@Thehistoryofus: we tried cloth at home and decided it wasn't for us, so we went back to sposies. My husband liked the convenience of the disposables and I liked less laundry. Maybe one day we'll try it again, I'm holding onto our diapers and inserts just in case.

@cvbee: That is great news!

@blackbird: I'm glad you found an in home center that will maybe work with you. She may have had bad experiences with other AIO's that were cheap or didn't fit right and that shouldn't stop her from trying them if that is what you want. Maybe once you get the hang of them at home and know what works you can bring them to her. The biggest thing with CD's is to make sure they are really clean so they are absorbent and to do frequent changes (every 2 hours). Just make sure that she doesn't not want to do CD because she doesn't want to change that often.

Hey! Good news! We got our cloth diapers approved for daycare and we are the very first people at this place to do it!

They wondered about 'health unit' issues, and I pointed out that I''m sure there is already some pee and poo that is dealt with when they have a diaper leak and it gets onto a kid's clothes.

They didn't think there would be room for a different diaper bin for ours, but I told them about our hanging dirty diaper bag.

They also were much more easily won over when I showed them the paper liners that would catch most of the poop and how they could get rid of that part.

When a broached the subject I referred to them as 'reusable diapers' and I had a bum genius 4.0 in my hand right away so they could see what I was talking about.

Diaper win!

I like this thread. I've been CDing for almost 9 months and tomorrow I'm going for our first play date at our daycare (where LO will attend starting in 2 months from now). I'm hoping to bring it up with them while there and so they can see what I am talking about. I hope they do let us do cloth. I think disposables are yucky.

@greenthumb, that's awesome! i priced out some cloth diaper services and it's certainly affordable!

For now, i'm counting my losses and we'll do the hybrid system (cloth shell, disposable insert) during the day and cloth at home.

I am surprised but I don't think they really know what cloth is all about now. It's not pins and such just like a disposable.

Also some centers I have heard are against cloth thinking they require a pail full of water to soak in but that's a big hazard in a classroom. But just a wet bag is all you need.

So silly really.

I actually went on my first daycare tour today and found out that they use a cloth diaper service for all the diaper changes during the day (as long as it is ok with the parents), and we just need to bring an extra one of our cloth diapers for LO to go home in! I was totally shocked and really pleased! This means only one/two dirty diapers coming home with us a day!

I was going to bring some in, but we ended up meeting with an in-home lady tonight that we LOVE and now plan on going with her instead of the big daycare by our house. We asked her about AIOs and diapers and she says she's done them but prefers not to, but she is OK with the hybrid style.

Again, I don't know how it's any different, but she says she had experience with the AIOs and they were nothing but messy and caused leaks and many problems. I imagine if we had a dr's note for sensitive skin (which i have, so LO may likely have), she'd be willing to work with them with us.

We don't use daycare, but I've heard of some people who are required to have a wet bag for each diaper change. So basically you need to have like 4-6 tiny wet bags each day.

Also I agree that bringing it to them so they can see it should help!

I wouldn't even ask before touring and instead bring some styles and a wetbag and ask in person so they can see exactly what you are talking about. Most daycares haven't seen modern cloth diapers so having one in front of them before broaching the topic can help. I suggest bringing a wetbag too so they can see you wouldn't be asking them to do anything different than a disposable and they would just throw it in the bag instead of the trash. When you say wetbag it makes them think of some complicated thing, which it isn't.

Also, consider researching your state's health regulations when it comes to hygeine in daycares. If they say their policy is no cloth that is one thing but if they say it is a state regulation, you can gently correct them if the state regs support you (not all states do if I remember correctly?).

Any advice on how to broach this topic with them? We took a tour of daycare a few weeks ago and the girl giving the tour told us "no cloth, they're unsanitary". She said the hybrids sound ok, but we'd have to run it by the director. So I'm going to meet with the head honcho. It's hard to say, too, if the girl who gave the tour was really in-the-know.

Saturday I'm going to the store for a short class on cloth diapering and I'm going to ask their opinion on how to talk to the daycare about it, plus I'm going to pick up a couple of options. Probably the all-in-one style and the hybrids with the snap-in liners and see how daycare feels about these two. Worst case scenario, she's in disposables during the day, though.

Any advice on this? Was your daycare open to cloth? I don't feel like it's very common here (the midwest), so it could be awhile before it's more widely accepted.
