@JennyD: yep, drop off and pick-up. My husband does it once a week and I do it the other 4. There have been times when I have called him to ask him to get her on one of my days and he replies, "I can't. I have this or that work thing," and I get so irritated because what the heck does he think I'm doing? I have work, too!
BUT- this is kind of my fault because in the beginning I wanted more control of everything and I wanted to do it all, if that makes sense.
We have recently talked about him helping with drop off, but that adds an hour of daycare to her day because of his commute.

@lizzywiz: I know! Do you do drop off too? I'm pushing my husband to do more pick ups and drop offs. What do you do?

That's so frustrating. It doesn't happen often, but it has happened (like yesterday). I try to get in early so I can leave early, but I didn't get out until 5:15 last night, which meant that it took me twice as long to get home (due to traffic)

@JennyD: My biggest frustration is that my husband doesn't get it. He picks her up once a week and he doesn't get that I am rushing out the other 4 days, every week. It definitely impacts my career, but it isn't even an option in his so I have to do it. I just wish I got a little more appreciation for it.

that sounds really frustrating. my work is really flexible for the hours i work and if i want to work at home, etc. most of the team i work on (marketing) is virtual anyway, so we're not really monitored by an 8-5 schedule. on the downside, i pretty much have to be available by phone and email 24/7, but most of the time, i don't have to worry about being looked down on for having to rush out.

I try to let people know that I'm happy to meet outside of my regular schedule if I have advance notice.

Although, even before I became a mom, I hate meetings that started late! (4:30, 4:45, etc). No thanks! :)

I try to be flexible and let them know that with notice or under an emergency I can stay (our daycare doesn't close until 6:30). But I hate sitting around just to chit chat.

I've had to bail on a few meetings due to daycare issues. I leave almost every day at 4:00 because, hey, i put in my 8 hours. thankfully most of my coworkers leave earlier than me, but *shrug* it is what it is. My coworkers are understanding. They have grandchildren now. honestly, I'm quite unapologetic about it. I leave when I leave and that's my schedule.

since i do mornings, i actually make my outlook calendar show that i am unavailable until i get in. I couldn't meet with someone today because E has a dr appt this morning. Eh.

Luckily my job doesn't require meeting like that so it's a non issue, but I see what you mean. I keep trying to leave the office earlier and earlier ;)

Yeah I totally felt like a loser leaving at 4:30 every day for pick up so I get it! There wasn't anyone else with kids so no one left before 7.

My coworkers have respected my shifted schedule and have not asked me to stay past my 4:30 departure time. I sold it to them by pointing out I've available to turn lab equipment on, set things up, etc when I get in at 7:30.

I get frustrated that I don't have the luxury to stay late and go 'above and beyond' on a regular basis. I'm taking a work sponsored online class on my own time at their request so that's about 6 hours a week. I am not working outside of office hours on top of that.

Yes...2 days this week, my team held last-minute meetings from 4:15-5 (and both went over). I took them on the road via Bluetooth. I leave at 4:30 everyday unless I have advanced notice that I will need to stick around, and then I make other arrangements. My coworker asked both days "are you leaving early again?" And then the following day, complained that when I participated in the calls she could hear so much noise because I was driving. Ugh.

Yes. I leave the office at 5pm everyday regardless of whether I have a deadline, etc. I try not to schedule conference calls after 4pm. It usually works out. I totally get it though.

My office is small and everyone knows I have to take off. Sometimes I love it because I can just say well, gotta go! I was kicking myself today for telling a coworker who wouldn't stop talking DH was doing pick up!

But that would've been frustrating!!

Any other working moms feel the double standard of working and being responsible for the daycare pickup?

I was called into a meeting this afternoon, around 4:45, to discuss a huge project we're working on. The meeting was with 3 of the company owners, my immediate supervisor, and a colleague. All men.

At 5:20, just as we seemed to be getting somewhere with the meeting, I had to leave because I am responsible for daycare pickup (my husband works on the other side of town and didn't get enough notice to leave early to do the pickup).

I'm sure I should just be pleased that I was at least invited to the meeting, but I absolutely HATE that I had to run out like that.
