@littlek: I go through phases where one thing is done *wrong* and then everything they do annoys me, too. As such, I usually wait a few days before acting on something that I want to speak with them about to decide whether it's worth it. In the end, the provider might not have phrased things well, but they would have had to have spoken with these parents about the move. Tyler is now one of the oldest in the infant room, too. FWIW, my pediatrician told me that there is very little that providers/parents do that affect milestones. It's all sort of hardwired....

@littlek: Daycare tried to move DD up into the toddler room this week, but I put a stop to it, at least for a few months. Even though she's walking, she still needs two naps. She's now the oldest, but I only look at it being a couple of months before she moves up, and she'll start picking up more off the older kids quickly.

@MamaMoose: I agree.

@littlek: I am not trying to sound harsh, just a voice of reason. We have dealt with a lot of issues at our center too. I really try to pick my battles carefully with the center though and I would like to stay on their good side! So little stuff like this I try not to make a big deal of it (until it really impacts my kid).

Honestly, I dont' think you can be upset just because they won't keep babies there to help your child develop.

If those kids are ready to move up OR if they are willing to accommodate those kids in the older room and the parents are ok with it then you shouldn't' really complain. I agree they should talk to the parents about moving kids up before hand, but there is a good chance the director did that and the parents were ok with the move.

If you do talk to the director, I would ask when they expect your child to move up. If he is the oldest then there is a good chance when the next wave of new babies comes in they may want him to move up as well. Just something I would be prepared to deal with.

The daycare I worked in moved babies at 12 months regardless of if they were walking or not. However, they talked to parents about it before moving them to see what they were comfortable with. I think they made the choice because in the toddler room, things are more advanced and less "baby", so maybe they were thinking it would help the LOs learn to walk sooner and the toys would be more age appropriate.

I don't think you really can complain about them moving other children. If the parents of those children have concerns it's their responsibility to raise it with the director. As others have said their parents may have requested the move.. And the director can't hold those children back just so they can stay as an example for your child. I think you should raise the issue only if and when they try to move your child if you feel he's not ready yet.

Honestly, this exact thing is one of the reasons why we didn't go with the fancier daycare that I was considering. The daycare decided to open up another room of older babies (not yet 1 year olds) and seemed to be acting more like a baby farm than a caring and nurturing place for the babies. I would probably talk to the director about it. That would bother me.

@littlek: If that was said directly to you by a daycare person, then yes, I would bring it up with the director. Maybe from the perspective of their plans for your baby since you've noticed what is happening with the other babies.

It's a new daycare facility (only been open 1 year) so I get that they want to bring in business I just don't want it to be at the expense of my LO. In reality they should have 2 infant rooms, a young infants and older infants. But I'm not a daycare owner so it doesn't really matter what I think.

If you are realy concerned is doesnt hurt to ask the director about it, because sometimes the teachers dont have the most accurate information and @pelikila: could be right that maybe the parents have also exressed interest in their children being around older kids

Having said that, I do understand your concerns, I like my LO being around older kids too she learns so much from them. At her daycare they wait until the child is walking confidently before moving the child

I would probably talk to the daycare; that seems really young. They just moved 2 babies from our infant room to the toddler room but both were over 1 year old, both walked (well), can feed themselves without any help, etc. I am bummed because like you, my LO is now one of the oldest and doesn’t have too many babies who are crawling/walking for her to watch and copy anymore.

Our daycare has more young toddlers and sometimes infants have to stay in the baby room past 12 months. My LO is 1 now and I can't wait for her to move...it should be in a few weeks. She isn't walking yet but she stands and cruises.

@pelikila: When I asked the teacher if (insert baby name here) was moving the teacher said yes "we need to make room for another infant starting next week." I think that's what bugged me.

Honestly I probably wouldn't say anything to them unless they were trying to move my baby before I thought he was ready because you never know if it is a parent requesting the move or something else. When my son turned 12 months his daycare started talking about moving him to the toddler room soon and he wasn't walking at all so I raised concern that he wasn't ready. Their criteria for moving to toddlers had been walking, feeding self (via hands), and holding/drinking from a cup and my son was only doing 2 out of 3. Once we got to talking their rationale made sense but I asked them to wait another month and doing the transition very slowly instead of over 1 week like they usually do. They were amenable and he spent a full month transitioning to the toddler room. For my son it was about motivation. He wasn't likely to walk unless he had plenty of models and a reason to want to keep up and he was the oldest infant in his room and the rest of the infants were several months behind him so it wasn't like one of them was about to start modeling the behavior. He had been the same way about crawling and had really bonded with a particular infant teacher so there was no way he was going to do anything to leave her. I think each kid is different and perhaps the daycare might have a reason beyond the obvious. My original thought was that my daycare wanted to move my son to bring in more infants but once we spoke about it, I realized that wasn't the case. They didn't have any infants waiting to come in at all, they were wanting to do what was best for my son developmentally.

So, recently our daycare has been moving a bunch of babies out of the infant room and into the young toddler room. Two of them were walking, so I understand why they moved. However, they are moving one baby who is still crawling. And there is talk about moving the last 2 babies into the young toddler room as well to make room for new babies (1 is crawling, the other is not). FYI- none of these kids are 1 yet. So, it has gone from my LO being the youngest till now the oldest and he's only 7 months. I understand the daycare wants to make money and the best way is by bringing in new kids but I worry my LO will suffer now that he is surrounded by babies that are much younger than him. He had been doing amazing with his milestones and I know that was due to him being surrounded by babies slightly older than him. I'm thinking about talking to the daycare owner about this because the trend is concerning. What do you think? The young toddlers room has no cribs and they only take 1 nap.
