i've thought about whether we'll do this, and while there is an appeal to switching to a more learning-focused setting at preschool, i also feel like a lot of daycares these days have raised their game so that it's more than just free play time. i'll have to ask more questions and observe the older rooms at my daycare. the other consideration is that if we have another child, it would be easier if they were both in at the same place.

Luckily our daycare has a preschool class. I started looking around for other options but all the public ones are only a couple hours a day and that just doesn't work for us. In our daycare they have a set schedule/curriculum so the preschool portion is from 9-3pm and then after that it is "daycare" but they still do set activities like circle time.

We are planning to switch her to a more education-focused daycare center around 2.5. It has daycare hours, but preschool programs for the older children and more of a curriculum than our current center.

@locavore_mama: DH wants me to stay at home indefinitely. We will put DD in preschool when she's 3. After B's issues with daycare I have no desire to deal with daycares again. B will only be in preschool part time and half days.

The only "preschools" in this area are part time so we can't do that. She will stay in daycare.

@Andrea: I think that is my biggest thing. I want her in a more "school" environment at 3-4yrs. My fear is not being able to find a program that will also accept infants and is convenient for our home/work drop off pick up.

Our district has Pre-k but it is only a few hours a day so we aren't using it. She goes to a Montessori school. She was in daycare before and the difference to me is night and day. Daycare was much more play based and, quite frankly, chaotic compared to Montessori. I am very happy that we switched to a more "school" environment.

@locavore_mama: Ours stayed in the same DCP but its center based so its much more a "school" than a daycare would be.

My sister's LO is in a daycare that isn't school focused and when she turned 4 she went to daycare PT and then Pre-K PT everyday.

@littlek: what will you do about #2? A lot of the places around here that are dedicated "preschools" only take 3 and up. And that blows about no district preschools! That's quite perfect for SAHM who are looking for a few hours of freedom a day. ;)

In our school district, only some of the elementary schools offer Pre K (age 4). Other preschool options would be private and some are affiliated with day care centers.

My son went to a daycare that had a separate preschool program. The way I kind of split it in my head was that daycare was 5 days a week, from 8-6. Preschool, on the other hand, you have the option to go fewer days per week and fewer hours. You can more or less approximate day care hours by adding on before and after care.

@locavore_mama: in our area there are no district preschool programs unless you are special needs. Preschools are run by churches,, co-ops, Montessori, or daycare centers. We are planning on sending B to church based preschool when he's 3.

For parents who's (??) LOs have been in daycare from the start.

Are you planning on taking them out of their "daycare center" and enrolling in either your district preschool program or another "preschool"?

What in your opinion is the difference between a Daycare center vs Preschool?

This decision is coming up for us within the next year. But I would like both girls to be at the same place. And our district preschool is only a 2 hour program. The daycare that teaches the preschool is not one that we take LO to. I guess I could look into that daycare and see if we like it. But honestly I'm not sure if all the change and move is worth it for 2 free hours?
