I'm in a big city, not NYC, and would also recommend finding a parents facebook group or list serv. There are always childcare recommendations coming through ours. We opted to start by identifying daycares that were in a good location for us, looking at price range and then gathering info about those we thought could work.

I second the nanny share idea. That is what we did for LO's first year before we left the city and it worked great - no waiting lists or touring daycares, and lots of one on one attention. It was also no more expensive than daycare. We found our share family on a nannyshare website and meet up and interviewed nannies together. Worked great!

We sent our son to A Learning Odyssey in Astoria from 5-11 months (then we moved). I loved it there and cried on our last day! There seem to be a few good ones in the neighborhood, good luck!!!!

I have a list of daycares i'm looking at in astoria. The prices here are pretty good! I havent chosen one yet but interested to see what others have to say.

if you go to meetup.com, there are a few astoria moms groups that you can join and there will be some message boards where you can search or ask about which daycares are good. i think there are several queens moms meetups too, but those obviously would include a much larger set of moms.

I second the suggestion to join a neighborhood listserv or facebook group. We were in Brooklyn and ended up doing a nanny share instead of daycare. It ended up being the best thing ever - same cost but more flexibility, more one-on-one attention and more time outside for LO, plus we figured it all out about a month before I went back to work.

My friend is looking at Kid Krazy on 27th Street for his one year old. Google helped a lot when l started looking in my neighborhood, also see if there's an Astoria moms FB group where you can ask. Questions like that are all over my mom FB group and people are always super helpful.

I am so overwhelmed by this! Where does a person even start to look for childcare? We live in Astoria but work in the city and have zero kids with friends near by. I am 10w now, and hoping to negotiate 6 months off, but am already stressed about finding care for my LO. Any advice from big city bees who ran into similar challenges on where to begin?
