@Mrs D: OMG...that's terrible! We used to go there almost every Tuesday night, because they used to have half priced drinks at the bar. Sad!!

@Anagram: so after we had dinner at Smoke (which had no view as far as I could tell) we went over to the Belmont...we found the bar but were like "um wheres the view"? So we asked about the rooftop bar...the front desk guy said there was never a rooftop bar - but that the bar with a view was right there (the main bar) and unfortunately the view has been obstructed by new apartment builds"...BOO

@Mrs D: you hit some of my favorite places in Dallas! When you say Smoke doesn't have a view because of Apartments (omg!), is that just Smoke or also the hotel rooftop bar?

So, I thought it would be good to Recap where I went on our trip and my reviews!

Hotel: We stayed at Hotel Crescent Court - very nice, I recommend it. Centrally located.

Day Trip: We did go down to Waco - to satisfy our Fixer Upper addiction. It took nearly 2 hours to get down but was SO worth it. The Silos were busy (we went on a Friday morning around 10am) but manageable. We ate at the food trucks (there were 8-10 on hand with a variety of food types) - everything was GREAT. The bakery had a long line so we decided to shop then head to the Dr Pepper museum and Spice Village shops. The prices in the Magnolia shop were quite reasonable - $26/shirt, $12/tea towl. The household items were also reasonably priced but the women who worked there suggested that shopping online would result in cheaper shipping rates. Dr Pepper museum was a bit pricey so we just visited the soda fountain and had literally the most amazing Dr Pepper float on the planet. Seriously amazing. Spice village was great too - basically Etsy...in person. We all found things we loved. After that we hit the Magnolia Bakery on the way to the car - as a baker I was neutral about the cupcakes...they were fine but nothing exceptional. Well made for sure - just not like knock your pants off. The cookies and cinnamon roll were exceptionally good. The staff at Magnolia were everywhere, lending a helping hand (taking pictures for you, offering advice, answering questions).

Bishop Arts - we hit C Senor and El Si Hay taquiera for street tacos. Both were incredible. I dont think I could pick a favorite but I think I'd fly back to Texas to eat at them. :) We then visited Bishop Cider Co - really nice, great tasting Cider. Then we wandered down to emporium pies and Dude Sweet, Chocolate. The pies were great. I bought $45 in chocolate after sampling nearly everything. Super friendly staff in both.

Restaurants:
Smoke - we went here our first night and had the family style. It may literally be the best Bacon I have ever had. Nice place, I bit slow for how good the reviews are - which was kind of nice. Good drinks. The rooftop bar is no longer...apartments have been built in front of it and no more view!

Meseros - Knox/Henderson: This place was great. Great food, great drinks, great ambiance. Everyone was super happy with our meal here. Super reasonably priced.

Stampede 66: Really good food and drinks, decent prices, but the wait staff was less than mediocre. It didnt ruin our experience but paled in comparison to Mesero's the night before.

We also hit up Deep Ellum brew co...it was nice and fun but we were disappointed to find no flights on Saturdays. So we had to choose just one beer each...defeated the purpose of a beer tasting in my mind...

I think thats it...I really appreciate all the insights ladies. We had a great girls weekend!

Go to Uchi!!! Oh my gosh, so freaking good. It has a lot of sushi, but has lots of other stuff, too. Even my friend that hates sushi and is super picky loved it. It's a little bit pricey, but totally worth it in my opinion.

@smocks: I second HG Sply!

Others have mentioned some of my favorites, but:
Bishop Arts: Tillman's is good, but the best part is ordering s'mores for dessert. They bring it all to your table for you to roast and assemble and the marshmallows are homemade. It's sooo good.
I also love Eno's (pizza) and Lucia in the Bishop Arts.

Cane Rosso is awesome pizza, too. (in Deep Ellum area).

Smoke has a great brunch.

The Truck Yard is fun.

@Mrs D: All the other ladies have good suggestions. The only thing I would add that I haven't seen yet is happy hour at Wolfgang Puck's 560. I used to go 1x monthly with friends and would also take all my out of town visitors there. It's the big, iconic rotating ball in the Dallas Skyline. You can Uber there or pay to park in the lot and I think I remember that the hostesses validate parking passes.

Anyway. you don't need a reservation for Happy Hour in the bar---just tell the hosts down at the elevator that you are going up to the bar and try to arrive early, like as soon as they open at 4:30 or 5. Then you have a pick of the bar/lounge area seats and you can be right by the window. Also, they have nice cocktails (not sure if they still have it, but they used to have a jalapeno prickly pear margarita that was amazing), and all of their appetizers in the bar are $5.60 during happy hour. Such a great way to get an amazing view of the city and the pork belly bao buns are so good. https://wolfgangpuck.com/dining/five-sixty-by-wolfgang-puck-dallas/

Depending on how foodie you want to get, I could recommend some other fine dining destinations for dinner.

The Rustic, as PPs mention is a great hangout for at night. I miss those types of Dallas places that don't exist where I live now in NJ--the last time I was there, I was pregnant and threw up in the bathroom, haha. All day morning sickness. The Rustic isn't far from Bar Belmont, which as PPs have mentioned is a relaxed rooftop bar at Belmont Hotel. Smoke is on the property but does not have a rooftop view that I remember. But last time I was there was in 2015, so maybe I'm not remembering.

Dallas is also known for boozy brunches, so I can recommend some options there if you want it.

@Mrs D: stay at the Belmont! eat at Smoke! and just down the street is a outdoor place called Chicken Scratch that has picnic seating, delicious food and music sometimes. Also across the street from the Belmont is a cluster of stores and restaurants--I highly recommend Taco Deli for authentic breakfast tacos in your way down to Waco. I feel like this combination fulfills your desire for a side of funky and as a 30-something myself these are the foodie hangs that I enjoy without too much drunk frat-ness. Truck yard is awesome but can be insanely packed and if you do stay at the Belmont Chicken Scratch has the exact same vibe but is .25 miles away. Have so much fun! welcome to Dallas!

Edit: sorry, I misread where you are staying! Not the Belmont! I still recommend dinner at smoke and drinks at Chicken Scratch (it is also called The Foundry--the attached bar).

@MrsLonghorn: We were actually up around Southlake a bunch (potentially moving to that area next year) so that's where we went to Central Market, but my friend who lives in North Dallas said there were a few locations. We also went to Mi Cocina - delicious!! I'll have to refer to this thread again if/when we move :)

@Anagram: That is so cool they catered your wedding, their food is awesome! It was the first place we went when we got off the plane. DH had the mole, yum. I just had tacos but they were awesome, and their salsa at the beginning of the meal was amazing. Legit margs too.

@smocks: ahhh...Meso Maya catered one night of our wedding. It was SO GOOD and the chef was just the best. I used to live in Dallas and really wanted our food to be a nod to my culture as a Texan. Which is Mexican food, obvi, haha.

I can't remember everything we had, but we had mole enchiladas and traditional Mexican wedding rice, among a bunch of other things.

@smocks has a good list!

White Rock Lake and Katy Trail are great if the weather isn't too hot. The Dallas Arboretum is also wonderful. They have a cafe on-site, but you are also allowed to bring your own food/drinks (including alcohol!) and have a picnic. Stop by Scardello's to pick up a picnic basket to-go, with wine, cheese and crackers or sandwiches....or grab snacks and prepared food at Central Market. I assume the one at Lovers/Greenville is the one @smocks is talking about, and it will be on your way to the Arboretum from the hotel.

If its too hot and you want to be indoors (or if you just want to shop!) go to Northpark Mall. It is a big square with a large courtyard in the middle. La Duni is awesome for lunch or coffee/dessert, and you can sit out on the courtyard patio. This sounds weird, but the mall has a great art collection - so you can walk the square and its like combining a museum and shopping in one. http://www.northparkcenter.com/pages/northpark-art-collection

Other indoor activities would be the Dallas Museum of Art and the indoor/outdoor Nasher Sculpture Center next door.
DMA has an incredible Mexcio exhibit now, and Nasher has Richard Serra prints until the end of the month.

Pecan Lodge will likely have a LONG line, and because of that I have never been, but it gets rave reviews.

Personally, I would skip Mockingbird Station (@smocks you didn't miss anything!) I would have recommended that years ago, but at this point it is mostly chain stores and restaurants (West Elm, Urban Outfitters, Ann Taylor LOFT, Starbucks...)

Javier's is mexico-city mexican food (not tex mex). It has been around since I was a kid and I love it for special occasions or date nights. Not casual though, and I'd suggest a reservation. Meso Maya is good and more casual. And for truly super-casual tex mex, our family likes Mi Cocina. It's a family-friendly neighborhood place, nothing fancy, with multiple locations around town. They're known for their Mamo Taxis (frozen sangria/margarita swirl).

DH and I are out-of-towners but just got back from Dallas a couple weeks ago and left the kids at grandma's! We had a great time at:

-HG Sply Co (great food that I didn't expect to like, awesome beer selection, cool vibe)
-Truck Yard was cool but make sure you go when they're actually playing music. We were a little early so it might get more exciting later on (I think we were out of there by 9pm) but there wasn't even any background music on, it was a little odd.
-Mexican/margaritas - go to Meso Maya. It's not tex mex, more authentic, and freakin delicious.
-Had a nice time walking around White Rock Lake
-Jogging down the Katy Trail around Highland Park
-Had a tasty breakfast at All Good Cafe in Deep Ellum, definitely funky/kitschy
-We didn't make it there but Pecan Lodge was highly recommended for BBQ by some of the people we met up with there. We also were told to go to Hutchins BBQ but the locals didn't love that one as much. Plus the one we tried to go to (in McKinney) was closed for renos, and our schedule didn't allow us to get to the one in Frisco I think. Prob not worth the drive from where you are staying.
-Also heard that Mockingbird Station was fun to walk around/window shop, but we didn't make it over there either.

ETA - OH! and the highlight of my trip was walking through Central Market. It's a grocery store, but it seriously blew my mind. I want to live inside that store.

You are spot on with Bishop Arts! casual with a side of funky is the perfect description of that area!! I'll think of some more places today....

There is a surprisingly large number of local breweries around here. I would recommend checking out Meddlesome Moth for a meal - good food and tons of beers!

@MrsLonghorn: Thank you for some great recommendations. I saw that pie place and was like "I can go for any reason to eat a random piece of pie...". :)

I'd say we're looking for casuals/relaxed environment with a side of funky. If that makes sense. There are 4 of us...two are slightly more foodie than the others. We all like beer. I would not say we're about fancy nightlife.

We picked Dallas for several reasons: easy airport since we are coming from all over, warmth that time of year, reasonable prices and the Waco appeal since we are all fixer upper fans! :)

ETA: We're basically 4 moms looking to relax, unwind, chat, eat yummy food, drink yummy adult beverages and be blissfully commitment free for 3 days! ;)

@Mrs D: I haven't been at that time of day, but yes, supposedly Smoke in the Belmont at sunset is awesome.

What kind of thing are you looking for? Casual, dressy, laid-back, indoor/outdoor,. great tex/mex food??

The neighborhoods that have been recommended are great ideas. I would especially recommend the following restaurants:

Bishop Arts
- Lucia
- Hatties (fancy brunch or dinner)
- Oddfellows (casual brunch)
- Boulevardier
- Emporium Pies (you have to get a slice here!!)
- Dude Sweet Chocolates, stop in for samples and pick up stuff to bring back home

Trinity Groves
- Casa Rubia
- Off-Site Kitchen (for a casual, messy, burger)

Stampede 66 is "modern Texas cuisine" by Stephen Pyles. He calls the restaurant his "Love Letter to Texas". Though it sounds super kitschy, he is an excellent chef - if you want iconic "texas" food, this is the way to do it!

@Mrs D: I haven't been to that Smoke location, but I've been to their other location in a suburb where I live for brunch. Everything my husband and I have had for brunch has been good. I'd imagine dinner would be good too.

@matador84: Thank you! Is that Smoke restaurant at the Belmont Hotel good? Could be a good dinner then drinks spot to watch the sunset!

@Mrs D: Klyde Warren Park is not far away either and they sometimes have music on the lawn or other chill events.

I forgot about Trinity Groves but I definitely recommend also!!

@lawbee11: Thanks - I saw you mention this on some other threads and basically drooled over the pictures on their site!!!

@matador84: Thanks for the tip on the Arts District...someone else in my network recommended Tillmans so I'm happy to hear a second review! I'm looking up Routh St now!

@Boopers: Thanks for your input! I'm going to check out Trinity Grove now too!

I also found the Dallas Truck Yard - hoping its as cool as it looks! We're just a couple of moms away for the weekend - not looking to get crazy so some nice chill southern atmosphere with good food and drink is perfect!

@lawbee11: Babe's is delicious! It's a casual, family style southern type of restaurant that serves fried chicken, chicken fried steak and some other similar dishes. We've taken out of town guests there before and they were happy.

@matador84: I second Bishop Arts for walking around and exploring an artsy, hip neighborhood in Dallas.

I'd also recommend the Trinity Groves area for dining. Lots of restaurants all clustered together with a really cool vibe. I'd say now through the middle to end of May is prime patio dining weather so I would try to find at least one restaurant you can enjoy outside!
