@erwoo: My doc was kind of odd about the two week thing. I told her that I read it takes a few weeks to leave your system and she looked at me like I was crazy and said it shouldn't take that long :bummed: We already had her 4 mo. appt. set for two weeks out so she does want me to keep eliminating and we're going to revisit then. She also said I didn't need to eliminate soy (but I am). I'm a bit disappointed that she didn't seem to know as much about it as I thought.

So far the diet actually isn't that bad, I just miss cheese and the processed snacks and some baked goods. I'm finding a lot of substitutes and recipes for baking that I want to try. I also found a bunch of SoDelicious products and they're pretty delicious!

Sounds like it. The green and goopy poop and for sure the blood is a huge indication. My oldest had dairy and soy even if he tested negative to both (skin prick and blood test). Food elimination did it and he outgrew at 15 months which is when I introduced whole milk. He now has environmental allergies plus dog and dust mites. It's not severe but he does need a dose of Claritin here and there for symptoms. I believe his environmental is hereditary. If anyone in either side has allergies your child(ren) will most likely have them as well. The dairy is different, I think, but doesn't hurt to have the knowledge so you don't get surprised if he has other allergies later. I learned the hard way. :)

Oh, and both the ped and allergist told me that it does take two weeks for it to clear your system which is why they told you to go back two weeks later. Hang in there... it's tough and can be a slow process to diagnose officially but once it's under control it's not terribly hard to live without dairy and soy. Most restaurants are good about it if you ask them to customize your food. I did eat at home a lot for breakfast and lunch though. Also, just as another piece of information, if you decide to stop nursing, find out if your insurance will cover hypoallergenic formula. I had United Healthcare at the time with my oldest and they did cover it, but the whole process took 2-3 months with the back and forth and with getting confirmation from my son's ped and allergist. I've heard some insurance won't, but doesn't hurt to find out. Just plan a few months in advance so you don't have to pay any out of pocket for formula.

@LovelyPlum: Glad to hear that your LO is doing better with the changes! It must be a relief to know that is definitely what's causing it (as sad as it is to say by to dairy!). I startd a Pinterest board and found a few decent websites so far. The thread is a great idea!

The appointment went ok, but I was kind of disappointed. Her doctor wants me to continue to cut dairy (and I'm doing soy electively) for the full two weeks, but I think she's waiting to see results before she fully diagnoses it. I've been off everything for four days now and I think I see some improvement, but I'm trying not to count my eggs too soon and I'm hoping it gets even better!

@fussygal: how did the appointment go? Sorry I didn't come back to this post earlier, G has been sort of a nightmare of late. It turns out that when I try to sneak in dairy, it goes downhill *quickly* and she becomes a screaming, spitting mess. I think we are finally getting out from under my sneaks over the 4th. She's only had a bit of green poop, but she gets a super stuffy nose and projectile spits stomach acid when I eat it. She also screams her head off for hours and won't nap.

I hear you on the cheese! I haven't cut carbs, just read ingredients. I think I may start a thread for meal ideas, because there are a few of us newly in this boat! Feel better, N!

@fussygal: Good luck! After the soy oil experience, I've been to scared to test the waters, lol. I'm going to ask her pedi at her 6 month appointment about reintroducing soy and/or dairy to my diet. I have a feeling that I'll need to stick with this diet until she weans. If you have any questions about what to use to substitute for things, recipes, or allergy friendly restaurants, just wall me! I'll be happy to help. I've learned a lot in this MSPI process.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: poor thing! :( ok, I'll definitely avoid that too and maybe slowly introduce "hidden" stuff once her system is clear.

@fussygal: it depends on the child I think. I've avoided all soy products just in case. I accidentally had French fries once that were fried in vegetable (it contains soy oil) and DD's poo was green for 2 weeks and she was pooping all day long and in the night and would wake up because of poop. Ugh.

@gilmoregirl: good idea, I'll bring in the diaper

@MrsF: so frustrating that they didn't take you serious at first! I feel bad that it's taken us this long 14 weeks) to notice - poor DD :(

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I read somewhere that certain soy ingredients are ok - soy lecithin and refined soy bean oil are usually ok. Did you cut those out at first, too? I probably will just to be safe I guess!

@LovelyPlum: oh no! :( hope she's feeling better. Maybe we can swap meal ideas because this carb and cheese lover is coming up short!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: makes a good point about soy! I forgot to say that dairy and soy are often cross-reactive so you really have to cut out all soy too to tell what is going on.

This definitely sounds like MSPI to me. My LO wasn't diagnosed until she started having visible blood in her stool, but there is often hidden blood. She had been put on Zantac which didn't help and the doc wasn't worried about dairy intolerance unless I was drinking a lot of milk. Obviously this is crazy because even a little hidden dairy in your processed food counts. She didn't take us seriously until after the blood was obvious. I was FF by that point, so we switched her to Nutramigen and it was like a miracle.

I would ask them to test your LO's stool for blood even if it doesn't look bloody. If you don't feel like your ped is up to date on this, or you just want more help, I would ask for a referral to a pediatric GI doc. This was very helpful for us as they deal with this stuff (and reflux) all the time. It turned out my LO did have reflux along with MSPI and the pedi GI switched her to Prilosec after Zantac didn't work. It was much better for her.

Good luck and I hope you and baby have some relief soon!

@fussygal: It really sounds spot on for a dairy intolerance. My doctor found out at 2 weeks old because she pooped while we were there and she did the fecal blood test right then. It took about 10 min. My doctor said to cut out dairy and soy since they often go hand in hand and it takes 2 weeks to clear their system. I would definitely ask them to test her poop today if they can.

Dairy intolerance can cause spit up and gas too, so I'm not sure you would need the zantac because it might all be caused by the intolerance.

From everything I've been dealing with the past few days, it definitely sounds like dairy could be an issue. If you have a diaper with suspected blood you could bring it and ask them to test for blood in the stool. My son's doctor has us do three poop samples at home (stool cards) and they tested positive for blood.

I was unhappy with the pediatrician's advice (it was not my regular doc but another from the same practice) so I called an LC and the things she discussed with me were basically all of the things you are listing (wakeups, congestion, green mucous poops with blood, eczema/rash).

I posted a bit about this earlier this week, but with some recent developments, I have a few more questions. :) Quick overview:

For the past 6 weeks we've thought LO had reflux and her doc put her on Zantac. She's been getting worse (TONS of night wake ups where she sounds in pain, same amount of spit up, grunting, etc.). When I called about it on Monday her doc told me to cut dairy before we upped the Zantac dosage and to see if that helped. I don't drink cows milk (bothers MY tummy) but I still eat yogurt and cheeses, which I cut out Monday. Then yesterday I realized that I was still getting dairy through Caseins and whey in processed foods. So really we've only been dairy free for 24 hours, not to mention it takes up to a few WEEKS for it to leave your system completely.

Anyway, today she's had really mucousy poops that are almost green, and her last one even had a teensy bit of blood. Also, she's had a stuffy nose for the past three weeks - all major signs of dairy intolerance. We have an appointment today to check her weight for a Zantac dosage increase (although I don't know if reflux meds are needed anymore?) and i want to make sure I find out as much as possible about the dairy stuff by asking the right questions. So, two questions:

Does this sound like your dairy intolerance experience and what should I ask the doc?
