@Mamaof2: they don't allow the babies to feed themselves at school. He does finger foods at home and that seems to keep him more satisfied.

@MrsTal: he is only on purees? You might want to try Cheerios - it will help him work on his pincher grasp and it will take a LONG time for him to eat. I would do bottle, then cheerios for breakfast and then a bottle and purees and cheerios for lunch. then a 3rd bottle only.

@Happygal: He's getting purees at school, he is feeding himself a bit at home (they won't allow him to feed himself at school), usually breakfast. I do think he is much better about feeling full when he feeds himself and I think he also can see how much is left on his tray and know he is almost done. I would be okay with formula if it was necessary but I'm just not sure if it is. They haven't said how long he cries, I should ask at pick up tonight.

@JennyPenny: That's helpful to think that way. I will have to try rationalizing it.

@Mamaof2: Currently he has 3, 4 oz bottles and then he has about 2 oz of food after two bottles. The third bottle is usually given by DH at home and then he does about a jar of food or a serving of cereal.

@MrsTal: Is he getting purees or feeding himself bits of food yet? I think they're better at regulating food amounts when they're feeding themselves. How do you feel about him receiving some formula to supplement at this point? Does he cry for awhile? Some babies seem to have a hard time with transitions. Maybe it's not hunger that is making him cry--they could say, "Last bite!" to let him know it's over....throwing out lots of questions and maybes for you! I'm sorry--that sounds stressful and a middle of the night pump session definitely isn't a good time.

Both of my kids usually took three 5 oz bottles during a full day of daycare (one every 3 hours).

I would ask them how quickly your LO is finishing the bottle. If it's within 5-10 minutes, he may not be recognizing that he's full yet! Maybe find some information on paced feeding for them to try to feed him more slowly? You could also have them offer solids first and then the bottle in order to try to fill him up more.

If your daycare teachers aren't used to breastfed babies though, they may just be responding to what they know. Formula fed babies do tend to increase the amount in their bottles as they get older, so they may just be seeing the number and thinking it's not enough, when in reality, it is, because breastmilk gets fattier as babies get older.

In the past, I've just had to be firm with my daycare providers and just tell them that NO, he does not need more than 5 oz in a bottle and that I wasn't going to send more than that and that they needed to feed him slower or find other ways to soothe him.

You could also try sending a 4th bottle with just a little extra and tell them to give it to him only in an emergency. Or maybe four smaller bottles overall and let them feed him more often. But 4-5 oz in a bottle tends to be the norm for breastfed babies and your LO is old enough to have solids, so you really shouldn't have to up the amount in your bottles. They just need to figure out what works for THEM, which will be different than what works at home. But you shouldn't have to kill yourself pumping just because they are feeding him too fast or something!

Daycare feeding is stressful. <3

I had a very similar experience with my LO. He was eating way more at daycare than he did at home and if I gave him anywhere close to what they gave him at daycare, he would throw up. And yet they kept asking for more! At 9 months he was having three 9oz bottles of breast milk and 8-12oz of puree. I was pumping like crazy to keep it up.

I did talk to his teachers about how much he was eating and mentioned that he never ate that much at home on weekends and when he did he often threw up. Unfortunately, they didn't have a good explanation but they described his behaviors and they did seem consistent with him being hungry. I rationalized that maybe he's just more active at daycare and needs more nutrients? My little guy has also always been on the low end of the weight charts so I figured more calories couldn't hurt. So I just sent more and drove my boobs crazy the last few months till I could introduce cow's milk. Sorry, I don't have any better advice, but I hope knowing we were in a similar situation might help :-/

LO is 8 months old and has been in daycare for 4 months. The entire time his teachers have been constantly asking for more milk and food. When he started out I wasn't sure how much he needed as he was EBF so I was happy to oblige and send bigger bottles and I was pumping enough to be able to do it. Then he hit 6 months and they wanted bigger bottles going from 4 oz to 5 oz and I did it. Though I was sort of against it because we were starting solids too and wasn't pumping that much. Then they wanted to increase it again last month and I said no. I said I would provide more baby food instead and that seemed to work out alright.

In the last few weeks we have noticed that LO is really grouchy when he finishes eating. We thought he just needed more but when we feed him more at home he throws up. Well, since we are increasing food a bit and I was killing myself to pump 15 oz (3 pumps at work, one after bedtime and I was adding a middle of the night pump to help keep up) for his daily bottles, we dropped down to 4.5 oz and then 4 oz over the course of several weeks and he seemed fine, or so we thought. His teachers are pushing for more milk or food again and complaining that he his crying when he's done. I want to tell them no, I think he doesn't realize when he's full and then keeps eating then he throws up. However, I'm not sure how to talk to them about it. I was thinking about talking to his doctor first and seeing what they thought. Any ideas here? I'm really not sure what to do in this situation.
