and not be able to do anything about it.

So I don't think it really acts as protection. It's a good way to keep an eye out and make sure she actually goes to school and doesn't skip though.

I think it's kinda pointless-- if something majorly bad were to happen, it's not like he could intervene.

Haha, so funny! My DH and FIL were playing with a drone at the farm last weekend and it scared my kids so badly. They probably knew DH would try to spy on them with it in the future.

If it's just about safety while walking to school, then I don't have a problem with it. I don't really see it as different than actually walking with her (well, maybe a little more lazy ;-) ) But when I first read the topic of this thread, I thought it was more like monitoring her to make sure she's doing what she's supposed to be doing -- like with an older girl, keeping an eye out for her staying out too late or something. Now THAT would be very Big Brother-ish.

Its funny - in this day and age you cant win - you let your 10 and 6 yr old walk home alone and you get CWS called on you - if you watch your child walk to school with a drone you are an over protective parent!

I'd totally do this. I will also be tracking LO with any iphone/smart phone she gets.

If he were really a helicopter parent, he wouldn't let an 8-year old walk to school! So, maybe in some ways, drone parenting is better :silly:

This dad used his drone to watch his eight-year-old daughter walk to school!

http://www.local8now.com/home/headlines/Dad-watches-over-daughter-with-drone-300856231.html

Everyone is scandalized but I bet in 10 years, this will be pretty common. Helicopter Parenting 2.0... aka Drone Parenting. Maybe kids will even start playing outdoors again!
