@looch: Apparently, he writes a lot for Time (I had no idea...stopped getting Time a few years ago). Is this the article you mean? http://time.com/3987886/kareem-abdul-jabbar-black-lives-matter/ I would just like to make sure I read the right one.

With regards to the original question...I have absolutely no idea. My son is only 2, so I honestly haven't given it much thought.

I read a great article in Time Magazine by Kareem Abdul Jabaar...try searching for it.

I think this conversation will be different for us because my daughter is black and her dad is black.

Still, this is a great post, because how do you explain systems of inequality to little ones? I'm still wrapping my head around it. And how do you do it in a way that doesn't make a black child especially fearful or lose the childlike sense of endless possibility and optimism? DH & I will be discussing this today!

My son asked me this today, and I was pretty surprised! But then I noticed we were walking past a local church marquee that had a huge "Black Lives Matter" sign up in big letters. So he was just reading the sign, and was curious what it meant.

We had a long talk about race and policing, but I wasn't sure what the appropriate level of detail was for a five year old. We'll probably pick up the conversation again later, after I've had a chance to collect my thoughts a bit.

How would you have responded to your child if they were around 5-6 years old?
