@Mrs. High Heels: thank you! That was the exact clarification I was looking for. As a FTM, I'm finding all the information out there overwhelming. And yes, I meant that he sleeps 2-3 hours at a time. :)

@ladybee: You mean he sleeps 2-3 hours TOTAL at night? Or did you mean to say he wakes up every 2-3 hours at night?

I feel like 4 weeks is very different from 8 weeks (which is what the OP referenced), and at that age it is really really hard to keep them up. I wouldn't worry too much about trying to keep him up at 4 weeks. I remember just letting my son sleep when he wanted at that age. I got a little more focused about it after the 6 week mark though....

As he gets older, even a few weeks from now, it'll be easier to keep him up! You can try unswaddling, changing his clothes and/or diaper, tickling his feet or cheeks... those things usually helped me when I wanted to keep LO up. Even if he's only up for 5-10 minutes it's still helpful to break him of day/night confusion!

Have you seen this chart before? https://docs.google.com/document/d/11GHo4keUb2TVJUlSL1kD6HQcEgaNFBmzoQoOzcpcyas/edit?authkey=CPXE1bsO&hl=en_US&authkey=CPXE1bsO

I referenced it a lot the first year. At <2 months old, their max wake time is usually between 0.75-1 hr long.

I'm trying to help my son figure out his nights and days as well. He will be 4 weeks Monday. He sleeps 2-3 hours a night. Is very alert in the AM (8-11ish) and will take a few 2 hour naps in the afternoon. I'm curious @Mrs. High Heels, any suggestion for keeping him awake? I feel like when LO wants to go to sleep nothing I do can keep him up.

I would limit his daytime naps! Especially that long one in the afternoon... I would not let him sleep past 5 pm at that age.

Is she forcing awake time during the afternoon period? It isn't really clear how she is handling the afternoon sleepiness. I think she just needs to allow very short naps in the afternoon/evening to hopefully tire him out for the night time.

Posting for a friend not on HB:

My son will be 8 weeks (9 weeks gestation) on Monday and he seems to have his days and nights mixed up. I wake him at 7 am every day and open the curtains to expose him to daylight (I do this for all of his waking hours), but he continues to nap all day with his witching hour around 1 pm and his heaviest sleep between 1 and 6pm- if I let him, he would sleep that entire time!!! However, at night he will only sleep for an hour at a time For example, he will wake 2am, diaper change, feed, back to sleep by 2:45am,then I pump 15 min bc he won't breastfeeding efficiently, I go to bed at 3:15, then he is back up at 4am and we start all over again until 7am.

This has been going on for weeks now and I don't know what to do. I return to work part time in one week, but I'm still drowning in sleep deprivation.

Any suggestions?
