Finally (3 hours later) my mil admitted the pills were hers. Supposedly the pill was in her pocket from a year ago and must have fallen on the floor. The story still sounds fishy to me. Either she’s lying about medication she takes regularly (which is totally possible) or I just don’t know. Thanks for listening. She was upset but I just can’t believe this happened twice with my inlaws!

Sorry but I think I would find a replacement babysitter. Carelessness with pills is one of a long list of reasons why I won't allow my MIL to babysit.

Just giving the benefit of the doubt to the grandparents,

but does the pill fall to the floor as they are taking the medicine and they don't realize it?

or is it like in their purse and does LO rummage through and pull things out causing it to fall on the floor? (when LO2 was 19 months he would just pull everything out of my purse including my breathmints. Not the same thing, but he somehow got it open and ate all of it  )

If its in their bags and tending to fall out, I would also make sure all bags are up on a higher surface too.

That is so scary! My husband takes meds 4 times a day. We keep everything in a kitchen cabinet and the pills for the week in his pill sorter. He knows from constant reminders that if any pill falls on the floor he needs to tell me ASAP. He’s not alone with DS for more than an hour once in a while, so I feel comfortable with our arrangement.

As DS gets older I’m trying to teach him about medicine and that we don’t touch daddy’s pills. When he sees me sorting the meds in the kitchen he tries to grab and I kick him out of the room.

I saw an acquaintance who was letting her grand baby play with and shake her prescription pill bottles once and that just seems like such a bad idea.

We’ve had this problem too. My mom now has dementia but as she was declining, it was hard to know her limits until there was an incident. (She never was responsible for the kids but would visit us for extended stays). So, I found pills on the floor twice. I then took all medicine from her when she would enter the house and I would physically place the pills in her mouth.

@Mrs. Champagne: Ironically we are planning to retire the grandparents from their duties come the summer. With our oldest starting K in the fall, the financial burden is lessening. Plus we’ve had five years of weekly sleepovers. We’re done! Lol.

Oh man! Do they need to take meds during the day while there? Maybe a system to keep them up high.

I'd be totally freaked and would probably stop grandparent care for a couple weeks if I could swing it. Let everyone take a breather - see if they can re evaluate and if they are up for the challenge. Hard talk to have, but they accidentally put your kids lives in great danger.

@Alba4: Same situation happened with my parents and my sister required that she keep all meds in a locked cabinet. It's just too risky!

We have had 2 dangerous situations in the last month happen with our parents. My mom watches my DS2 (19 months) one day a week and my ILs watch both boys (DS2 is 4) one day a week.

A few weeks ago my husband found a rogue pill on the floor of our living room. Turned out to be FIL’s blood pressure med. We were obviously upset by his carelessness and talked with both sets of parents and discussed storage safety, etc.

Tonight my husband found ANOThER pill on the floor next to toys in the living room! WTF? My husband texted a pic to my mom. She said it wasn’t hers. My ILs deny it is theirs. My husband researched what it is online and it is for a condition my mom has. Double WTF?!?! Why would my mom deny it?

Has anyone been in this situation? This is extremely serious in my opinion. I feel like our parents can’t handle this simple responsibility.
