@Jenn23: they were great quality, but, I don't remember the actual "grade" they gave. I remember having 4 great quality embryos (transferred 2) and 3 additional good quality. The remaining 5 were frozen.

@Sunshine1810: Nope, totally out of your hands now. Besides the deciding how many to transfer, just try to relax, breathe, take it day by day and keep busy. It really will start to fly by once you get going with the injections, then the frequent ultrasounds and blood draws. Before you know it, transfer time! :)

@Jenn23: I never asked! And they never gave me a grade? But they said both were good quality. Also, all the rest were able to get frozen, so it's all at least decent quality, I'm assuming. Looking at the pics they gave me, they both looked pretty good. I never asked how they determine three or five days. Or if I did, I don't remember the answer. All I know is they took the two best looking ones. I guess they were able to determine by day three?

@tequiero21: @LMOG47: How was the quality for both embryos? Just curious! I'll be doing a Day 3 and transferring two next month. Just wondering if both of the embryos were high quality or not since I've been doing research the last few days on likelihood of twins with Day 3 vs. Day 5. :)

Yep, if the quality is really good, you probably would only increase your likelihood of twins, vs. having one. BUT, as you said, if it doesn't work, then you may regret not transferring two. That's the way we looked at it. We'd rather have two, then none. But since you have insurance, you could do it again rather quickly. Our is all out of pocket and super expensive so we were willing to take much more risk to get pregnant!

Thank you for all of the information ladies. It really helps hearing your stories.

@Jenn23: I am REALLY hesitant just doing 1. I went into this with the mindset that we were going to transfer two and I am comfortable having twins. I understand the risks, but I would rather transfer two and increase my odds. My doctor said that given my age and depending on the embryo quality, I would have just as good of a chance transferring 1 if the quality is great. I don't know, I'm really struggling with it. I also wonder if part of it is that I have insurance coverage so she knows that we can try again if we need to. I would rather avoid going through a failed cycle if I can though obviously!

Just wanted to add that since you mentioned on the IVF thread you are considering transferring one, then I think day 5 would be better since they can determine the best one better at that point. Just my two cents! :)

My RE does both and we had expected a day 3 last time, but since I had 8 all still progressing (8 fertilized out of 13 total) we pushed to Day 5 and transferred the best 2. I have read many studies that show pretty equal success with both. If you have at least a few really great quality embryos, I think it is often best to go for Day 5.

With my new IVF cycle next month, I have to do a Day 3 for the clinical study, so no choice this time. But we can pull out of the study and go for Day 5 if we decide to.

I read studies that supported both, but I wasn't good about bookmarking them to link for you.

We did a day 5 transfer, just because that's pretty standard at my RE's office. However, the best ones on day 3 were still the best ones on day 5. Our two poorest quality embryos on day 3 didn't make it to day 5. That anecdotal evidence makes me think that our cycle would have been just as successful had we done a day 3 transfer.

My RE does both day 3 and day 5 transfers. It just depends on how many embryos you have and how they're developing. I had a day 5 transfer. But my friend had a day 3 (on her 3rd IVF) and we both got :bfp: s.

Ditto what @raintreebee: said. I'm more inclined to go with a day 5 transfer. Granted, I am by no means a doctor or an expert, and have done relatively little studying on this vs. what I'm sure a doctor does. They want the best success rates, so they're going to do what they feel is best.

Hhmm. I think the thinking is that with today's technology, the embryos can grow equally well to day 5 as in the womb. The advantage then for a day 5 transfer is that you can see which embryos have the genetic juice to make it that far. I would think you would have to transfer more day 3 embryos to achieve the success rates of a day 5 transfer.

Yeah she said she wasn't completely opposed to a day 5 transfer, but she liked to have more to freeze in case we needed them. She said if things looked go we could go with day 5, but that she has had equal success with both. It just caught me off guard.

My NYC based clinic only does day 5 transfers now because of the increased success rates coupled with decreased multiple rates. But you have to have a top quality lab to grow the embryos to day 5.

I had my mock transfer and an appointment to sign consents with my RE today. We had a lengthy conversation about day 3 transfer vs. day 5 transfer. My doctor said there were some studies that showed a greater level of success with a day 5 transfer, but she said there were things that were not taken into account in that study and that the levels of success between day 3 and 5 were the same. She prefers a day 3 transfer for various reasons.

This was surprising to me as I have read a lot about day 5 transfers and that looked ideal to me if your embryos could make it that far. Has anyone else heard anything similar from their doctors?
