DS1 was older but he broke his arm this summer and went to daycare just fine. He had a full arm cast. The staff were wonderful with him. They even did water days and were great about putting his arm cover on so that he could participate. This is at a daycare center that is pretty by the book so I was worried they would have all sort of restrictions but they were awesome.

Then he went to kindergarten and had to sit out for recess and gym class until the cast was off. :(

My DD was in a cast for four weeks and went to preK during the entire time. I did email teacher and ask her to make sure she doesn’t do anything crazy like jump off of something at playground or do cartwheels (which she was still trying to do). The only accommodations that the teacher helped was in doing certain work bc it was her main writing arm but she quickly adapted and learned how to write with her left arm. I think she also helped put jacket on and open lunch which normally teacher wouldn’t help out with.

My 2. year old is also in a cast for a fractured arm at the moment. I was told by the ortho that for her injury, the bone is so stable in this cast that had DD been 15 and playing high school football, he would have allowed her to resume playing once casted!! She’s got zero restrictions, and can even swim. I’ve made a point to tell all the providers at the gym daycare that she can do anything she wants - most of them didn’t even notice her (hot pink, over the elbow) cast!! Can you check in with your ortho for reassurance, and relay his/her message to your DCP? I’m sure they’re just nervous about DD getting hurt.

ETA: the only “accommodation” I can think of is maybe send in some sandwich bags and a rubber band to hold them over the cast (poke holes for her fingers) at meal time, or for painting/sand play, since you can’t wash her cast.

@LBarn: my son also broke his leg at 2.5 and was in a full leg cast. He had just started full day daycare a few weeks before. We cut back to half days while he was in the cast because they walked to the local playground every day and daycare offered no way to accommodate him (I WAH at the time and while it wasn’t ideal, it was manageable). When he was at daycare it was fine, he just sat/played on the floor a lot and could eventually walk around wearing the boot.

My friend's daughter broke her elbow and was in a cast for weeks at a less than stellar daycare. It wasn't an issue. I'm sure if you email "all you have to do is keep it dry" and explain how to clean her hands and if she'll need (additional) help wiping, they'll be fine.

Does anyone have experience with sending their toddler to a daycare centre with a cast?

DD (almost 3) fractured her wrist yesterday and has to wear a fibreglass cast for at least 3 weeks. She only attends daycare Thurs and Fri but when I called the supervisor to speak with her about the logistics of DD returning tomorrow, she seemed flustered and concerned that they wouldn’t be able to ensure her “safety”. The doctors at the hospital/fracture clinic really only stressed the importance of keeping the cast dry, and said otherwise we should let our DD resume most normal activities when she was ready. They didn’t see any issues with her going to daycare. Obviously she will need some extra assistance, time, and care with some tasks, but I didn’t think it would be such a big deal and/or safety concern.

The supervisor asked me to email her with important dos/don’ts, which I don’t mind doing, although I feel like it’s mostly just common sense. Am I missing something/being naive?

We’ve decided to keep her home tomorrow just to give her more time to adjust to her cast, and will then have a week to iron out logistics with things like dressing for outdoor play, keeping hands clean, etc. Are there any specific scenarios I should address in my “instructions” for the daycare for her return next week?
