My son's infant room doesn't have any bouncers or exersaucers. Just lots of boppys and play mats. The kiddos spend a lot of time on their tummies or lounging on their backs until they can sit up.

Neither daycare my LO has gone to had any kind of baby "container." This was important to me. They had soft rugs and little mats as well as Boppy loungers for babies to lie on. If they fell asleep, they were instantly put in the crib. I think this is much safer and allows babe to explore the environment more.

There's no swing in our daycare, but I think they do have like two bouncy seats and one exersaucer and one bumbo? I think that's good, because between eight babies, they obviously can't each spend a ton of time in any of those things, but they're available if needed for a bit. So I get what you're saying. I wouldn't want a room full of them, but I do think I'd rather they have at least one or two as a temporary place for them to sit.

I specifically looked for infant rooms without all that stuff. We follow a more RIE method where baby gets lots of freedom of movement, which means floor time. I also think swings and baby containers can get overused a lot!

Both my kids had terrible reflux would have been miserable at day care without a bouncy seat or a swing as an option. Our teachers are wonderful and engaging and don't need to have these items completely removed from the room in order to know not to use them as a babysitter.

@mediagirl: the thing is the carpeting is BRAND new. And they have a no shoes policy which is great. But still how clean is the carpet going to stay? And these are young babies who are still practicing tummy time and not rolling or crawling yet. It's also that really rough industrial carpeting. I know my kids have sensitive skin but her second day she came home with a red spot on the back of her head (the size of a dime) from where she had obviously laid on the raw carpeting for a long while moving her head back and forth.

It sounds like what I should push for is at least more soft play mats that are machine washable.

DS hasn't started going yet but I'm with others on choosing our daycare because the walls weren't lined with swings, etc. They have them for occasional use but max of 20 minutes. Then they get put away. The ratios are very low 1:2 and 1:3.

It's funny that you mentioned carpeting. DH was really critical of all of the places we toured that had carpeting. His gripe, and I agree, is that it's impossible to fully clean each day, Our place just has play mats.

All that said, I know your a seasoned pro (and I'm just a new FTM) but go with your mamma instinct on what your child needs! If he needs an exersaucer or whatever now and again, then I'd say something.

I'm pretty sure our daycare isn't even allowed swings and bouncers. Having said that, im in Canada so the licensing rules are probably different and generally babies are closer to 1 year when they go to daycare. But even with younger babies you're not allowed those things. I don't think it would bother me but I've never been in that position.

My son's old daycare also had no swings or bouncers and when touring daycares for kid #2 today, I saw swings and bouncers at two different places I visited. Like others have said, I actually found it to be a turn-off. I don't like the idea that they are used to babysit the kids. Our place had boppy pillows and the floor but that was it and I think I prefer that.

At our center, the newborn teachers are great at "rocking" a baby in a boppy lounger while given another a bottle. These ladies are pros at multi-tasking.

They do have separate chairs available if they have a baby that needs to sit up following a meal.

Both my kids have gone through the same infant room and they've never had bouncers or swings or high chairs. For the floor, they have a large playmat, a crib mattress, some blankets to lay out, and lots of boppies. I've been able to nurse my daughter this year in her classroom, so I've been lucky to see how the room works and I think it's great. The teachers are always on the floor. They're incredible! They can cradle a small baby to feed him, have another young one in a boppy next to them, another sitting supported against their legs, and still engage with the mobile babies crawling around. I think the change helps teachers engage more with the kids (and, wow! I had no idea how many uses there were for a boppy!)

I can understand why the daycare would want to have rules against overuse. We didn't make much use of baby holders at home (except for a sparsely used RNP) but we used the Boppy and tummy time mat loads, so they should definitely have more than 1 of those! I will say that my son loved boogying in the Jumperoo at daycare and I'd be a little bummed for him if they didn't have something like that for a little playtime.

@PawPrints: do you not use a bouncy seat or RNP or anything like that at home? I guess I just don't see how daycare is any different if they are only using it for a few minutes at a time.

A baby can just as easily be left alone on the floor as they can in a seat.

I do think I would like to talk to them about more play mats. They just have one so the are spending tummy time face down on the raw industrial carpeting.

Our daycare didn't have swings or bouncers. Each baby always had a boppy and a playmat. When multiple babies needed attention the teachers would position the boppies around them and back pat the babies. This set up meant the babies had lots of tummy time before they learned to sit up.

I think we have state laws where I live against bouncers in daycares because there's a risk of just keeping a kid in there all day long or leaving a child unattended. My old daycare didn't even use high chairs or seats and fed children sitting on the floor! Not having these things is supposed to make the caretakers more engaged and the ratios should be low enough where they can do that.

Our older was in a daycare that really used "seats" for kiddos. Our current daycare prefers not to. They have one exersaucer and two bouncy seats in the two infant rooms (total). Our second daughter walked three months earlier and crawled earlier too. I think it's more than coincidental.

Already I see this:

Infant seats (swings, bouncers, etc.) should be used only for short periods of time, no more than 15 to 30 minute intervals per infant and no more than two times per day that the child is in care.

@T.H.O.U.: I see your point. I also remember one daycare I toured where it seemed they used the bouncers as baby-sitters and the kids were in them for way too long each day. I think it could be a good thing.

That being said, it was nice to walk in some days and see my daughter in a lap and another child being bounced by the same teacher (or v/v).

I'd ask if they were planning on getting new ones (maybe they are re-doing the place and want new, fresh items? Maybe you could even offer to donate one if they are planning on getting some "at some point".

We love our daycare and our son attending there as an infant but i"m not sure if this change bothers me. They just redid the infant rooms over holidays and my daughter started there at the new year. She's 4.5 months and most are similar in age. I noticed that there are no longer swings or bouncy seats or exersaucers.

I dont mind not having swings (they never had batteries anyways and couldn't have cords). But the close to the ground basic bouncy seats was always nice that a teacher would be rocking and feeding one baby and bouncing a second baby facing her on the floor. So it felt like that second baby was getting "attention" even though not being held.

Now they just have cribs to sleep in, one small play mat on the floor and the rest just carpeting. Would this bother you? Would you say something? Is there logic/research to why they no longer have these items?
