I agree with others that he needs to be able to get out of bed on his own.

When my kids were 1st put in a big bed I told them that if they needed something to come in my room and get me - do you think your DS would do that? That way when he wakes up and has to pee he can come get you, you can help him go and then put his diaper back on and back in bed.

Sounds so stressful. I feel for you, mama! I'm with Mr. Bee about a toddler bed. If you still have a pack n play you can always use that for time outs or just train him to stay in a boring corner for time outs. Being able to get out of bed to pee seems key while potty training. My oldest still calls me in the middle of the night (he's 5 now) for when he has to pee. He just wants me there and does everything himself. I think he washes his hands more thoroughly in the middle of the night than during the day time! But I remember having to help him with pulling his pants down and getting on the toilet and putting his pants back up and then help him wash his hands. Now he wants to do it himself which is great. I think once they feel like they are good on their own they will do it on their own. I never tried to press it and just went with it. You can always offer an incentive (like a healthy treat) to help him keep his diaper on overnight. I'm going to start potty training my youngest and although he has already peed in his potty I'm dreading it. He's a tough kid to begin with so I can just imagine potty training him... Hang in there! Hopefully this phase will go away soon and you'll all get more rest at night.

@irene: As for walking down the hall to the bathroom at night, in our new apartment, my son's bedroom is right next to the bathroom. In the last month he now gets up, turns on all the lights, goes to the toilet and then turns the lights off and goes back to bed, so it can be done! He does have a nightlight though, so that when he first wakes up, it isn't completely dark.

Thank you everyone....

First off, last night was hell and I really wish it was a one off thing. After he took off his diaper and peed in his crib at 9pm, HE WOKE AT 5:30AM demanding to go to pee pee. As I got freaked out that he would take off his diaper and pee everywhere, I jumped out of bed and took him to potty. He peed. But note his diaper is already wet overnight, I don't know how this boy has so much pee in him. Then he demanded to sleep on a mat on the floor. I let him. 10 minutes later he wanted his dolls (from the bed). I got him the dolls. 2 minutes later he wanted to poop. I was going crazy at that moment but he really seemed to need to go so I put him on. He pooped and he laid back down on the mat. At that point he demanded an underwear so I gave him underwear. 5 minutes later he wanted his grey train. I lost it at that moment and said that's enough! No more requests! Then he quieted down, and my alarm clock went off. AHHHHH!!!!

I really hope that is a one off incident. Please pray for me.

@T-Mom: I guess I have to consider taking out one side of the crib railings. I am just scared he won't stay in bed! Sometimes when he goes crazy I do put him in the crib for time out and he would want to get out and promise to behave (and he usually does). I wouldn't have that "cage" anymore lol :-(

@mrbee: @lamariniere: his room is carpeted!!! :-( Besides he won't pee in a small potty. His toilet is not too far away from his room so theoretically he can get to it, but I just don't trust him that he would put his diaper /pull up back on and go back to bed. Besides sometimes his diaper is already wet. :-(

@looch: @Bao: Yes I can put some steps/stool in front of the toilet and teach him to get up and down.... but I am afraid he would trip and fall in the middle of the night with no lights on. Then again I don't think he could get out of bed --> walk to bathroom --> take off pants --> go up to toilet --> pee in toilet --> get down from toilet (flush optional, hand washing probably impossible) --> put at least his pull up back on and he may need a new pull up --> go back to bed smoothly. Like somewhere in the middle I am sure he'd either tripped, made a mess, and would need help.

@Bluebonnet: So nice you have a video monitor!!! I wish I had that now. What I wish is a walkie talkie so I could buzz in and ask what's wrong instead of running up and down the stairs, haha!

I would suggest switching to the toddler bed. I think if he is potty trained he should be able to get out and go. I know you said you aren't sure if he would get up on his own and go but give it a try, kids can surprise you sometimes!

If you got really brave you could just put a plastic potty in the corner of his crib.

Just joking. Take the rail off and give him a potty either in his room or adjust the toilet.

We're in a similar situation. DD is 29 months, and we started potty training her Labor Day weekend.

Now that she is potty trained (day time and practically nap trained). She hates diapers and will take them off in bed too, I think its good that she doesn't like her diapers - that means she's more aware of when she needs to go to the bathroom and she wants to use the potty not a diaper.

DD sleeps in a "big girl bed" and we have a Baby Bjorn potty on the floor of her room. I watch her more closely on the video monitor. If the diaper comes off, I put her on the potty, then put her back to bed (diaper on). I tell her the diaper is "just in case" she doesn't wake up when she needs to go potty. Because that is exactly what it is - when she goes to the bathroom in her sleep (versus when she's in bed and hasn't fallen asleep yet, or in bed, but we haven't gotten her out of bed yet), or when she wakes up in the middle of the night and needs to go.

She hasn't attempted to use the potty in her room by herself - yet, but she has yelled for us over the baby monitor when she is in bed and needs to go to the bathroom. So a few nights, she's actually been accident free (because she alerted us at 10, she used the potty, and didn't need to go again until morning).

No advice (we're mid process, so I'm not qualified to give advice), but sympathy. Potty training is EXHAUSTING.

If your son is using the regular toilet, have you made it accessible to him? We have the Little Looster step up around the base of the toilet, with an integrated ring that's always "down" so he can get up and down himself. My son had no interest in the little portable potty things, so we used the regular toilet right from the beginning and it was the best thing we did.

As for peeing in the crib, I have no suggestions, other than a waterproof mattress pad. Maybe he's ready to move to a toddler bed, though.

@mrbee: I was going to make the same suggestion.

My son transitioned to a twin about 3 months after he was potty trained (she he was about 33 months). Going on the suggestion of a family member, we put the potty in his room in case he needed to go at night. I was totally dubious that it would work, but it did! Occasionally, he would wake up, get out of bed, pee on his own and manage to get back into bed with no problems. Once or twice he missed (but we have hardwood, so no biggie), but overall, it has been much more successful than what I would have imagined.

A toddler bed sounds like a good option... you could leave a potty right in his room, so he could go right there if he needed to.

We're worried this is going to start happening for us soon too. (DD is daytime trained, and seems to sometimes wake and want to use the potty in the night.) We're considering making the switch to a toddler bed pretty soon for this reason. We're not quite ready for that transition, b/c we're in the middle of another big transition (we just took away her binkies for good). But in another month or so I think the toddler bed will be making an appearance.

No good advice because my LO went through a naked phase for a few months. She took off her clothes, pjs and diapers during naps and night sleep and slept in the buff under her AA blanket. :-(

She now tolerates a diaper (cloth or Target disposable) at night and usually wakes up dry. She hates it when we call it a diaper and refers to it as a nighttime cover!

I haven't had this direct situation but LO did go through a phase of waking up early and taking off her diaper. Our solution was to put a cloth diaper cover over the disposable diaper (we used cloth during the day so we had these on hand) and it stopped her from taking the diaper off.

Maybe it would be helpful to talk with LO about how it takes longer to learn to pee in the potty at night and he can still be a big boy in undies during the day and wear a diaper at night? We still do a diaper at night at 33 months and LO seems fine with it, but every kid is different.

We havent been trough this but my DS has been trained since May and he still has nighttime/early morning accidents at least once a week in his underwear. I think it may be just a developmental thing. Your DS is still very new to this. He knows what the right thing to do is, but maybe he's panicking. I wonder if his knowing he can't get out of the crib himself is exacerbating that. Also my DS has accidents here and there where he just cannot make it to the potty in time. He will literally go right in front of it. That just tells you how much of a learning experience it is for them (and potentially for quite a while). I would give it some more time and try to be patient. make sure he goes pee immediately before bedtime, etc.. And maybe consider letting down one side of the crib?

Hi it's me again.

DS is 2 years 8 months old, 2 weeks ago he started wearing underwear full-time during daytime, except for naps and bedtime. He is usually clean and dry except for a few accidents here and there. He has very rarely woken up with a dry diaper before so I still put him in an overnight diaper at bedtime.

I am not quite sure what has gotten into him these days, but 4 nights in a row now, 2 hours pass bedtime (around 9pm), he would start saying he needs to use the potty. I went to his room, and he would have taken his pants AND diaper off. A few times I did not get to him as quickly as I should, he would have peed in his crib and cried. I explained to him over and over again that he can't just take his diaper off and pee on his crib, but he is not taking that "suggestion".

I am not gutsy enough to put him in underwear at night because he still wakes up with a soaking wet diaper every morning. In the morning, if he woke up earlier than I did, he would have no problem peeing and/or pooping in his diaper. So I really do not understand this! I guess I should watch him like a hawk around 9pm until another breakthrough comes along? :-(

More information: He is still in the crib with all railings on so he can't get out on his own. He is using the big potty so I always have to help him up. Even if somehow we took down one side of the crib and he can access the potty on his own, I don't think he would put his pants+pull ups on to go back to sleep.

Anyone went through this stage? Any suggestions? If not, this is just another vent from yours truly. :-( I really shouldn't complain. Many people were still in diapers full-time at this age but every new turn has been frustrating.
