@macintosh: Can you try plastic pants over the cloth underwear? Then he will still feel wet, but there's less clean-up for the teachers.

I think that 1-2 accidents a day for multiple days is asking a lot of the teachers. Especially combined with adjusting to new children and a higher teacher/child ratio.

We're potty training kiddo #2 right now, and daycare has always simply said let us know what you want and we will support it. With kiddo #1 we used a long Labor Day weekend to ditch the diapers at 25 months. She had a bunch of accidents the first 2 days after that, then almost none. Kiddo #2 was doing well with sitting on the potty and having dry diapers so we tried to ditch the diaper at 22 months and had 1-2 accidents per day for about a month. Daycare didn't say anything about going back to diapers, but we went back to diapers because I wanted to avoid possible bladder issues we might be causing with early training. We tried to use this past Labor Day weekend to potty train and one week in he had accidents 2-5 times each day. Daycare feedback was that they will work to ensure we're better supporting him. Today with us we were out and about with an active day and had zero accidents so I am optimistic that he really is ready this time!

My eldest was 30months when we sent her to daycare in underwear. We never sent pull-ups but they had diapers there if needed. She had a total of 2 accidents in the first week and that was it. I think that many accidents in a day is a sign he just isn't quite ready yet.

@LBee: I tried that yesterday AM, but somehow the pull-up was removed and he had an accident everywhere - pants, socks, even his blanket! This morning at home was a hot mess, so I get it.

Thanks for everyone's input. If your LO trained while attending daycare, how long did it take to stop having accidents? Not including naps, of course.

@macintosh: Also, if he needs to feel wet then I would do underwear with a pull-up over it. This isn't a popular HB opinion, but my son didn't treat pull ups like diapers once training. Feeling wet didn't indicate the accident to him, he knew when his body was peeing.

Ours pretty much wants them fully potty trained before they start wearing underwear at school. With that said once we started sending her in underwear there were a coupl days where they kept diapers on after her nap, because the afternoon teacher didn't realize she wasn't wearing them in the morning.

Ours allowed you to train while in 2 class. My daughter used the potty consistently before she started but had about two weeks with 2 (or 3) potty mistakes within the week so they told me to try pull ups again. I didn't want to because I knew it was just a transition thing but I did. After respectfully abiding and going to pull-ups for two more weeks I switched back again and was fine. It helps to directly work with your preschool to agree on the next approach while being flexible. I think daily accidents are definitely pull up territory when it comes to preschool.

Our let us do undies (but we couldn't go without undies). She had 2-3 pee accidents the first week then was pretty good for pee. She pooped in her undies almost every day for a month and then it finally clicked. They were good about it and just sent the dirty clothes home in a bag.

@erinbaderin: Agreed. Our school doesn't have a stated policy but did mention that multiple accidents a day for multiple days indicates to them that the child is not ready / getting it. They said it got to be a sanitation issue.

@erinbaderin: yeah, he's been wearing pull-ups for a while for convenience (he hates diaper changes) and he just treats it as a diaper. He needs to be naked or have cloth trainers so he can feel an accident since he's still learning. I might try a new design on the pull-ups to convince him it's a substitute for underwear.

Honestly, I think expecting them to deal with 1-2 accidents a day is a little much. I'm not sure what cloth training pants are, but I don't understand why pull-ups are a problem - can't he be in pull-ups and they still have him sit on the potty once an hour or whatever?

With B we started sending him in pull-ups and he would tell his teachers when he had to go, or they would ask once an hour and get him to try. Once he was keeping his pull-ups dry on a consistent basis they told us they thought he was ready for underwear.

@gingerbebe: There is an attached bathroom with 2 stalls. They change diapers in the same room, so it's part of their routine. There's even a section on the diaper sheet for potty training kids, but they haven't added DS yet. Maybe they just need some time to get organized with their new class.

Our school lets the families take the lead. Whenever your kid seems ready at home you send the kid to school in undies. They encourage undies only except naps and ask that lots of clothes be brought in. Then they will work on it for two weeks. If during that time the child is really not getting it, they will call to re-evaluate. The hope is that within that two week span it sticks.

Is there a potty in the classroom? Or does a teacher need to leave the room with the child to potty?

@macintosh: ugh that's annoying! We have been told that calling during nap time can be a good time to check in on issues because the teachers are there but the kids are sleeping. It might be worth a shot?

@MamaCate: Yeah, that's the problem. There was no orientation. He just moved up and I'll admit I don't feel as comfortable with the new teachers as I did before. I feel like they are too busy to talk at drop-off and pick up. They definitely have a lower student/teacher ratio. I guess we'll see how this weekend goes and I'll try to talk with one of the teachers about this on Monday. I'm seeing the other kids all in pull-ups, except the ones that are already trained.

@macintosh: this can be hard without clear communication about expectations. My DD potty trained in the 2s room. They were very enthusiastic about it and helped me gear up to be ready. They would put her on the potty every 30 minutes, reward her for dry diapers, etc. When we were ready to switch to undies, I let them know ahead of time and they were super supportive. I think she had 1-2 accidents the first week but that was it. I did not supply pull ups.

BUT, when I went to orientation for the 2/3s room when she moved up, they said very clearly that "we will tell you when we are ready for your child to come in undies and keep sending them diapered until being told otherwise." This was very different than the approach in the previous room! I was relieved we were done already!

So I would try to get on the same page with them about what this teacher is willing to do and then do lots of check ins. If that doesn't work, I would reach out to the office/director. This is an important developmental step and having all caregivers on the same page is key to success!

I decided to focus on potty training my 28 month old DS last weekend with some success.

I brought him to daycare with cloth training pants and several changes of clothes and asked that he be put in a pull up for nap only. He's having trouble going pee on the potty, but he will sit on it and he can also hold it for over 2 hours. He's had 1-2 accidents each day this week at school. When I pick him up he's always back in a pull-up.

There are other kids potty training in his room as well, so is it unreasonable to expect them to deal with pee accidents? I'm getting a vibe that they aren't thrilled. There's no written policy in the handbook about potty training.

What is your daycare's policy on potty training? Do they require pull-ups, or do they just deal with the inevitable accidents? Thanks!
