@Adira: our LO is also allergic to dairy, and has never drank any milk!

Our ped gastroenterologist said not to worry about it too much. She said there is calcium in plenty of other foods, for example, strawberries.

He gets it with his cereal every morning (mini wheats, so it absorbs the milk) and I make a few smoothies a week with him. Almond milk + almond butter + spinach + strawberries tastes like a pbj! We also do coconut yogurt a few times a week.

I don't even bother offering it in a cup anymore. We just do water. I asked if we should have him on a calcium supplement and both his ped GI and his pediatrician said not to bother.

@travellingbee: Okay, good to know! Now that it's summer, he gets out in the sun a lot, but I'll probably need to do a vitamin for the winter!

I'm lucky if I get 6 oz of milk in L per day. I asked the doctor and she wasn't concerned except about vit D so she said make sure he's getting it elsewhere and getting outside time in the sun.

@birdofafeather: I think she's worried about both calcium and fat, but she knew that most alternative milks have a decent amount of calcium, which is why she mentioned the fats!

@Adira: yeah, we started out only offering water with meals because i didn't want her to fill up on milk. milk was separate along the same lines as our nursing routine. as we cut nursing sessions, i gave her a straw cup of almond milk. it definitely took a while, but she's upped her intake since we first started. now i offer her water throughout the day and with meals and milk with snack or after her nap. i just want her to be drinking something, whether water or milk because those are the only drinks she gets.

is it fat or calcium or what that your ped wants X to get with the hemp milk? i would focus on getting him those things through food more then! maybe mix the types of milk too? i had to play around until i feel like she got used to the taste of it! and she definitely likes silk almond milk more than other brands.

Oh, I should probably add, he still eats a lot of purees, so he's probably getting plenty of water from that. Perhaps once he's eating more finger foods, he'll just naturally increase how much he drinks?

@Anagram: Well, Xander's been on hemp milk for almost 4 months now and he seems to like it just fine - he just doesn't ever drink a lot! Ever since we switched from bottles to cups, he doesn't drink as much (and we started off with BM in cups, so the taste was the same.

He's been eating well for breakfast and lunch - just dinner has been a struggle lately. And his weight was great at his last appointment a month ago!

@Adira: I haven't fully made the switch--I'm at 2 oz hemp milk and 4 oz breast milk, 4 times a day still. But I'm hoping to switch her slowly enough so that she doesn't notice the taste difference. And soon, we'll be dropping down to 3 bottles/sippies of "milk" a day.

I know some moms have trouble with the WCM transition and the LOs only drink about 12 oz a day at first until they suddenly catch on--hopefully it will be the same with Xander and hemp milk soon?

How's his eating and weight these days? Still good?

@catlady: Ahh, yes, I want to keep him on the hemp milk because it seems to have the most fat than other milks, which is what my pediatrician was concerned with when looking at alternative milks. Thanks though!

@birdofafeather: When should I offer water vs. milk? Currently I offer milk with all milks and in between because he just doesn't drink a lot at a time. And whenever the daycare gives him water with his snack instead of milk, he ends up drinking 4-5 oz less of milk than normal!

smoothies for sure! and i would definitely be offering water though because i want to make sure he's not dehydrated. DD knows when she wants water and when she wants (almond) milk.

@Adira: I wasn't sure if you were looking for alternatives for the hemp milk. I was more thinking he might prefer another type and drink more of it. Is the hemp milk alot better than other milk types? I think you're probably right, if you want to keep him on the hemp milk, it's probably better not to try other types. In that case, maybe try giving it to him in a variety of ways, like applesandbananas suggested. Good luck!

@Applesandbananas: I haven't tried smoothies, but maybe I should! And putting things in a pouch is a great idea - he's really good at pouches usually! I'll have to look into the reusable ones!

@sorrycharlie: I WISH cheese was an option for us, but Xander has hated all the fake ones I've tried so far. Booo! I feel like cheese would be such a great alternative! I'll have to just ask the pediatrician for advice at our next appointment if things don't improve!

@catlady: @sorrycharlie: I'm nervous about offering other drinks because I'm afraid he would just drink even LESS milk in that case. We currently ONLY offer milk (we don't even offer water) and he only drinks 12 oz if we're lucky. Or do you guys think that maybe if he really liked a fortified other drink, he would end up drinking more??

Almond milk is delicious! Have you tried smoothies? I bet almond milk/yogurt with some fruit would be delicious!

Or milk-sicles! I used to do this with breast milk when my LO was teething.

Could you change the yogurt feeding vehicle to be a pouch instead of spoon and bowl? I've seen some reusable pouches talked about on HB!

What about dipping fruit in the almond yogurt?

Olivia just hates milk. her doctor said not to sweat it, to just make sure she gets her flintstones and said cheese/yogurt. I would just ask dr for tips and how much calcium they want him to have, and try to figure it out that way? maybe fortified drinks?

I think we will probably be in the same boat soon since my LO's MSPI is so bad. We drink coconut and rice milk here since I am off nuts in addition to dairy. You can also get orange juice that has been fortified with calcium and vit D. Maybe Xander would like one of those?
