Note, we plan to use the formula as a tax deduction. We will go over the minimum. But anything above regular formula price can be put be a medical deduction if you meet the level.

@Coco Bee: I'm no doctor, but my understanding is that these formulas still may have traces of dairy or soy, but the proteins are pre-digested. Babies with dairy intolerances (not allergies) have difficutlies digesting milk and soy proteins so these formulas make it easier.

We had to do Neocate. It is an amino acid based formula. We started formula at 9 months old BUT we are mostly breastfed even now at 18 months old. The Neocate was so expensive and he started refusing it at about 10 months old (and refused anything in a bottle) (I looked but I didn't find any extra unopened cans even though I don't think we used it all). After he turn 1 he has been on Neocate Splash which is another amino acid based milk like drink. We need it for the extra fats (he's so tiny). It is $5 for 8 oz so we keep the breastfeeding up (he gets that at daycare). We haven't had a problem with pumping or having milk available to him even when I worked full time. It's nice at around 6 months he really extended feedings and he could have solids instead of milk.

I agree with others that neocate and elocare works for some kids. I am just so scared to even think about going back to what we had. We have been trialing dairy and soy and I had a large amount this past weekend. He had the hardest time trying to poop today. He was up most of last night in pain again (he doesn't scream anymore but he doesn't sleep). And today he kept telling me "poop poop" and he would strain and fart. It was so difficult for me to watch.

If I locate a can I'll let you know.

Question: if it is soy free and dairy free- what is the base ingredient?

I EBF and haven't ever had the need for formula but I'm genuinely curious because I'm anti-soy and would like to have an option for my friends who are anti-soy as well.

@erwoo: so informative, thank you:) I hope not to wean LO anytime soon but I do plan on doing both formula and breastmilk at some point...I don't see myself being in the EBFeeding club all year...maybe only the first 4-6months, honestly.

@winniebee: you may have already done this...but if you sign up on Enfamil's website (and Similac's)..they will send you $5 off coupons every month! I signed up at 5 months pregnant and Now I have like...15 coupons:) It's pretty nice. You can't combine them and you can't use them online, but if you say these products are available at Target, it may be worth signing up and getting those coupons.

@TurtleDoves: : ). I also have gotten nutramigen at target and cvs- it's just with the other formulas! Remember dairy stays in your system a few weeks. Totally sucks!

My oldest had both dairy and soy protein allergies as an infant and I gave him some Alimentum while EBF'ing him just to get him used to it when I weaned him which I did at 8 months. I gave him a small bottle of formula a day after I nursed him before bed time. So he didn't have any trouble taking it when I weaned him.

Also, you can ask your son's allergist (or whichever doctor he saw) to write a letter to your insurance to see if they will cover his formula. But there has to be a definite diagnosis of the allergies. We did and it took a couple of months but they did agree to pay it which was a huge help. I think how long it takes depends on which insurance company you use. We were using United Health Care at the time. But not all insurance will pay for it; but worth a try!

And you can buy both Similac's Alimentum and Enfamil's Nutramigen at Target, Walmart, and most grocery stores. I bought some online which can be tricky but just do some research and read all the user reviews and make sure to inspect each can when you get it to make sure it's not opened or damaged. Sometimes Target will have them on sale which was nice. But online was cheaper overall...

@winniebee: gotch ya.Thank you:)...I am going searching today then for one for those...it would put my mind at ease knowing I have something to feed him in case I forget and have some cheese or something with milk in it. It's so easy to forget over the holidays when i'm stuffing my face when everything I see:)

@winniebee: I just realized Elecare and Neocate aren't as expensive as I thought...but they are only sold in bulk and only online. urgh...Where do you get your Nutramigen? Does your pharmacist place an order for you?

@runsyellowlites: I can't always predict it because my son isn't on any sort of feeding schedule.....also: my supply isn't enough to pump anything extra except one a day and that gets used at night when DH feeds LO.

My son is on Nutramigen - it's a pre-digested formula (like Elecare and Neocate) but is not AS pre-digested. It works well for many babies who have MSPI. My son has been on it since 4 months (at that time he got 50/50 breastmilk and formula) and has been on it exclusively since 4.5 months (when he wsa still having a little bloody stool on my breastmilk). He's responded quite well.

It's expensive, but not as expensive as Elecare/Neocate. Also check with your insurance about whether it is covered under your policy. Supposedly ours is (though I'm still fighting to get an actual check).

Once opened, it is only good for one month...

Those are the only real safe ones! =/

Nutramigen & Alimentum are considered safe & hypo-allergenic BUT both still have quite a bit of casein so it may still be an issue. =/

I just pump for when I will be away from DD or if I may be longer than I thought.

Although as of right now I am EBF, I'd like to have an emergency tin of formula in the house for those days that I don't have anything pumped, or for pumping and dumping nights. I am looking for a small tin.
My son can't have soy or dairy....so my options are limited.
The only 2 brands of formulas I found that are soy-free as well as dairy-free (Neocate and Elecare) are SO EXPENSIVE!
I'm sorry, but I refuse to pay $55-$100 for an "emergency" formula that may or may not even be used more than a handful of times.
Help?

ETA: OK, so I'm dumb I guess....it is $210.00 for a case of 6....which means about $36 each....but I only want one of each brand....not cases. But these things aren't available in my state and I can only order them online directly from the manufacturer.
