@BandDmommy: @Mamaof2: I would probably do some light snacks but I want to keep it super simple. Last year we did a full BBQ meal. I've been to plenty of birthday parties for kids with just cake and snacks.

We are going to do it at a park where there is a train ride so I'm not sure bagels or coffee would make sense? Even fruit is hard because it will be outdoors and it is hot & buggy here for a while.

Going along with @ Mamaof2.. Chickfila chicken biscuits are always a huge hit when I host play date which is around 10 am.

Also you don't need a meal but maybe coffee and bagels for the parents and some fresh fruit and donut holes for the kids

I would do morning. If the party was at 4 I would assume food such as pizza would be provided. I've never been to a party without food so I don't know the norm.

since the afternoon nap goes so late, i would do a morning party. For LO's second birthday, i started his party at 3pm because he usually was up by 2-2:30. As for saturday or sunday, i don;t think matters. I tend to pick saturdays though so you have a day of the weekend left after the party.

Thanks everyone for your advice! So, here's the deal.

My parents & brother will be in town Friday midday until Monday evening. Ideally, I want to do something with both sets of grandparents. BUT: I don't want my ILs to come for the same time period as my parents, because I want them both to have their own dedicated time with LO. They are fine with "sharing" but I'd rather not completely overlap. (My ILs have not planned their trip yet so I am thinking about when to suggest they come.)

So, I'm thinking either:

(1) Friday afternoon (4pm) after my parents get in, or
(2) Monday morning (10:30am), the day my parents leave

Sunday morning is out because of church. I guess we could do Sunday afternoon. I would like to keep the party on the first or last day of my family's trip so that my ILs can come, like, Tuesday - Friday for Option #1 or Sunday evening - Wednesday for Option #2. And there is only one day where we have both sets of parents in town.

Which is better? Again - who knows if we are going to even invite people. We very well may keep it just us. I kind of want to play it by ear as we get to know folks better here.

I'm feeling like Option #2 (Monday AM) is better to avoid the cake-for-dinner issue. The only thing is anyone we know that works couldn't come but right now that is only one family.

@illumina: I don't want to serve dinner! I want to keep it very simple this year with basically just cake. I think the earliest we could do in the afternoon is 4pm with LO's nap and getting up and going - but I also don't think it will be a long party so I feel like 4-5:30pm or so is still okay without serving dinner?

@PinkElephant: Bagels and fruit sounds nice! That's a good point about cupcakes for dinner... I just REALLY want to keep it simple and do just cake!

@Corduroy: @dolphin: @mrs.shinerbock: @T.H.O.U.: So many of you in the 10/10:30 category! Thanks for your input - glad to know it's common!

@ShootingStar: LO needs a solid 2 hours, and we are going to have it at a park rather than our house, I think, so I think 4pm is the earliest we could do since we have to factor getting her up and ready and to the park.

We did a weekday last year, but since most family and a lot of friends work Mon-Fri we are doing a Saturday afternoon 3-5pm. Can you cut LO's nap short and start a little earlier like 3.30? Or have it later like 4-6pm and serve dinner? If I were invited to an afternoon party and dinner wasn't being served I'd want to be getting home by 5-530 to make dinner.

We did Saturday 10 AM with bagels, fruit, and cake. Most of DD's friends have done 4 pm with pizza and cake. I personally felt like at either time it was nice to serve some kind of food before cake since either way you're runnkng into meal time at the end, and no one wants their LO having a cupcake for dinner :)

I would do 3:00. That way while LO is sleeping you can get everything ready, I assume with no meal there will still be some food and drinks? And then people can arrive and you can go get her up a little early. But then DS doesn't seem to be cranky when we wake up, just kind of out of it.

Do we have to do a Saturday or Sunday? What time? She naps 1-4 most days, so it's either like 10am or 5pm. We could shoot for an early nap and maybe swing 4pm. I feel like in the evening you run into dinner time but is 10am too early for cake?

Is it dumb to try to do a weekday afternoon - maybe Friday at like 4:30? We don't even know if we are going to do a real party or just family but if we do invite other families with kids, most of the moms SAH. But I know evenings are usually family time - and who eats cake before dinner?

By the way I am trying to avoid the weekend because of family schedules but maybe that's what we gotta do. Or maybe we do a week day but understand it's just family.
