@ladybee: Your best option is to use the hydroquinone prescribed by your Derm. And always always wear sunscreen (because sun exposure will make it worse). There are mild lasers that will work too, but for in-home topical treatment, hydroquinone is your best bet.

I experienced melasma with my first pregnancy (DD is now 2.5) after really one lunch sitting outside. I was furious because it was very noticeable and I'm very self conscious. Of course everyone tells you it will fade after baby is born. Then after you're done BF. Both my linea Negra and one spot on my face faded. But the spots on my upper lip has never fully faded and actually got worse when on vacation. So I've started wearing sunscreen every day and use mineral sunscreen. Apparently, chemical sunscreen can make it worse. I also went to the derm and she recommended a product that didn't really have an impact for me. I discontinued using it when I started to TTC. So I may try again once done with BF with LO2. I also religiously wear a hat if I will be out in the sun.

@ladybee I didn't even realize myself how dark it was until I noticed it in a picture, and then started getting comments (like, "what's on your face?" type questions). So embarrassing.

@Mamaof2: I am only a month PP but even if they fade, I know they will still make me insecure. My answer to that is tanning so I need to find something to help me avoid it!

@ottilie: That's crazy! I didn't notice how horrible the one was until I saw a picture of me with DS2 when he was born.

@Ginabean3: I'll have to look into that. I've always loved Devita skincare and they have something for $40 I might try.

@hellobeeboston: I am not BF. My doctor called in HYDROQUINONE 4 % CREAM.

@ladybee: are you breastfeeding? I believe a good retinol product should help them fade, but I don't think it's safe to use BFing.

what did your doctor call in out of curiosity?

I got the dark spots on my face during my second pregnancy and after a couple months they faded considerably. I never used any kind of product other than slathering on sunscreen daily because I guess sun exposure makes it worse?

My dr did tell me about Le Roche-Posay Mela-D pigment cream which is supposed to work well...about $25 I think? I just never got around to buying and trying it.

I have one normally fairly light spot on my face under my eye that is got so dark with my pregnancy that when I went to the hospital to give birth, the nurses made my husband leave and then started questioning me about how I got my black eye. :meh: I was so confused at first until I realized what they meant.

I don't have any products I used to help, but I'm hoping someone might have a suggestion because I'm trying to get pregnant again and who knows what will happen this time if it gets even darker.

@ladybee: how far PP are you? Mine faded on their own - it took awhile though - maybe 6 months? And you need to stay out of the sun!

I gained dark spots with both of my pregnancies also, but haven't tried anything to lighten them since cosmetics aren't deemed medically necessary/not covered by insurance. I didn't want to pay $$$. So I'm curious/interested to see what others have tried OTC that worked for them.

With my first pregnancy, my light dark spots on my face darkened. They bothered me, but it wasn't horrible. With my second pregnancy, they darkened ALOT plus I got a couple more light ones. Now they are driving me crazy.

Any product recommendations? I talked to my dermatologist about it and she called in something but it's $140 because my insurance won't cover it.

Money is kinda tight so I'd like to keep my spending under $50.
