We don't make her change her daycare clothes when she gets home but she loves getting into her pjs so that usually happens. We do make her wash her hands before she does anything else.

Nope, I figured the germs are already "in" them so their clothes are the least of my worries. We wash hands before dinner and then go straight to bath after and put on PJs (our home clothes I guess.) but I'm not going to dirty an outfit just for them to wear at dinner to then change into PJs an hour later. I do enough laundry! ha

We literally come home from daycare, I cook dinner, we eat then go to bath and put on PJs and then play. So it's a pretty tight night time schedule.

@MrsLonghorn: I have a slip cover on our main sofa, it's saved us a bunch in terms of spills, but once, I happened to be home when my housecleaner was fluffing the pillows and the amount of dust that flew around made me glad that I had a cover on it and could just wash it.

I am kind of nuts about outside clothes versus inside clothes. I've sat on public transportation a lot in my life and seen a ton of things, and people are gross. Kids included.

I make my 4 year old wash his hands. He changes if he is really dirty. It's more to protect his younger sister from any extra germs. It started when she was itty bitty and has continued as a habit.

Either way, sounds like you found a good solution!

@looch @sweetiepie - very interesting, I hadn't thought of it that way at all!! My mind was only thinking about what he puts in his mouth, and in our house that is definitely his hands. He is still in a crib, so bed isn't an issue here, but my sofa definitely is.

@wrkbrk: haha...yup......I did officially give up on it.....but no that we are eating solids (table foods and the babies are super messy) I get home nurse them in their daycare onesie with no pants post diaper change.....then they play for a little bit and hop into their high chairs in only their diaper.

So they are in their daycare clothes nursing and just a little bit playtime.....I decided that was worth my sanity!!

@meadow: So funny that you posted this! I thought the exact same thing when DS started daycare at 9 months old. I assumed it would be better for him (less illness?) to have clean clothes. It lasted about 2 weeks.

No, but DD usually undresses as soon as she gets home. We do have a rule about not wearing daycare clothes in bed, not even just sitting or lounging. But on the couch is fine.

@MrsLonghorn: I don't know about your child, but the first thing my son wants to do is run into the house and flop onto his bed. The thought of him having been at school all day, and then getting into bed....There are a lot of soft surfaces in my house that I can't wash easily.

No because I'm lazy (talking preschool not daycare, same idea though) BUT I actually have heard that during cold and flu season it is good to change clothes and bathe as soon as they get home. Forget where I read it but it was an expert opinion, not a random parent I know.
So it might not be common but I don't think he's wrong.

nope. If he's been exposed to germs all day, I can't imagine how 1 extra hour before bath is going to make a difference. (we usually get home around 5:45 and bath is 6:45).

However, if I were worried about germs, I would wash his hands. I think that would be more effective than changing clothes.

Yes, absolutely! Her clothes come home with stains of that day's food and play, so they normally need to be changed anyway. We wash her hands before she leaves school. Come home, change clothes, and a bath every night before bed.

@ALV91711: ever since I became an adult and had a full time job this is me. PJ pants as soon as I get home!!!! Yay!!!!

Dumb followup question. If you wash hands & face upon getting home with an infant....is that with a wipe or at the sink with soap & water? I picture the second being a huge mess with hungry wiggly babies....haha.

Nope. I get them home, feed them (maybe give them a bath) and put them in PJs and then bedtime.

The one thing my MIL related to laundry is she saves their PJs after they wear them. I'm not sure why she does this. Maybe she thinks it's still clean and can be reused. I always put them in the hamper to be washed.

When DD was that age, she went to bed at 6:30 and we generally didn't get home until 5:30/5:45 so we did change her...but it was more part of the bedtime routine than strictly because of daycare. As she's gotten older, no, we don't put on new clothes between getting home and bedtime -- but she generally strips her socks and pants off within 10 seconds of walking through the door anyway.

Everyone changes into house clothes when they come home from being out all day (at work, school, daycare, etc). This is just the way it has always been in my family. You come home and the first thing you do is change clothes and wash your hands.

Like @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: said, they've already been exposed by being at daycare for 8ish hours a day, so I don't think changing clothes makes a big difference.

That being said, when my baby was under 6 months I changed my clothes and washed my hands when I got home from school or the store(s). I'm a teacher and these kids are germy!

@Corduroy: The reason why I do it is to minimize the amount of germs that are brought into my house. I take my shoes off before I go upstairs so I don't track dirt in, I don't get into my bed wearing street clothes because I've sat on public transportation, etc. I follow the same logic with my kid ,who has been in close quarters with kids all day, hugging each other, rubbing snotty noses on sleeves, etc.

I don't know what good it's really done because my son's been home sick the last two days anyway, but I feel it's better than doing nothing.

No, the kids are dirty and probably covered in germs but they're the same germs they were around all day. If there are disease causing germs on my kids clothes I'm sure they already have them on their hands/face/eyes and in their bodies. I don't think anyone is getting sick from a dirty shirt. But my kids get sick a lot so maybe I'm wrong.
