If you’re sending your other two and now you have this option I would send your third child as well! It doesn’t make sense to me to keep one him but send two. At least let them all go until / if there’s an inevitable shutdown then you can regroup!

I think I would send him. That way you have some amount of focused time to work your hiney off and focus while solo before a potential closure. I would be such a better mama for not having to balance both kids and work at the same time. Then, you could pick a couple things to spend a few minutes on in the evenings and on weekends with him. Good luck making your decision and know either way will be fine!

@HappyBaker: That was a big concern for us to but our teacher has assured us that she is considering it kindergarten with the goal of them being ready for 1st.

Glad to know others are considering the same!

@rpparker: will you “count” this year as K and have your child start at first grade next year? DH is concerned our son won’t be as ready going to daycare pre k vs me homeschooling, but to me I think this year for all kindergarteners is going to be such a crapshoot that as long as he’s learning to read / write more and a little math he’ll be totally fine.

Our pre-K usually stops at 4K but enough kindergarten families weren’t comfortable with the local public school option that they are offering a 5K! We opted to do that for lots of reasons but one being that it keeps our 5 year old and 2 year old in the same school.

We had already made the decision to send DS to Pre-K at his current daycare even though he turns 5 this week. He has loved being back at school with his friends the last few weeks and is ready to transition to his new class next week. They started a private Kindergarten program for next year and I am keeping that as a back up option.

We recently decided to redshirt our newly 5 year old and send her to pre k did another year. Similarly, there are other kids doing the same thing here and she will be with kids her age. Her little brother has already started back at the same daycare and I feel reasonably good about the precautions they’re taking. While I could manage working from home with her home, it will be SO much easier to do so without her. But ultimately, our decision was based on the fact that we feel like having social interaction with other kids is so important - especially for her since she’s very shy.

@Miss Ariel: haha yes I’m hoping this is similar to childbirth in that way and in a few months /years we’ll just remember how much great together time we had and not the soul crushing grind it has been!

@erinbaderin: yea I feel like both him and my 2nd grader are going to have trouble re-integrating into playing with lots of kids so doing it now as opposed to spending another year home would definitely help there!

I’d probably send him to the daycare to do pre-k. I’d think the risk is fairly minimal since you’d already be sending your youngest there so they’d be in a similar environment.

We sent both of ours back to daycare July 1st and even though it hasn’t even been a month I can barely remember what working with them at home was like. I think I’ve blocked it all out in my mind so I don’t have to relive it!

I would send him - I think the social aspect is the most important at that age.

I had finally figured out what all 3 of my kids were doing this fall and come to terms with each plan and of course now have another decision to make! I’ve posted about the decisions before, but my oldest goes to a private school, and will be going back full time. My 2 year old is going back to daycare. I was planning to homeschool my rising kindergartener and getting actually excited about it as he’s been really receptive to learning with me this spring and summer. I’d be homeschooling him for an hour or so in the morning and then working from home while he hopefully plays independently most of the day.

But what has now thrown a wrench in my sureness is that his daycare (where little brother will be going and where he just finished preschool) is opening a pre k class for kids who WOULD be in kindergarten but are either redshirting or just entering school as first graders next Fall. (K is not required here)

So now I’m super torn on what to do. On the one hand he’d love being back with some of friends, and since it’s daycare they can follow less strict guidelines than our public schools. Working from home with ZERO children home seems like a crazy dream at this point ha, but would certainly be ideal. But on the other hand, working with just one kid who is fine playing alone would be light years easier than what I’ve been doing. Its also that many more germs for another class of kids, and we’ll already have two classes worth of germs for my other two kids, and who knows if they’ll be able to stay open all year anyway.

What would you do in this situation? I feel like if I have to make another decision where there is no right answer I’m going to explode haha.
