There are great options if you head north, like Bethany Beach or Rehoboth, but realistically with the summer traffic you're likely to spend almost as long in the car as you would going to VA Beach. But both VA beach and the Delaware beaches are a shorter drive than OBX at least. I also grew up going to Emerald Isle every summer, it's so lovely and fun there!

@HabesBabe: you can find decently priced rentals at Broadkill beach -- it's so narrow that there are homes on VRBO that are beachfront with a boat ramp in back.
Rehoboth and Dewey would both have rental options on the Sound with boat ramps. Lewes too.

@HabesBabe: Oh yeah, unfortunately I don't know too much about fishing, so not sure if it's a good area. I know there's a really popular public fishing pier in Sandbridge, but if you're looking for a house with its own pier that might be harder.

@MrsSCB: Thanks! I found a few rentals in Sandbridge, but didn't know if the waters were good for fishing-- it looks like the sound side is more... twisty? than the OBX. If that makes any sense.

I'm from NoVa, and my family has always stayed in Corolla in the Outer Banks, which is closer than Emerald Isle. Nags Head and Duck are also nearby, all three are great.

You could also try Virginia Beach, which is much closer. Not the boardwalk area that is super crowded and all hotels, but there are some places with beachfront houses, like Sandbridge.

Hello DC/NoVa bees! The hubs & kids and I are flying out to NoVa to visit my dad for the summer, and we'll be spending a week at a beach rental. I know we're already a little late in the game for the search, but we're looking for something soundfront with a pier for fishing. We used to go to Emerald Isle, NC for YEARS as a kid, but the thought of making that drive with a 4 Y/O and 2 Y/O after a cross-country flight does not seem ideal.

I've looked at beach towns along Delmarva, but I don't know if any of those are good for crabbing/fishing? Any recs for closer OBX beach towns? Any driving tips to avoid traffic?
