@mediagirl: I see what you mean! Well DD is definitely not going to make lasting friendships here because we are likely moving across the country next year, but obviously this doesn't impact how we socialize ourselves and her. The point of sending her to daycare at 2 years old was to develop those socialization skills. These are the years they learn how to interact with peers and make friends. Whether or not these are her lifetime bff's is definitely not a concern.

@NYCaliMama: we live in an area that is very spread out. When our child goes to daycare, it will be near our work, we think. That is 40 minutes from home. If they went near home, we have the option of three different elementary schools near us. I really don't think our kid will see daycare kids again because of this. I also don't think you make lasting friendships at 3 or 4 years old.

It costs about $14 for one parent to be admitted to the kids museum by my parents home. I would gladly spend $15 on a gift for a friend for something to do with my kid on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

yes we go to DD's preschool friends' birthday parties! they are a ton of fun for her and it's how we got to know and socialize with her friends' parents. Gifts for kids these days are pretty affordable, so it's not like we spend a ton on a gift... Something like $15-20 or so. They provide food, entertainment and a goodie bag too so it's nice to bring something for the birthday girl/boy. DD has been in daycare/preschool for over a year now with mostly the same classmates, so not sure what you mean by them not seeing each other again... We all live in the same neighborhood too so besides school we see her classmates at the park and at other events all the time.

@Andrea-That's my issue too. It seems like parents want to show off when the kids don't even care.
One of my daughters classmates had his birthday party at the Marriott. It was a pool party a few weeks ago. That's not bad.
What was bad was the fancy food that none of the kids ate. I mean, I don't know too many kids who are excited about stuff mushrooms and bruchetta. It wasn't like she got food for both the kids and adults. No, the kids were expected to eat all of these finger foods and only three kids really ate anything.
Another thing was the entertainment. She had an actual DJ with a lighting system. The only good part that came out of that was me getting his business card for our wedding. lol

When I was growing up, little girls in my class had sleepovers and the boys mostly had pizza parties at Chuck E Cheese or Pizza Hut or at the bowling alley.

Same thing with later in life. No one is my school had a huge Sweet 16 celebration. I mean, not like on TV where it's basically the same amount as a freaking wedding.
I have no problem attending these parties and enjoying the over the top crap that kids won't remember or care about, but I hope parents don't expect me to go all out.

This is an interesting question. It seems like everyone around me invites the entire class once they reach the preschool age. It makes me a bit worried about what we are "expected" to do once my daughter reaches that age. The amount of money everyone is spending on parties is a little over the top. I don't think many parents did this when we were growing up?

He's in preschool and where he goes actually discourages inviting children to parties at school. He has one friend that he sees outside of school and that's the only party he goes to.

I didn't go to any of them until this year. She's not in daycare anymore though. She's in preschool. So these are most likely the children she will be going to school with for the next decade +.
I'm still best friends with my preschool friend. She's my MOH.
Usually I just get them a card with a gift card to a toy store or something. That way mom and dad can go pick what they want. Some parents are really picky about what toys they want in the house.

If your child goes to daycare, does he/she get invited to birthday parties for the other kids in that daycare? Do you go and do you buy presents for those kids?

It seems so young to me to be going to lots and lots of birthday parties of kids they may never see again (once they start going to school). What are your thoughts on this?
