@BeachMama: Do they not give a letter or put up a sign when a contagious illness is confirmed there?

charlie was just as sick when he was home with a nanny because he went to so many indoor playspaces in the winter, which have even more germs than daycare since there are way more kids.

charlie started daycare in sept when he was almost 2, and was pretty much sick the entire winter and the beginning of spring. he was the same way when he was with a nanny his first winter. but i think his immune system is finally stronger because he's only had one mild cold this fall/winter season!

Wagon Jr. was sick ALL the time the first few months of daycare, especially the winter. But it has definitely helped his immune system. Even when conjunctivitis (pinkeye) went around the daycare (even the teachers got it!) Wagon Jr. had a little bit of crustiness for one day and then was totally fine. This year he has only been sick twice, and neither time kept him out of daycare. Obviously he's older (almost 3 now) but also I think the first year of daycare really strengthened his immune system.

I've heard time and time again that daycare kids never miss school when they start kindergarten, and kids who stayed home with a parent or grandparent or nanny are constantly sick and missing school.

Hmm, I guess I'm the odd man out. LO has been in full time daycare since the beginning of Sept (12 weeks - 6 months old) and she has had 1 ear infection and 2 colds - but not sure if the cold came from us or daycare as we had colds too.

@mediagirl: I was just going to say that it gets better after 6 months!

DD got sick a few times during the first 6 months. She also started daycare in November so that's when a lot of illnesses start going around. It got a lot better after that and she's rarely ever sick now.

She's been sick on and off (weekly) since she started in September. It stinks. Sorry she has pink eye. My lo had that, as well. Sick babies are so sad. Everyone tells me she will have a great immune system in 6 months. Okay. Waiting....

I'm so sorry - that never fun and it's so frustrating to see them sick all the time. DD is sick a lot. Lady month, she had two colds, pneumonia and 3 ear infections. Sorry to be Debbie Downer - I wish there was something positive I could say about it.

Wow, that makes me feel a little better. What frustrates me though is when they call and tell me she has pink eye, then say "oh yeah, it's been going around here." I think a warning that it was going around would have been nice. Especially because I work in healthcare in pediatrics and now I'm paranoid I've spread it to all of my patients!

DS has been in daycare since July and I have lost count of the times he has been sick. He had the stomach flu over Thanksgiving and an ear infection earlier in November. The ear infection actually caused him to get pink eye. If it wasn't for me taking him to the dr for pink eye I wouldn't have known he had an ear infection!

The pediatrician told us to expect him to be sick every two weeks this winter since he is in daycare. He may not get sick that often but its nice to be prepared. Then next winter it won't be as bad and the winter after that should be okay.

A LOT!
Especially in the beginning. Atleast once every month I have to call the doctor to ask about something because LO is sick. So far kids at her daycare have had Pink eye, coxsackie, RSV.. and numerous colds. SHe has been "lucky" and never got coxsackie or pink eye. She has only been at daycare for 4 months and it can get very frustrating but I think its getting better slightly

My daughter has been in daycare for a month and a half and in that time I feel like she's had a constant cold. Last week she had an ear infection. Today she got sent home with pink eye. I know these things are highly contagious and it just comes with being in daycare, but it seems like a lot of sickness. Maybe they're just not cleaning the toys enough. If your baby is in daycare, how often does he/she get sick?
