@ValentineMommy: @brownepiano: I came back to this thread to share it with someone else who posted about poop holding - it definitely sorted itself out! She pooped in her pull up for the first week or two and then just kind of started pooping on the potty one day! It wasn't super consistent but I would say after about 3 weeks or so she was exclusively pooping on the potty. She's great about it now, 6 months later!

We've been potty training our 22 month old for 3 weeks and he's having a hard time with the poop too. He'll start in his underwear and then make it to the bathroom to finish. Ugh. But for pee, I thought he was holding it longer but actually I think it is just his normal peeing now that we stopped pushing liquids all the time. We give him granola for breakfast every day and don't have problems with constipation. If we catch him pooping we sit him on the toilet and read books to get him to stay longer and finish. He also didn't get the difference between peeing and pooping muscles at first so if we told him to pee sometimes it yielded better results that telling him to poop. I don't know if any of this will help but I wanted to commiserate that figuring out pooping is hard!

@daniellemybelle: Reviving this thread. Any improvements?

DS is just about to turn 3 and pees on the potty fine. He's really scared of pooping on the potty though so I'm coming in to see if your LO's poop withholding resolved itself?

@photojane: Thanks for your advice! Honestly, as long as she is not making herself constipated I am not too worried about it right now. The concern was with her holding it for days but hopefully we are past that.

And for the OCPT folks, the author says that "many, many kids resolve this on their own": http://www.jamieglowacki.com/potty-training-q-a-pooping-in-napnight-diaper/ I am going to give it a while!

@daniellemybelle: I felt the same way, that if she would just poop in the potty she would get it and everything would click. That didn't happen. She would poop in the toilet occasionally, but it was scary for her for a while. She wasn't scared of the potty, but pooping in it made her very uncomfortable. It's a big change! From what I've read, this seems to be pretty normal. I think the most important thing you can do is not pressure her... or yourself! It will happen. Since she's getting better at peeing in the potty, she definitely understands the concept of using the toilet. It will just take her some time to be comfortable. It's not easy, but try to follow her lead. My advice is to offer up the potty, ask her occasionally if she feels like she needs to poop, but don't push it. She'll get more comfortable over time. I'd let her poop in her pull up for as long as she needs until she's ready to be done with it. I tried pushing Sadie into it too, because I just wanted it all to be done at the same time, but as you know... toddlers do what they want to do!

@daniellemybelle: I am pretty sure the book says don't let them flush it if they go in pull ups. What incentive does it give her to go on the potty? Flushing is the fun part for them.

@catomd00: Interesting - I have heard from so many people that their LO pee trained first!

She's definitely not afraid of the toilet. She loves everything about it. In fact, I joked to DH that we should have her birthday party in a public restroom because it is her new favorite place! :silly:

She has watched The Poop Song on YouTube a million times and when she poops in her pull-up, we flush it and she likes to see it, sing the song, etc. I haven't been negative about it - I say, "Oh, your belly must feel better now! Let's go put your poo poo in the potty since that's where all poop goes, right?" And she's totally enthusiastic. The only negativity I've seen from her is seeming kind of concerned about pooping on Sophia the First who is on her pull-up, ha.

The only thing she's said is, "Poo poo hurts." She's just 23 months so she's not great at answering "Why" questions.

She's never been constipated before, but I'm guessing the first day she held it from the usual hesitance toward something new and also just not wanting to stop what she was doing since pooping takes a while. And then her stool got harder and more difficult to pass... so now it's a cycle. :(

I feel like if she could just get it in the potty once she'd "get it" and we could get over the hump. But honestly as long as she's regular I'm not too worried about it. She pooped in her nap time pull up again today and it was a softer stool so that was reassuring.

According to AHA parenting, "Usually bowel training is easiest to control and happens first. If your child has mastered peeing in the toilet but not bowel training, he is probably afraid of the toilet and needs some reassurance. Or, he is used to the feeling of squatting and needs more support under his feet so he can push."

Can she verbaliZe why she won't go poop in the toilet?

@Mrs. Tiger: That's a good idea! Apparently pear nectar is pear puree (or pearsauce) thinned out with water and pear juice. And in the case of conventional brands, HFCS, ha.

@Mrs. Tiger: Thank you for the encouragement!

LO pooped in her nap time pull-up again yesterday. So basically since she's been potty trained she is pooping every other day during her nap. I wouldn't be too worried about this if she wasn't constantly telling me that she needs to poop, that "poo poo hurts," and visibly holding it. Oh, and her poop is super hard and dark. :/

The pediatrician recommended Miralax but I feel like that is a pretty drastic step if she is still going every other day...?

I'm trying everything I can to get her poop softer and help her go. The pediatrician also suggested pear nectar so we got that and mixed it with water, but the second ingredient is HFCS  I mentioned that to the nurse and she said, "Yeah, the sugar agitates the bowels." And her behavior, haha! Apparently there are organic brands with no added sugar though, so I am going to try to find that... Anything to get her pooping regularly again!

@Mrs Green Grass: @daniellemybelle: poo took K a month longer than pee, and he was three! The book "where's the poop" helped a lot. What it finally took was me plopping him on the potty mid-poop (in his undies) and half went in the potty before he knew what was happening. After that he seemed to get it and was much less resistant.

I know it doesn't seem like it right now but you'll get there!

@Smurfette: So I read the poop chapter of OCPT again and the playdoh thing was more for kids who aren't holding it, to show them when they should say they need to go. I will try it with her though.

@Mrs. Lion: I don't know either :( it's not like I am harping on her or pressuring her. But when she tells me "poo poo on the potty" I try to help her.

I feel like not mentioning the potty at all is counterproductive to her pee training? I backed off the prompts somewhat yesterday and she did fine but she's not to the point of 100% self initiation yet.

I downloaded the Bees' ebook about constipation and I am going to call the pediatrician today. I'm also trying to remind myself it's only been 3 days.

@daniellemybelle: Maybe you could just let go of the poop thing altogether and tell her not to worry about it? Does she choose to sit on the potty for a long time? Maybe she is tensing up because she is feeling anxiety about it and pretending it's not an issue will help her relax. It sounds like she isn't able to just poop on command yet, so trying to get her to do it on the potty might be counterproductive? I don't know...potty training is so hard :(

Could you spend a whole day at home with nothing on below the waist again and not mention the potty at all (but keep a little one in the room with you so she sees it throughout her day) and just see what she does?

An update on our poop saga: LO didn't poop today at all, not even in her nap pull-up. She talked about it CONSTANTLY, including dozens of "Uhoh! Poo poo on the potty!" and we would run to the potty but she wouldn't go.

After her nap, I had her sit on her little potty in front of Daniel Tiger (and queued up the potty episode) eating prunes and drinking juice for about an hour. Several times it seemed like it was about to happen. I tried giving her space. I tried talking her through it. Nothing. A few times she said, "Ow, ow, ow, poo poo." :(

A bummer is that I feel like all the fuss surrounding poop has made her more resistant to peeing on the potty. We just had the one pee accident early this morning but toward the end of the day she had to be convinced to try to go pee. Bleh.

@Mrs. Lion: That's a good idea. I really want pull-ups to be reserved for sleep but maybe that can be a last ditch effort.

@photojane: That's good to know that we will get there! I just hate that she is holding it. :(

@daniellemybelle: 23 months is young! That's when we starting PTing with Sadie (she turned 2 in February, PT'd in January). Honestly, there is such a big cognitive difference between a 2 year old and a 2.5 year old, that giving her a little time on the poop front made a HUGE difference. I know it sounds crazy since it's only a few months difference, but she understood so much better this summer than when we first started. She was much better at vocalizing her needs/feelings too.

@daniellemybelle: I don't know how old your lo is exactly but mine was already over 2.5 because we had put PT off due to other stuff going on (moving, etc) so she definitely understood and asked for pull ups for poop or pooped in her undies a few times. Then one day it was just ok. We did rewards but not sure it helped transitioning with poop. That tends to be her pattern though- massive push back, crying, etc, then suddenly a-ok. Wish I had a better suggestion for you. :/ Sounds like she will come around soon though!

@daniellemybelle: Did you read the poop chapter in the book? There was something about using playdoh to get them to understand how you have to push it out. Sounds like she knows when she needs to go but isn't connecting the pushing out on the potty and thinks she needs the comfort of the pull up

It took about a week to start pooping on the potty regularly. The first couple days she held it. The next couple days she would go in her pull-up at night. Then she finally went in the potty. It definitely helps when they are self motivated! My daughter wanted to poop in the potty but she just had to get over that initial fear of it. So she kept trying on her own accord and eventually got it. It took about another week for her to feel completely comfortable with it. I would just keep encouraging her to try to poop in the potty. Dd liked the princess potty book and that def helped! Eta yes agree w pp. watching you poop helps too! Dd wanted to be like momma so she kept trying!

@daniellemybelle: I know it's not ideal, but let her watch you. Let her stand in the bathroom while you're pooping so that she sees that it's not a big deal, and it's what "big girls do." Sometimes we would "push" with her. In the beginning when the potty freaked her out, and she was confused by it, I would sit on the floor in front of the toilet and hold her hand, and explain pushing to her. I would pretend to push and make a "pushing" face, and ask her to push with me. It sounds so ridiculous and gross, but it actually helped!

So, today, LO has said, "Poo poo on the potty," or "I want to poo poo," 10+ times. Bless her heart. Pee is going great even with loose shorts commando. At one point she started trying to climb up on her dresser where the pull-ups are and said, "I need 'Fia to poo poo." Meaning she wants to poop in a Sophia the First pull-up. We just kept trying the potty and I could tell she wants to but just has no clue how to even get started, poor thing. I don't know how to help her! She's napping now in a pull-up and I kind of hope she poops just so she isn't constipated but I also would love to get her to go in the potty mostly because SHE wants to!

@Mrs Green Grass: Oh yikes, haha! We went for a walk today and I kept looking for logs on the sidewalk. This is who we are now, I guess. Hang in there!

@travelgirl1: Good point! Hoping we get there soon!

@NovBaby1112: She has been watching the Poop Song on YouTube but maybe we should get a poop book, too. Gah, all this poop talk...!

@photojane: How did you get to the first poop in the potty though? I think that's what we are struggling with - even getting there.

@oliviaoblivia: That's great! I hope so too.

@plantains: That's rough! The withholding is really stressful! Better in a pull-up than constipated, I think.

@daniellemybelle: she pretty much just asks for a pull up around 7.30 evey evening and then stands in a corner to poop in it. If we don't let her she withholds for days and becomes horribly constipated.

DD held her poop for naps the first two days. Then pooped in her little potty while I was putting the baby to nap on the third day and then never looked back.
She did tend to hold it a little more than she would have with diapers but within a week she was back to get regular schedule.

Hopefully it works out the same for you.

@daniellemybelle: she was pee trained in January. That only took her a day or two. She wasn't pooping in the potty regularly until May, and exclusively until July. She is only 2.5, so I didn't feel any pressure to hurry her. She decided to get rid of the pull ups without being forced out of them. And I will say, life was easier with the pull ups, because having to "poop" quickly became a bedtime stalling technique haha

The first few days of potty training LO didn't poop much at a all- maybe just a tiny amount in the potty. Then she started having accidents in her pull-ups at school from holding it too long and then really needing to go, and I also think she was scared to go on the potty to go poop. We got some little gum balls for her and told her that they were if she went poop in the potty and we also got a book on poop, everyone poops. She's doing really well now, probably going every day at least once on the potty, so I really think it just takes some time for them to learn.

@daniellemybelle: yeah, the holding is stressful, but at the same time, when they hold it they are learning to use their muscles so they don't just poop anywhere. We have had several poops on the floor too  But OMG when they finally go over to the potty and poop in it, it's like the heavens open! :silly:
