@ChiCalGoBee: Yeah, I'll definitely have to ask when I actually see a doctor. The secretary just wouldn't book a u/s for me. I know they'll use the doppler at my May 15 (9 weeks) appointment to try to hear the heartbeat, but last pregnancy I had an anterior placenta, so we couldn't hear anything. Not sure if they have a handheld ultrasound thing or not, but I'm guessing not, haha.

@Adira: hope it's okay that I'm jumping in here late. I had so few symptoms before my first appointment (which wasn't supposed to be until 8 weeks by they saw me at about 7.5), and they said originally that I wouldn't get an u/s. However, once I told my doc how high anxiety I was about everything, the first thing he did was use the little handheld ultrasound thing (not transvaginal, and not the typical machine-it was something I'd never seen before and super cool!) and he found baby and HB within seconds. It took no time and no cost (I believe...we didn't get pics but took one with our cell phone), and the piece of mind it gave me was priceless. Anxiety is no joke, especially during pregnancy. You're the patient-ask for what you need!

@spaniellove: Oh wow! That's crazy! I THINK that my OB will change the due date if the u/s shows more than a week's difference, but I know if it's just off a few days, they don't.

@Adira: I'm sorry they turned you down! FWIW, I knew from monitoring that my ovulation date didn't correspond with my LMP and my RE noted that, and every u/s showed that baby was days off and then weeks but the OB and MFM insisted on going by LMP and nothing else. So they really don't care.

@swedishfish: Wow! For me, they did a cervical check, then did an u/s, and then gave me a rhogam shot (because I'm RH-negative). I believe they did the u/s not to check on the baby but to see if they could determine the source of the bleeding.

@swedishfish: Wow, that's crazy! I had spotting with my first pregnancy and they wanted to see me right away!

@BakerBee: @T.H.O.U.: No, I understand that. But just knowing that there's a healthy heartbeat in there would reduce my anxiety about the chance of miscarrying (and obviously every week I make it into the pregnancy would FURTHER reduce it). I'd just like to know as soon as possible if things are looking good or not, you know?

@Adira: Just an FYI, even with seeing the HB it your risk factor also depends on the number of weeks along you are. So seeing a HB at 5 weeks, only lowers your risk to maybe 15% or so but seeing a HB at 9-12 weeks gets you down to that less than 5% chance range (I'm making those figures up but its something like that).

@Adira: I don't really feel like that logic is right. I know that when you see a heartbeat, your odds go down, but it's not like those that have scans at 12 weeks (which is fairly common, some don't even see until 20 weeks) are walking around with a 20% chance, while someone who had an early scan at 6 weeks and saw a heartbeat has a 5% chance just because they saw the heartbeat. My doctor said that the risk decreases as the pregnancy progresses.

@littlek: I should just do that, haha

@wonderstruck: Our u/s are done through radiology, which is a different department than the OB/GYN & Midwives, so it would have to be scheduled separately.

And while I agree, having a u/s and seeing a healthy heartbeat doesn't guarantee anything, statistically speaking, it would mean my chance of having a miscarriage is down to 5% (whereas right now, not knowing anything, I think it's still around 20%).

@winniebee: I'd imagine it depends on the place, but around here many of those places won't do an ultrasound until you're further into your pregnancy and have proof that you are already under the care of a doctor.

I don't think it's a big deal - when my midwife asked about my LMP I told her when it was, but explained that I had long cycles, and told her what date I ovulated on and when I expected my ovulation date to be. She did a super brief dating ultrasound right there and found out I was exactly right.

And not to be a downer, but getting a dating ultrasound doesn't magically mean you're not going to miscarry. If I had miscarried at 9 weeks, my 8 week ultrasound where I saw the heartbeat wouldn't have meant a thing. I know that's hard, but this is not something you have control over! Save yourself the stress, stop over-thinking it, and just tell the midwife you'd like a dating ultrasound soon due to your long cycles.

It's a slippery slope. If you get one now and you know all is well you will then start worrying about all of the miscarriages that occur between 8-12 weeks. Just try to trust your body.

If you really want one just say you are really worried and anxious and want one. Basically that's what I said last time (post miscarriage) and got one.
