@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: the funding we get is only because he works as a civilian on a military base. I don't know if they have any other programs that would work for you guys; maybe he could ask coworkers?

This is the program we are getting a subsidy from (MCCYN): http://www.naccrra.org/military-families/army/what-programs-are-available

At one daycare we looked at they propped up the babies so they could "feed themselves." I did not like it. The daycare we go to, they hold the babies when they feed them. LO is now taking a sippy cup, so he feeds himself now. I would definitely say something if I were you!

@BlueWolverine: Wow, 10:2?! My LO just turned 6 mo last week (as did the other baby I saw feeding herself), so maybe our state has a law like that too, I don't know. Sounds like you knew your LO best... hopefully they calmed down after that?!

In TX, it's state law that they have hold babies who are younger than six months, so LO gets held. The other babies in her room who are older are often propped up with a bottle. I'm not a huge fan, but at least LO gets until six months. And a 6:2 ratio is awesome. In TX, the state standard is 10:2. I found a day care that's 8:2 and felt lucky.

I too have issues with communication sometimes. They ALWAYS want me to bring more milk. LO is getting 3-4 4oz bottles every day and it's all I can do to pump that. One week, I finally buckled and brought more and LO only drank 4oz. I'm over that little request.

@mediagirl: Would you say something to the staff or to the director? I just turned in a new feeding plan this morning that the director needs to sign, so I could easily talk to either party about it... I don't want to make it a big deal, but I just don't want it happening often (if it's just in a pinch, okay...).

@scg00387: @Cara M. 17: @MamaMoose: thanks!!! I definitely see them holding/cradling babies to feed them as well, but I know J can hold her own bottle and I wouldn't be surprised if they are doing the same thing with her now (at least some of the time).

@Amelieisme: It's just hard to know when we're not there. I hear ya. I onsidered talking to the director re: their comments about her needing "real food" and asking for rice cereal in her bottle, but I just ignored it because I didn't want them to be upset with me and somehow take it out on her.
@highwire: seriously! It's hard to say something though!
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I'm not 100% happy with the daycare, but overall I think they are ok. We get funding via my husband's work for the federal government and they require we go to a center with the state's highest level of certification... so it's highly accredited and the staff generally seem pretty warm towards her. I would leave if I didn't think they were caring. :)

I decided not to take my lo to a daycare center I had put a deposit down at because I saw the teachers "teaching" the kids how to hold their own bottles and propping the kids up. At the daycare we chose, they held the baby and the bottle until they quit bottles.

I would say something, that would bother me a LOT.

Any time I have shown up while M was eating she is snuggled in someone's arms in a rocking chair. They don't hold her super upright but she's in the same position she would be if I were nursing her so I'm OK with that. There are 12 hours between my nursing sessions (6:30 am and then not again until 6:30 pm). We apart for less time than that but that's how long she is not nursing... and in that time day care gives her three 5 ounce bottles so she gets 1.25 ounces per hour. We feed her solids at night but still no solids at day care. They did have me up the ounces from 12 per day about a month ago but it seems like they were spot on and she really was ready for more food, so I don't believe they over feed her.

In your situation I would ABSOLUTELY raise your concerns. I recently had to have an awkward conversation with our director about some issues with communication. But I flat out told her "listen, I'm the type of person who usually avoids confrontation, but when it comes to the care of my child I can't keep my mouth shut if there is something I'm uncomfortable about". You should never feel bad about making sure J is being given the care she deserves (and not to mention that you are paying for!).

Yeah, that would annoy me. I think my LO has probably been overfed all along, but it became a compromise between me and daycare because they kept asking for more and I really thought he should be getting less. Alas, I spoke to the director of the daycare about it so they would at least stop harassing me to give him bigger bottles.

My daycare does the same thing - they treat it like she's "advanced" because she can hold her bottle and be left on her own to drink it. I'm not a huge fan. I haven't said anything yet, because I feel bad. They are trying to celebrate her being advanced and I feel like I am saying "No, don't let her do that" is like inhibiting her or something. I should probably say something as well. You know how much trouble we have with breastfeeding so that little habit probably doesn't help!

Today I am technically off from work, but I have some things I need to get done, so I took LO to daycare for a few hours today. Since I had the time, I hung out there for awhile to talk to them about her schedule, feeding, etc.

While I was there, I noticed a baby that is the same age as my LO being given a bottle to feed herself. Her head may have initially been resting on a boppy, but when I saw her she was laying flat on her back with a stuffed animal under the bottle to help prop it up. She did look like she was holding the bottle on her own, but still...

I don't want my LO fed that way. I understand that there are only 2 of them and 6 babies, but I want her to drink her bottle sitting up and with assistance/pacing.

I'm headed back there in a bit and think I will bring that kellymom bottle feeding the breastfed baby article and staple it to her feeding plan.

It's going to require that I put on my big girl pants though - I hate confrontation, even if I try to say it as nicely as possible, I still feel bad.

I do think though that the way they feed her contributes to her eating more than the rec 1-1.5oz of bm per hour away from mom (some days she eats 2+oz per hr). They seem to believe that she's underfed though, even though she's 99th percentile for height and 74th for weight. Ugh!

Anyway, would you say something about how they are giving bottles? Or should I let it go? How does your daycare do it?
