Chances are, she knows it drives you crazy.

Kids need to know that you are going to confidently navigate their behavior when they do things like this (my LO does the same things).

She's testing you and the boundaries your setting. I've found that when I just simply say, "Ouch. I won't let you hit the animals." (or whatever that is), and don't put too much focus on it in the moment, she stops. It's when I overreact that she tries again and again.

We don't use timeouts, but when she's being aggressive with the animals, I separate them from her. I have to for their safety.

This article is a great reminder for me: http://www.janetlansbury.com/2012/02/what-your-toddler-thinks-of-discipline/

And here's an article that specifically addresses hitting: http://www.janetlansbury.com/2014/07/my-preschooler-is-hitting-me/ (we are dealing with this right now)

We don't use time outs much at all but physical aggression would be a time out or removal from that area or activity. I would also talk to her about why she did what she did and what she can do instead.

I'm the mean mommy that would tell her to go sit in a corner until she's ready to act like she's sorry. Hurting/hitting people and pets is automatic time out in our house.

My 5 year old DD has been acting out a bit lately. Like yesterday she pulled the cat's tail, hard, with both hands. Or the other days she hit her brother in the face. When trying to talk to her about why that's mean, why we don't do that, etc she just smirks and laughs and doesn't seem to take what we say seriously. This has been happening more and more, and honestly drives me crazy. How would you handle this?
