You never know if this provider will be successful getting your child to sleep. My son started daycare a year ago and needed a pacifier and his sleepsack to fall asleep. Now, he naps at daycare without it. They were patient and basically, he does everything they ask of him.

@grizz: good to know. I'll talk to her and see what she says.

@78h2o: We moved a few months ago and I had to scramble for a place with an opening. The place she's currently at was open but expecting a legacy baby (current kid's baby brother) March 1st. There's just been an infant explosion in my area and nobody has openings.

My daughter's center based daycare doesn't have a written nap policy, but they do expect toddlers in the 12m+ room to stay on their cots during nap time and either nap or rest. I have no idea how they get my LO to do it, but they send photos/videos and I've seen it with my own eyes. Sometimes they behave differently in a group. Maybe she could play quietly in a pack n play if she won't sleep? I do think its good for LOs to have some rest time/break from stimulation.

Why is your LO losing her spot? That stinks!

Thanks, you're all making me feel better about it. I think the language of the contract is written for all ages. I guess I assumed since she only has 1s and 2s now that it was written for that age group but maybe that's not always been the case. I'll talk to her. It can't be worse than the conversations I've already had with her (please close your creepy public Facebook page & are any of the men in your home sex offenders? Are you on the lookout for that?). Ugh I am not excited about this daycare option.

@LindsayInNY: yeah, that would be my first thought because there is no way you can force a little one to lay quietly! otherwise @Corduroy: would be doing that by now!

The in home daycare I took DS to had a nap time or quiet time everyday. It was from 12:30 - 2:30 but it didn't really apply to the babies. They worked with him and eventually got him on the same nap schedule as the other kids. I would absolutely ask her about it and let her know your child isn't a great napper.

I'm wondering if her contract is simply standard language regardless of the age? My MIL runs a daycare and requires all kids to nap or lay down for a certain time but that's not exactly enforceable for a 12 month old the same way it is for a 4 year old.

I would talk to the provider. Are there older children there? I don't know how you could even force a 12 month old to be quiet during "nap" time even if you wanted to?

As a follow up, what are the consequences for not napping or being quiet? Does she have punishment for them? Do you get kicked out?

Also, why force the nap? Is it because she needs the break? Or does she feel its value for all kids?

I would absolutely talk to her upfront - and know exactly what she is going to do when your LO doesn't nap or fights it. Inconsistency will just be worse, I'm afraid!

I would talk to the provider and ask what they would do with a baby who is resistant to naps and see what she says. I think in our daycare's family handbook it has some similar language.

LO loses her spot at her current daycare at the end of the month. I've looked for a new place for 4 months and have only found one in my city with the hours I need (7:30 - 5:30, I'm not being very picky).

So we decided to enroll in the only option. Its a small one woman in home day care. She is watching three other kids. I read her contract and it has all the standard stuff plus some extra. So I'm pretty sure she wrote it herself and it's not just a form she found online.

I was fine until I got to the part that said "all children will be required to lay down quietly during nap time. I will not force a child to nap but they must rest quietly." Well, crap. My 12 month old is not going to do that. We're working on nap training with her current day care and it ain't working. On good days she goes down for 30 min in a swing. I gave them a new nap routine to try along with a pacifier this week and they laughed at me at pick up. "She will NOT be contained with a pacifier," they said.

What's a mama to do? Do I ask the new day care about the policy and be forthcoming that I have (essentially) a non-napper or do I enroll her and hope for the best? Do you think that part of the contract really means anything?
