Thanks for the replies! It's helpful to know this isn't unusual. (And I know things could still change as she settles in. I hope so!)

How does LO nap at home?

Again, this is probably not what you want to hear but LO took 2 30 minute naps most days at daycare (she was there about 8 hours). I was worried at first but she only took 45 min naps for me at home. Daycare said they were not worried because she was happy and alert when awake so I let it go. Her naps did improve in the toddler room. Now at 3, she still doesn't sleep much and it works for her. So the big question is how the nap issue is affecting LO--if she is ok, don't worry too much.

Probably not what you want to hear but DS never napped well at day care until he moved to the toddler room at 12 months.

Sounds pretty typical to me for a daycare. You said she just started? It seems super early to worry it will stay this way until she moves to the toddler room. They get used to it and adjust. My LO needed total silence and darkness when he started daycare at 3months and I was terrified - he wouldn't nap for me if his older brother wandered in while I was trying to start nap time, so hoesas he ging to nap in a room full of other kids? But he totally adjusted. Took some experimenting with sleep sacks and different schedules, but now he naps better for daycare than he does for me!

Sounds pretty normal to me. Our daycare naps each infant on their own schedule and has only one time when they turn off lights. Occasionally DS gets two good naps but many (most?) days his naps aren't great. He's 14 months and has been in daycare for 8. It's difficult at times but overall he is thriving.

Our daycare has a separate nap room (though it's pretty much open and connected to the general infant room) with a low gate. They play soft music and it's pretty dim, blinds are shut.

The infant teachers like yours will hold, rock, and pat the babies down to nap and then there are always 1-2 teachers solely in the nap room to watch them and help them stay down , if they stir. The babies nap at all diff times so it's like this all day.

At about noon, they turn the overall infant area lights down a bit (there are 2 classes) and even if the kids are awake, they try to play quietly. I think this is to prep them for the toddler class since that room has a set nap time.

Both LO's started daycare at around 4 months and I think at 5 months, their naps were still spotty.. Good days and bad.

I think since you know the teachers are doing what they can do help the babies sleep, I'd ask more about when they are trying to nap LO. Maybe he is overtired and they're missing his cues?

Hang in there!

Yep, this is pretty much what daycare naps are like for infants. Some days are better than others, but it's still pretty much a crap-shoot until they are in the toddler room and all the kids nap at the same time.

Our daughter is having a tough time napping at daycare and I'm looking for some perspective.

Background: we have a 21 month old and a 5 month old. 21 month old attends a Montessori school (since 10 months old). He struggled to nap there until he moved to the toddler room, at 18 months, and now naps fine. The toddler room has a common nap time, where lights are off and shades are drawn.

Our five month old is just starting in the infant room. The infant room has children from a few months up to 18 months. There is no common nap time, with the idea being that the children should sleep when ready and children at different stages have different sleep needs. The room is never bright, and the room is generally calm; but there aren't drawn curtains ever and there are often awak babies making a lot of noise. The caregivers do work hard to get the babies to nap: they have white noise, they will rock or hold the babies, wear or stroll the babies, sing, rub their backs. But several of the babies, including ours, seem to be struggling with napping.
Ours is still transitioning in, but I nervous--for both her and us--that this might last until she moves to the toddler room.

Also, the infant program at this school is only one year old, so they are still working things out. We really love it general, but naps are important!

I feel comfortable talking with the teachers about this, but I would like to have a sense of what is reasonable. If you have an infant at a daycare center, how do naps get handled? And how does your child do?
