I would be pissed :( the director/admin should know when a teacher is there/late, and should have appropriate floaters/backup care in place to accept students, especially in the morning! Smooth drop offs are so impt to setting the tone for the day!

@travellingbee: it's actually 100% the directors fault/issue and not the teacher. The director should know if teachers are tardy (regardless of when she gets in) and have people/a plan in place for if someone is late. I'm shocked that you as a parent had to ask the director to address that!

@erinbaderin: teachers in schools have contract hours that begin before children arrive & so are usually at school "early". They're also salaried, so it doesn't matter when they arrive. Daycare teachers are hourly, so any extra time they are there is unpaid. My hours begin at 7:30, which is when I can punch in/get paid, so that's when I get to work. Of course, my center has enough coverage & a routine that allows for my students to be dropped off even if I'm not in the classroom.

I think you did the right thing for sure! If it continues I would return to the director and explain you'll have to move lo to a different center if it continues as its unprofessional and makes the daycare look bad as well. It's not personal, it's business

@erinbaderin: Yes, that is exactly how I feel. If your kids walk in the door at 730, you need to be there at least 10 minutes early to put away your purse and get stuff ready....

It sounds like you've handled it well, and that the coverage issue might work itself out after the director talks with the staff? If it doesn't, I'd ask for a meeting with the director, and ask for a specific plan if anyone is late.

I would probably also ask for the timing issue to be reflected on my monthly invoice. It's absurd to pay for care you're not getting, and have disciplinary action at your own job when your arrival is completely out of control.

It's nuts to me that she even seems to think that the fact that it opens at 7:30 means she needs to be there by 7:30. My parents were teachers. School started at 8:30. They were there by 8 to make sure they were ready to actually get the kids at 8:30, they weren't rolling in the front door with their students! You were totally not out of line talking to the director, especially if you'd mentioned it to her before. Traffic is not an excuse, traffic is why you leave 15 minutes earlier than you think it will take to get somewhere.

@travellingbee: Except that it's the center's fault for not ensuring that their employees are there to provide that coverage and not having a plan in place. What if that teacher was in a car accident on the way to work? Now all the parents show up and there's no one there, and apparently no one at the center is paying attention to if there's anyone there. Whether the center is providing the coverage they promised doesn't seem to be on the director's radar would be a big problem for me.

I would just ask what the coverage plan is for when the teacher is not there when you arrive? If you contracted for childcare starting at 7:30, it's up to the school to have a plan for coverage in place.

We contract for childcare 7:30 - 6:30. B's teacher arrives between 7:30-8. We know that if we bring him before then, he needs to be dropped off in the younger 2's class. If there's too many kids, they rearrange and adjust teachers as needed until all teachers arrive.

@MaryM: Oh I agree. I just mean it isn't a problem with the coverage system, per se. They have systems in place that worked just fine in our old classroom. It is a management of people problem. This teacher has an issue with tardiness and the director needs to correct that for sure.

@travellingbee: but if it's a consistent problem that the teacher isn't there on time, it becomes the school/director's fault. You're paying for a service that's supposed to begin by 7:30, and you're not getting it.

If they're having trouble with the teacher, they need to step in to correct it.

Thanks all for the support. Here is the coverage situation:
Each classroom has 2 teachers. One is an early teacher from 7:30-4:30 and the other is a late teacher from 9-6. They have staggered schedules for the kids too and your schedule is based on your need and the numbers and determines what you pay. So there are only 3-4 kids that come before 9 am in his class, so only one teacher in that class until 9am. She is supposed to be in the classroom ready to go by 7:30 so the way I see it, it isn't the fault of the school not having coverage. It is her fault for not being there on time. If this doesn't take care of the problem, I will ask for an alternate coverage solution, I guess.

If it doesn't change soon, I would keep on the director about it.

I assume you get charged if you're late picking your child up? I think the same consideration needs to be given by the teacher. And if the teacher is going to be late, the director (or someone else) need to be in the classroom when you get there (or there should be a note telling you where to leave your child).

It shouldn't be your job to track down a place for your child to go.

Our daycare opens at 7 but our toddler room usually opens at 7:30, so if we bring him in earlier than that we just drop him in the infant room and they take him to his class when his teacher arrives. It was clear to that that was the protocol. You should definitely ask the director where you should drop off your child when the teachetlr isn't there.

You totally did the right thing. If the teacher is late then they need to have someone else to leave him with.

We were having this issue, I talked to the director, and the teachers (not her main teachers, she is with another from 7:15-8:00), started being on time. Sometimes they were in the building but were off getting the laundry, supplies, etc, and the director said nope, you have to come in early and do that.

The director and daycare should handle this. What if an emergency comes up, they have nobody who can step in to fill out the ratios? Where I worked even the admin person was certified for moments where someone was late or something like that. I definitely think you did the right thing. This shouldn't be your problem!

@Truth Bombs: Agreed!

Xander's teacher doesn't get in until 8:00 at our daycare, but there's always other teachers available when they open at 6:30, so we can still drop him off and not have to wait around for the "right" person to show up. Is that an option at your daycare, @travellingbee:?

I think you did the right thing. If the center opens at 7:30, someone needs to be there to take your child at 7:30. And I agree with others -- why isn't there "someone" who can take care of your LO when you arrive? Our center combines rooms until the kids get there and all of the teachers get there. So some mornings he is with his normal teachers, others the director and 1 teacher, etc.

Oh it for sure needs to be addressed; what if a teacher can't come in, though, don't they have an aide or a floating teacher for the time being? I'd think the director can serve as a stand in (and then SHE would be upset that the teacher is always late?)

We have a problem. Our new daycare teacher (LO moved up to the early preschool room) is often late to work. School starts at 7:30 and we need to be able to leave DS by 7:30 because we both have to be at work by 7:45 and have about a 10-15 minute commute depending on traffic. She has been about 5 minutes late at least 4 times in the past 2 1/2 weeks. Each time, it makes us late to work (we alternate who takes him). And then we get in trouble. I have said something to her before and she gave some excuse about traffic. I explained that we have no wiggle room and have to be able to leave right away. She said she would make sure to be there, but it has continued. It isn't every day. But it is often enough that it is a problem. Because I had already talked to her and it didn't fix the problem, I went to the director today. I emphasized that we really like her and it is just a logistical thing, but it makes a big difference in our lives and stress level. I also asked that she handle it in a way that won't make me out to be the mean mom. She said she wouldn't say who said it and she would address it with the whole staff first, since it is something everyone could use reminders on. I sure hope this gets fixed because we love the school, but we can't be late to work all year!! I'm a teacher too and I need to be at my school on time!

I guess I just needed to vent and needed reassurance that I did the right thing, going to the director. I just don't want the teacher to think negatively of our family and my child so I hate to complain...
