For us it was easy. There's not really the concept of preschool here, so my son will go from daycare to the equivalent of kindergarten this fall.

We are going to have two boys 20 months apart and DH wants them to stay at the same daycare/preschool until DS is in kindergarten and at that point switch them both (our preferred school has preschool to 12th grade beginning at age 3). I'm sorta torn about it. The preschool at the long term school provides lunch and snack so that would be one less thing to do and it's not that far from the daycare. Plus, the boys would never be in the same class anyway, but at the same time, I can DH's point about moving them together at once so they feel more secure?

We will be switching to public pre-k if we get in. (It's a lottery). Our current daycare busses kids from there for after school care and it will still be cheaper even with after school care. And drop offs will be fine since it is on my way to work and daycare for DS2 is in the way for DH.

We switched to a private preschool program. The daycare was closing and I was looking for other options, thinking I would do a 3s program as part of a daycare. I didnt find what I was looking for and ended up finding a program that is part of a local nature center.

DD1 is turning 4 this month. If we get into the public UPK morning program she will start that in the fall. It's only a half day so DH will drop DD1 off in the morning and I will drop DD2 off at daycare. Then after the morning session my daycare has a bus (with car seat installed!) that will pick up and take kids to daycare. Then we will pick up both from daycare after work. When she starts K she will go to daycare for aftercare as well. At least until DD2 starts K.

I really struggled with this because I wasn't sure if going to her elementary for UPK then getting on a bus to daycare would be too much for her at 4. I polled HB too. ;) Between talking to DH and parent experiences on here, we felt it would be advantageous to have her acclimated to her school a year early. She'll get to form friendships a year earlier with kids she'll be spending the next 6 years with! She'll be familiar with the school, etc. I also joined the PTA Facebook group of our school and the UPK teacher even hopped on! All the parent experiences on there really made me feel comfortable about our decision.

And the cost savings will be awesome as well! ;)

@hummusgirl: this is why our switch to public will include adding a nanny in the afternoon. It will cut our pick ups out...which will help balance having 2 drop offs...thankfully the public schools are right by DHs work and DC is right by my work...

I will keep dd (3) in her current preschool/daycare. The preschool at the public school is tuition based, meaning anyone can enroll. So she wouldn't necessarily meet anyone that she'd go to elementary school with. Also we have lo2 at the same daycare so another issue is convenience. Next year she'll be eligible for tk which is considered public school (first year of 2 year kindergarten) so we'll make the move then

@hummusgirl: For us it's not horrible, but it is extra work. Our daycare and school are about 1 mile apart. I actually pass the school and drop the younger at daycare first and backtrack. Our extended day at the elementary requires pickup by 6:00 and daycare by 6:30.

The hardest thing for me has been breakfast. DD1 eats at home now whereas she used to get breakfast at daycare. The next hardest was lunch. She now prefers to eat the hot lunch at the cafeteria, but before I was having to pack a lunch each day.

I'm curious about this too. DS1 is on the waiting list for a public preschool program but he's so happy at his current daycare, and DS2 just started there too. I think at the moment I'm inclined to just keep him where he is out of convenience, and I don't underestimate convenience - I can only imagine the impact on our daily lives with two separate dropoffs/pickups/afterschool programs etc. But then again I'm lazy. ;-)

@T.H.O.U.: this was my first thought...but knowing they will at some point be split up I started thinking of doing when it may be best for DD1...they would still be together during summer!

@MamaG: we still have tuition for the 4s program but it's about $500 less than DC...but the transition is why I keep thinking about it. I just think a gradual transition to public school may be the safer route...

I wish there was a clear cut answer bc I hate these big decisions!!!

We switched to public school. We didn't have any financial savings as the 4's program requires tuition. It really helped DD get to learn the routine and expectations. She loves the program and being in "school". The transition to Kinder is going to be really easy on her.

So... DD1 has been in daycare full time since 4 mos...she is turning 3 in September.

Our daycare goes through pre-school and has a school age program in the summers. It is not in our school district so after/before care is not available as they only do pick ups at in district schools.

Our public school district is great...consistently top 1-3 in the state. They have full day pre-school starting at 4, and kindergarten starting at 5 (we will have to apply for a waiver as DD1 misses the cut off by 4 days but I am optimistic).

I am torn between starting her at 4 so she can get to know some kids in her school district before starting kindergarten the next year at 5 or just keeping her at DC until 5 for simplicity since her sister is 2.5 years younger than her...and therefore stuck at DC until 2020...

When did you make the jump to the public system or private school?

Fwiw...when DD1 makes the move we have a cost save in tuition but it will go towards having an afternoon nanny from 3pm-6pm as the public school programs end at 3pm...
