I think gifts are not expected, but greatly appreciated. DD goes to an in-home daycare (so just one teacher who we love) and we got her a $50 gift certificate to local restaurant she likes and DD painted her an ornament at one of those pottery painting places.

We choose to give $50 because we can afford it and she does a wonderful job. As a teacher myself, I believe a card is just as appreciated as a larger gift, especially if there's a nice note or a picture from the kid. It's really having someone reaffirm that the work you do is valuable.

What's the standard amount on a gift card per teacher? LO has been going for a few months, 1/2 days twice a week. He has two main teachers I see at drop off and pick up and three more who I don't know very well. I was thinking of getting them a gc to a coffee shop but have no idea how much to put on!

I don’t think it’s expected but I think it’s a nice gesture. Our old Daycare pooled money together and bought really amazing gifts for the teachers. We are at a new Daycare now, so I just put together a gift basket with chocolates, a variety of tea, and a big bag of popcorn. We will make and decorate sugar cookies too and my kids will make cards for their teachers. I’m planning on bringing it in on Monday so they can enjoy for the week before Christmas holidays.

@jennlin821: We have 5 years of experience with different daycares. I would say its good practice to give something. Our gifts range from gift baskets from costco to giftcards.

I ditto exactly what @2PeasinaPod: and @erinbaderin: said.

I could not do what these women do, and they do it very well. I dont feel they are compensated sufficiently givenwhat I know they make. Plus they do a job I could not do. These are the reasons I give a gift.

I would not say gifts are expected. But certainly appreciated. I also feel a hand written note expressing your gratitude can go a long way.

My first year at our center, DD had been 4 times come Christmas - I felt lost at what to do but I knew I wanted them to know I valued them so I chose to do a gift card. Not knowing the ladies well I just did Amazon I think (maybe Target?), and only for the teachers in the newborn room.

Our old daycare I think they were appreciated but not expected. We always did a $20 Target gift card. Our current daycare they are expected, we got a letter from a parent contact who collects cash and gives all the teachers equal gift based on what is collected.

Yes! What pp said. Childcare wages are so low for the very important work they do.

I don’t know if they’re expected - I don’t know what the other parents do - but I always give a gift. They take such great care of my kids, I like to do something to show I appreciate it. We always got our teachers Christmas presents when I was in school, and my parents were teachers and always got gifts at Christmas, so I see this as the same.

At my daycare I think gifts are expected. What you give- a card only, tangible gift, a gift card is entirely up to the parent/ family.

My philosophy is that these are the people who care for your children day in and day out, and they don't get paid what they should (the day care might, but the teachers do not). I like to get them gifts as they usually have your child's best interest at heart.

I get the impression from our daycare teachers that they aren't expected, but they are very much appreciated!

So, someone explain to me about daycare teacher gifts?

We've only been at this daycare for 2 months (and I don't love it). Are gifts to teachers expected?

Growing up, we NEVER gave gifts to teachers so this is new territory for me.

Enlighten me please!
